I wonder if it was referring to this squall line?? (I suspect it was an American publication also). >Snip Next week if you're interested, I tell you about more severe storm outbreaks in SA. I remember one time there was a squall line that caused uninterrupted severe damaged for over 250km! +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 002 X-Sender: paisley at mail.cobweb.com.au Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 07:56:40 +0930 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Phil Bagust [paisley at cobweb.com.au] Subject: Re: aus-wx: Australian Giant Hail...oopps Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com >Well, as a local, I'm very interested! I might have to drop into the bureau myself. November (can't recall the date) 1979 was the day of one of the most servere weather experiences I can remember. I was at high school at the time, but was home for the day (sickie??). Although I didn't recognise it at the time, that afternoon a supercell must have moved over Adelaide. The things I do remember were: A huge circular lowering (shelf cloud?) fringed in red dust, possibly with a roll cloud too. Huge gust of wind as the gust front came through. Under the center of the cloud, before the hail started, the clouds were deep green, incredibly turbulent and fast moving, and seemed very close to the ground. At this stage it was so dark, even under our patio, that I almost couldn't read a newspaper held at ams length. Then the CG's, lots o' hail, and the complete destruction of the aforementioned patio. I'm sure this storm dropped funnels somewhere. I seem to remember in the Barossa valley a large wine tank (weighing many tonnes) being picked up and depositied quite a ways away. Unfortunately, they're updated a fair bit later then when the observations come out though. This is where you can use the soundings...soundings are available at http://www-das.uwyo.edu/upperair/au.html 12Z soundings are not always available for all cities unfortunately. I think you'd be closest to Townsville (YBTL) http://metoc-u1.fnmoc.navy.mil/wxmap/web/index.html This is the NGP/AVN/MRF page - click on "Australia/NZ" and then choose what model you want to have a look at - they may not always be totally updated, so if that's the case, try a little later. http://grads.iges.org/pix/aus.fcst.html This is the another MRF model...it's actually better then the previous one (it gives you more options, and also includes a specific 700mb height) http://weather.unisys.com/ecmwf/restrict/ click on "AVN Model" it gives another AVN model, unfortunately the maps can be difficult to read, but they have some useful information other analysises/forecasts don't - such as the showalter index, and the 500-850mb RH mean. Ok...here come my favourite upper level sites!(They're updated every 6hrs too) http://www.arl.noaa.gov/ready-bin/arlplot1.pl?metdata=AVN+191+km Simply type in the lat/long OR WMO ID (YBTL should work to get Townsville) and how large you want the radius of the map to be. And then choose what fields you want to look at, you can look at virtually any level in the troposphere - SFC, 1000mb, 925mb, 850mb, 700mb, 500mb, 400mb, 300mb, 250mb, 200mb, 150mb, 100mb, 50mb and 20mb. You can choose a variety of different variables, the ones that are probably of most day-to-day use are the RH, temp, streamlines, wind speed, pressure vertical velocity (your VV's) and geopotential height. You can overlay two fields as well - this is useful so you can see both the streamlines and windspeeds at the same time...or you can choose the 500mb temp and the 700mb temp to see what your 500-700mb Delta-T is - there's a mulitude of uses at this site - it's great! There's even an archive of the analysises, it goes back 6 months - simply click on "archive meteorology" and choose the "FNL" model (it's the same as AVN) and choose what data set you want (choose one with "SH" - that stands for Southern Hemisphere) and then use it how you would normally use it. Remember to look at what field you're overlaying - if the field has "SFC" on it - it means it can only be used at the SFC height, if the field has "3D" on it, it means it cannot be used at the SFC, but only 1000mb and the other mb heights. If it has "SFC/3D" then it can be used for both the SFC and 3D (SFC = surface). If you click on "current meteorology" then you get a list of all the available models, however AVN 191 is the best + only one that has data for Australia (with the exception of MRF - the MRF model works like the AVN model, except it goes to a further date). Last but not least, we have: http://sgi62.wwb.noaa.gov:8080/cgi-bin/disp_avn.sh and http://wesley.wwb.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/disp_mrf.sh? Simply choose what dataset you want - and click on "show units/variables" for a short description of the different variables. There's too many to explain here (and I don't even know what they all do) but the LFTX (LI's) are probably the most useful and practical one you'll use. Make sure under "map projection" you choose Australia, you can also zoom in using the lat/long - but then have the map projection under "custom". There's also links to upper level data at: http://www.australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/links/ozcharts.htm I hope this helps Bill! Anthony Cornelius > "W.A. I wonder if > it was referring to this squall line?? Hi John and everyone The longest tornado path in Australia is thought to be one of ~282 km - from Goondiwindi (QLD) to Cobbedah (NSW). Intesting that these towns are in an approximate north-south line so it is a fairly unusual in that respect. This is comparable to the record 472 km track of an Illinois tornado which occurred in 1917. In these extreme cases it is thought that several rather than a single touchdown are responsible for a given tornado track. