In the pictures, you cannot actually see physical signs of rotation, except for some of the roundness (although this is debatable whether it actually signifies rotation) and a small inflow band. It was definately rotating though! From my vantage point-(there's those words)-at UWS Nepean I could see what appeared to be a hailshaft. Sureley enough within five minutes I got two calls from friends saying that they had recived 5c-10c sized hail at Yellowrock-North of Glenbrook and Blaxland, and Castlereagh-western side of the Nepean. We just recieved a brief shower, which was freezing but over the mountains it looks very dark. While it didn't set a record for the state (and the site has too short a record for it to be meaningful), Ross (Tas) got down to -5.6. I was a little surprised that some of the other traditional cold sites like Fingal didn't get lower (Fingal was -3). Yunta (SA) got -3, the second-lowest April reading ever in SA (-3.5 was recorded at Mt. Crawford in 1981), and the lowest so early in the season. This is a fairly new site but shows a lot of promise for low minima; it seems to be recording consistently a couple of degrees lower than Yongala (which has the SA record at -8.2) under these conditions. I found that I had a greater range of photographs using an SLR camera, with a 50mm lense and a telephoto lense. thats my opinion. Andrew Wall SA/NT Co-ordinator for the ASWA.Inc. I am also in the market for a new Camera as my trusty old Pentax ME Super has worn out (the wind-on mechansism keeps jamming). I have been looking at Digital Cameras, but after studying all the form guides came to the conclusion that something offering the required quality & resolution was still around the 2 Grand mark (ref: PC Magazine April 99). More importantly, I could not find something really suitable for nightime lightning where a long time exposure is required. You basically have to keep snapping & hope you snap at the right moment, but on the plus side it's easy to get rid of the photos which are failures. I also couldn't find a Digital Camera which allowed multiple exposures, which is also useful for lightning. Certainly you can get a really good SLR and a really good scanner for much less than an equivalent digital camera, but this will change in time. Still, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has had success with a digital re capturing weather phenoma. However, I did find out that Toronto had hail on Wednesday along with many other places in the Lower to Mid Hunter. To what I could gather it was only pea size and only light. It is an interesting point - for some reason or another that the southeastern side of Lake Macquarie doen't receive much in the way of hail. It might have something to do with the Wataghan Mountians near by! To another interesting thing (even though I am not that surprised), the word has got out that there was some light snow at Polblue (approximately 1500m) on the Barrington Tops yesterday. So who said that the snow would not travel that far north? Tim Grugeon Morpeth (Maitland), NSW Jimmy Deguara wrote: > Tim, I have just heard that Morisett received hail as well. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com I looked up my records of this storm which occurred when I was living at Dulwich Hill, an inner southwestern Sydney suburb. The first storm on the 21st brought 42 mm of rain with a further 43mm late in the afternoon from the 2nd storm. There was intermittent hail up to the size of large marbles in the first storm but none in the second. The rainfall in the 2nd storm fell in 75 minutes (not remarkable but just for the record).Thunder and lightning preceded the first storm for about 3/4 of an hour before it struck at 8.30am. No doubt peak rainfall intensities were somewhat greater than indicated by the above figures. The second storm came in from the sea. I have no other record (or recollection) of this event. There was always more hail at Dulwich Hill from storms than I have observed generally at Seven Hills North. We lived about 300 metres from the Bankstown railway line which followed a geographical elevation and my father always said we lived on an 'ironstone ridge' which he reckoned the storms used to follow..but I would hesitate to say that with any conviction. Probably the best storm I remember is one that occurred in November 1961 (another remarkable wet month in coastal NSW).I remember the street being flooded and something of the order of 125mm in an hour one morning..in fact this happened at least twice within a week that month. There was a major site change in 1992, from the prison (which is on a hill and probably isn't a wonderfully exposed site anyway) to the airport. This has led to a MAJOR downward discontinuity in mean minimum temperatures, at a guess 2 degrees (I haven't analysed it in detail). The record April low at the prison was 1.4 (1978). In seven years of record the airport had recorded 0.0 three times, in 1992, 1994 and 1995. In the best parochial tradition, I gather that the local council has complained about their temperatures being too low! Blair Trewin Yes, this site change, from the jail to the aerodrome has raised the hackles of a few people in town. I have found that the minimum temp. registrations at the aerodrome are often 2 degrees lower than my own registrations taken in central Bendigo. The aerodrome site is in a very clear area, and is situated in a slight gully - hence a katabatic cold air slide into the region. I was looking at some pre 1957 records for the old central site, and the lowest temperature recorded here in April was -2.8 deg. on April 11, 1907. From the information that I have, the thermometers were exposed in a louvred screen at that particular time. Have a look at this URL....... www.kisser.net.au/kevans/tc_vance In there you will find images taken with a Digital Camera and a SLR. The images have been reduced in size or it would take ages to get it up on a web page :/ The Digital Camera is a Kodak DC120 which is about the middle of the range Digital Camera but there is now SLR Digital Cameras available which I hear are better still in quality. The DC120 cost me $1200, the prices for the SLR ones are about $2500 at that price you could get a Digital Video Camera and have a HOLE LOAD more fun :) Keith See what you think. ----- Original Message ----- From: Nick Sykes [nsykes at labyrinth.net.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Sent: Friday, 23 April 1999 1:47 Subject: aus-wx: Digital Cameras > Hi All > > I'm thinking of buying a camera and I'm strongly considering getting a > digital camera. > > I'll like a digital camera because you can get the pics on the web so fast, > which would be great for my web page. > > Is there anyone out there that has had experience with them and could tell > me if their any good at taking weather pics such as clouds and lightning. > > or > > Should I go for the SLR instead and get the prints developed and use a > scanner to put them on the web? > > Nick Sykes > > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ > To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com > with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your > message. > -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 019 X-Sender: disarm at braenet.com.au (Unverified) X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 3.0 (32) Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 23:10:26 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Matt Smith [disarm at braenet.com.au] Subject: aus-wx: Large wave and Storm surge warning (NSW) Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com IDW02N00 BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY NEW SOUTH WALES REGIONAL OFFICE 300 Elizabeth St. Sydney, Ph [02] 9296 1555; www.bom.gov.au WARNING OF UNUSUALLY LARGE WAVES Issued at 6:45pm on Friday the 23rd of April 1999 Wave heights of up to 5 metres are expected in the surf zone between Port Kembla and Smoky Cape from 6pm Friday 23 April to 6am Saturday 24 April.
