Hi Nick,

I've had very limited experience with digital cameras, however, I used a
Kodak DC50 for work purposes. The resolution of this particular model wasn't
terribly good, and the quality of the images just lacks generally (even at
it's best setting). Digital cameras are, as mentioned, still very expensive.
Perhaps, you might get a reasonable deal if you can find one second-hand.

I much prefer an SLR. Keith mentioned that an SLR will cost $2500. Well,
SLR's vary greatly in price. You'd get a pretty damn good SLR for $2500, but
you certainly don't need to spend this much. You can buy a brand new SLR
with lens for much less than a thousand dollars. Buying second-hand is
obviously another optiion. I bought my Pentax 35mm SLR second-hand, with a
28-135mm zoom lens, Pentax flash, and couple of filters for $275! And it's
worked an absolute treat since I bought it three years ago, and does
everything I need. It is still my only camera, and I use it regularly (and
it hasn't yet needed a service).

I can understand the convenience of being able to easily upload the images
to your computer, but if you want a hard copy, they'll never print as good
as a print from a negative (not yet anyway), especially enlargements.

Have fun deciding!

Cheers!

Marty.

I've just re-read Keith's message and misunderstood it the first time. I
understand now that Keith is talking about the SLR variety of the DIGITAL
CAMERA as being $2500, and not the standard SLR cameras.

Sorry!

Hi all

I thought I would provide proof that hail has been officially recorded over
9cm in diameter in Australia. (Even though we all know some people seem to
have forgotten hail sizes from recent storms which were in the double
figures)

This is from "An Exceptional Adelaide Hailstorm and the Associated Severe
Convective Outbreak: 22 and 23 January 1991", written by A. Watson,
J.Dickins and J.Pethick of the Adelaide BoM Regional Office. (Technical
Report 65)

>From the abstract: "A severe thunderstorm on the evening of 22 January 1991
produced hail of unprecedented size over metropolitan Adelaide. Hailstones
with diameters of 10 centimetres were measured. Damage in Adelaide was
estimated at $25 million, greater than for any previously documented event
in South Australia." (It goes on)

For interest's sake, 3 tornadoes occurred in SA that day, spawned from 8
confirmed severe thunderstorms. If anyone would like more info on these
events - tell me!

Hope this was of interest

Regards
James Chambers

Just checked out last nights minimum temp for Paralowie, well I was shocked
to see 4.1c at 6:45am on it, hmmm wonder what the city got last night, or
even yunta.

I do know now it is steadily rising and current temp here is 6.5c windspeed
(3 microamps) or converted terms about 1 knot.

Hi Everybody!

Well it does look like we get the best storms down here, well maybe once in
blue moon, but we get them. Gee I think I can remember that storm system,
not sure will need more info to help.

hmmm the cost of damage wasn't not much then again we didn't have Vt
commodores back then, and the cost of living in Adelaide is heaps cheaper
than sydney too....well so I hear

Tell ya what I would have been pissing myself if I saw those tornados,
wooooohooooo!!!!!! well from a safe distance anyway.

Is there any confirmed reports that they touched down????

Anyway if you have a full report or even just a few pages on the storm,
please let me know.
Hey I could put this info up on my web page on SA lightning as "The day
Adelaide got struck", kewl!

Are there any photo's of this storm??????
if so I would love to see some....:)

Well, as a local, I'm very interested! I'm especially wondering what I was
doing that day! I've got a horrible feeling I was on a holiday in
Melbourne!! (D'owp!!) This seems to be a habit of mine. I was in Sydney
on the Long weekend in January when a fantastic storm with roll cloud/shelf
cloud and boiling base disrupted the cricket telecast! I couldn't believe
it! I didn't get a storm in Sydney, but saw this monster on the TV coming
over the Adelaide Oval.....

Any chance you could include a few more details from that report?

Well Andrew, I walked outside at 7.15am, and there was a heavier ground
frost than there was the other 'record' night. It felt colder too. I was
amazed we broke the April record the other day, It didn't feel that cold to
me. As I've just moved I haven't even got a thermometer set up, but since
I'm only about a kilo from the bureau I guess we'll know soon enough
whether the record's gone again.

I heard that around 1976 Canberra had a white Christmas. Maybe Blair
or others can confirm.

hi Phil,

I found out my Thermometer was wrong, infact i think Paralowie had about
3.8c last night, but the BoM goes by what their thermo's say. My thermo's
were located too close to the brick house and were giving bad readings, I
have now corrected this and located them inside a home made stevenson
screen (well sort of one). and it's away from the house now :)

do you remember a storm that hit adelaide in Jan 1991, I know it's a long
time ago, but if you have any info, or even photo's, it would be nice to
see thanks....

Seeya for now,

BTW we need to set up a place to meet at, any ideas??????

Christmas in either 1969 or 1970 (I think) saw our family trying our first
'cold' Christmas dinner ever - and the year we chose found us sitting around
a 2 bar radiator - with snow on Tidbinbilla & the Brindabellas!!! Needless
to say, we never did that again!!

Hi all, especially the Adelaidians here!

A little bit more info as you wished...

This convection outbreak was quite an event - rare in terms of supercell
behaviour in Australia. Some time next week I hope to put some scanned
images from the report online so you can see what I mean.
One t'storm developed SSW of Wyalla at 3.50pm local time. 30 mins later it
split into two, both intensifying into respective supercells. The supercell
on the left (left-mover, cyclonically rotating) lasted another 2hours and
50mins moving in a general E direction, dropping large hail and a suspected
tornado. The supercell on the right (right-mover, anticyclonically
rotating) dropped giant hail and a tornado on its SE path. It is so
extremely rare for anticyclonically rotating supercells - even rarer for
them to produce a tornado and giant hail.
At 5.40pm local time a storm developed just east of Maitland. It soon
became supercellular and from 7.10pm hail of all sizes up to 10cm in
diameter hit Adelaide. The supercell, moving in a SE'ly direction moved out
of radar range at 10.20pm!! Certainly an extremely long lived supercell.