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? There are generally good sites in the Horsley Park area apart from the one already mentioned as Horsley Hill Jamieson Road has one good view W http://www.australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/photography/photos/1995/10 28jd18.jpg this is the view I got on the supercell chase 1995 as the squall line approached Michael Bath may have mentioned the Kemps Creek lookout on Horsley Drive just before you go down towards Kemps Creek good view to the S The Northern Road south of Penrith has several vantage points particularly around Luddenham mainly W-SW views. Box Hill N of Riverstone has some isolated hills and are worth exploring although I have not visited the area in 3 years I recall many years back a Boys Home in Box Hill for people with special needs had a fantastic view I think 360 degrees Kellyville also has some good W views on and also just off Windsor Road there is a new estate near Kellyville and I would imagine Hogans or Rogans Hill near Castle Hill across the road from Oakhill College has a western view A property (Church) carpark in Quakers Hill has some nice views to the SW to WNW I would say. This is located just off Farnham Road to get to the entrance and then into the upper carpark Anyway, I have given a few vantage points in general ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- Jimmy Deguara Vice President ASWA from Schofields, Sydney e-mail: jimmyd at ozemail.com.au homepage with Michael Bath http://www.australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 015 From: Dane Newman [dpn at bigpond.com] To: "'aussie-weather at world.std.com'" [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aus-wx: Another Cold morning For Victoria Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 13:53:04 +1000 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by penman.es.mq.edu.au id NAA23781 Frosts were again widespread across the state early with many inland centres again below zero. I am in the proccess of driving all around the hills area, searching for areas which look out over the st. Vincent gulf. Some I have found today are.. 1.> Wynn Vale Lookout or Lions park scenic lookout, located in the suburb of Wynn Vale. It has excellent views all round, except for a couple of buildings and trees to the NE. It has excellent views over the Adelaide CBD. One worth checking out.. It also has a clearing if you wish to set up your cameras etc.. Ample parking is available at the Salvation Army Church, right next door. The lookout is enclosed with a gazebo type structure (so if it does rain you wont get your feet wet), with a monument in the center (good for setting up small tripods on). 2.> One not far from the lookout is located on Swansea ct, located just off Wynn Vale Drive. I found this to be a very scenic observation point looking out to the West through a valley, good views from the SW all the way around to the North. This is an area where many new houses are going up, so I don't expect it to stay the way it is for long.. 3.> Another road just off Wynn Vale Drive is Greenridge ct, this is an excellent scenic area, I have not yet fully looked around this area, but it looks as though there is a small track which leads to the front of the hill, giving a excellent view fron the South through to the North. There is another road which goes the same way (grasslands ct), this prooved to be a miss leading name, it is not very good for observing. But it has a nice view of the other valley. These 3 are just some of the areas in Adelaide where you can set up a camera, I will post more as I find them, I think this will be a long ride... I might even put up a web page on it for the ASWA.Inc. regards Andrew Wall SA/NT coordinator for the ASWA.Inc.. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 019 Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 21:02:57 +1000 From: Keith Barnett [weather at ozemail.com.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: "aussie-weather at world.std.com" [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aus-wx: Weather summary for Seven Hills this week Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com See attached..weeklysummaries Summary of weather observations for Seven Hills--week ended Saturday 24th April, 1999 Observation Reading Date of extreme Average maximum 22.0 Average minimum 11.4 Average terrestrial minimum 6.9 Highest maximum 26.1 19 Lowest maximum 17.6 23 Highest minimum 12.5 18 Lowest minimum 9.4 22 Highest terrestrial minimum 8.7 23 Lowest terrestrial minimum 4.4 20 Total rainfall 1.8 Rain days 2 Highest daily rainfall 1.0 23 Total evaporation 29.6 Total wind run 1526.3 Highest wind run 479.0 23 Lowest barometer 1013.0 20 Highest barometer 1025.2 22 Thunder 0 Lightning 0 Hail 0 Frost 0 Fog 0 Byram Keetch drought index as at 23/4/1999 56.9 Last Updated on 25/04/99 By Keith Barnett +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