Sorry, but I'm running out of time - have an appointment. I got all this
info out of a technical report compiled by the Adelaide Regional Office. I
suggest that you go in and ask about the storm on this day...and maybe
they'll give you the report! :-)

Next week if you're interested, I tell you about more severe storm outbreaks
in SA. I remember one time there was a squall line that caused
uninterrupted severe damaged for over 250km!

Gotta go

I don't think that there is any argument that hail larger than 10 cm
would have been honestly measured in Australia by people...the point is
who does the measuring and what constitutes an 'official' measurement.
If you read the BoM severe weather summaries, you will note that a
Goldfields supercell (24/12/95), as an example, was reported as
dropping 11 cm hail. Reported by whom - presumably a spotter. The point
of our discussions....is this considered to be proof?. The answer seems
to be no, not unless a BoM person happened to be the one who took the
measurement. In that case, how could a report of a 10 cm hailstone by a
non BoM person in the Brisbane CBD, without any other evidence, be
considered offical? - kinda like John Howard's wife counting votes for
a federal election.

With regards to the technical report you quote, is there any mention of
the authors doing the measuring or were they spotter reports. If the
latter, then the measurement, although cited in a technical report, is
not necessarily proof in official eyes.

I personally think that photographic evidence with a ruler should be
proof enough for getting 'official' sizes...other than that take some
dry ice in an esky on a chase - it is apparent that the Sydney storm
dropped some hail a fair bit bigger than 9 cm diameter afterall.

Hi Guys,

This is some information sent to me from someone in Shellharbour about the
storm down there. Quite interesting in terms of the size of hail being
verified
yet again.

Adelaide broke its April record low for the second night in
succession, reaching 4.3. Also two more near misses on the SA state
record, with -3 at Yongala and Coonawarra.

Other notable obs included -5 at Ararat and numerous -3s in
northern Victoria at locations such as Rutherglen and Wangaratta.
I haven't checked for records yet. Tasmania was a little milder than
it has been with nothing below -3.

There was snow during April 1994, 1995 and 1996 on the Barrington Tops. There
was also 5 to 10 cm of snow on the Barrington Tops during the cold outbreak in
November 1996. I can remember taking a drive up to Barringtons Tops around the
22nd of November, 1996. There was enough snow to have snow fights and make
snowmen.

There was a snowfall also on the Barrington Tops on Boxing day 1993. I'm not to
sure, but I think snow also on that day snow fell in Oberon. Christmas day 1993
was the day when a large hailstorm struck the central coast.

Almost certainly 1968 (discussed in an earlier thread). Max was 15.8
on Christmas Day and 12.7 on Boxing Day. (1969 was in the mid 20s on
both days, and 1970 was 19 on Christmas Day, 24 on Boxing Day).

Blair,

In your opinion, do you think such cold temps could auger well for a
good winter, ie: some decent dumps and hopefully some good Cent.
Tabelands snow? Wishfull thinking i know...

I'm not in a position to check records easily today (will do on Monday).
There were major early-season cold outbreaks on April 11-12, 1994 and
April 7, 1995 - both had considerably lower maxima than have occurred
yet this year. I expect the 1994 event would have brought snow to the
Barrington Tops, but can't confirm at present.

At the other end of the scale, there was a major late-season fall on
November 22, 1996, with widespread falls above about 600 metres in the
Southern and Central Tablelands. I expect there have been later
instances than this, but will need to check.

I observed sleet in Aranda (a Canberra suburb) on December 18, 1991,
with an air temperature of 5 degrees.

And then there was mid-late November 1971, where snow started falling at
Omeo & turned into a blizzard in the high country - couple of feet of snow
fell during the afternoon if the memory of a 15 year old is accurate.

Hi Everyone,

While were on the subject of late season snowfalls i would like to tell you
about a time in November 1986 when I witnessed heavy snow fall near Jenolan
Caves. I was in Year 5 at the time on a school excursion and was amazed to
see snow start to fall around Blackheath. When the bus got to the Jenolan
Caves road the ground was covered in a thick blanket of snow. Blair or
anyone else could you be able to tell me more about this event as it is one
of my most memorable weather experiences. It was also the first time in my
life that I can remember seeing snow.

As a recent addition to this mailing list I just thought I should introduce
myself briefly.

I'm now into any weather I can get my hands on, but it all started with a
fascination with tornadoes years ago (the closest I've gone to seing one is
a wall cloud, but hey - I've read widely!!).

In my constant travels between Illawarra and the Southern Tablelands of NSW
I get to see it all from snow to heat waves and the odd supercell in
between, which is great!

Thanks to Michael T and Michael B for getting me on here.

Thanks Jimmy,

I am pretty certain that this hail occurred during the video I took.
Several people from work have reported hail from pea to golfball that day.

Michael

This is some information sent to me from someone in Shellharbour about the
storm down there. Quite interesting in terms of the size of hail being
verified
yet again.

Digital cameras are improving month by month, however you still have to pay
close to $1000 to get quality. Pics I have seen with Olympus digitals are
very good.

Conventional cameras still have far superior resolution, even the best
digital does not come close, but to an extent the resolution is wasted as
scanned pics are compressed as JPG's anyway. The other advantage is lens,
you cannot beat a 35-70mm or 35-105mm zoom for convenience, very few
digitals have interchangeable lens.

I still favour the SLR conventional, but when SLR digitals hit the market at
a reasonable price then I may reconsider.
