Hey all from SA

We need to have a meeting in the very near future. (My hope within 2 weeks)
to discuss Membership into the ASWA Inc.

We need to decide on a place to have the meeting, and also a suitable time.
As there isn't very many off us a venue shouldn't be too hard to come up
with even if it is just a quiet cafe or something somewhere (maybe near
city for it to be centralized a bit) maybe even someones house if it is
suitable.

As for time I am available nearly everynight. After this first meeting we
will make a time that is good for everyone say for example the last Tuesday
of every month to have our meetings.

So ppl please let me know some suggestions and times available so I can
work something out by the end of the week.

Regards

Andrew

I suggest that until we all meet each other and everything gets formalised,
the Cafe idea is a good one. Rundle St East is the obvious idea, but The
Parade at Norwood might be a bit more accessable.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights are bad for me (Uni!...D'owp!)
although okay after about 7.45pm. Thursdays are good at anytime.

Alright!!

We got a severe storm warning here in the Illawarra (Wollongong). I believe
Jane Oneil has sent a copy. It's bright and sunny here at the moment but
there are some large Cumulus Congestus south of here, and who knows what's
beyond that yet. Apparently Ulladulla has already seen hail - and berri's
copping it now, that's a few hours down the coast from here.

Latest IR pic tells the story.

Storm cells have developed east of Sydney with some congestus closer to the
coast. It now appears that the forecast wind change has occurred, as
stratus or stratocumulus are developing and moving in from the SE, so the
view will not last long I suspect. I can see the large band of storm cells
to the far south, but this appears to be clearing further to the east.
Altocumulus is persisting over the SW suburbs and beyond.

I noticed on last nights satpics that storm cells occurred along the Mid
North Coast, perhaps near Kempsey and north. Any report Paul?

Michael, have you seen the BoM page yet this morning, there's a bit
happening with the front. It's looking good here (Wollongong) at the
moment, humidity is 97% and fresh cumulonimbus are developing ahead of the
front. It has hammered Ulladulla and Berri so far.

Keep you updated...

Andrew.

Unfortunately I missed them as I was in Newcastle with work BUT my reports
are there was plenty CG lightning with decent heavy rain for some period.
NO severity reported as yet BUT a welcome storm !! The storm had good
structure (I could see it from Newcastle) with decent effervescent boiling
and a nice "fluffy" anvil, not glaciated. Weather 21 showed the cell up
good on radar with some 20mm hr bits during the storm.

I think things are setting themselves up quite nicely for a
low-elevation snow event in Gippsland and the southern Monaro, maybe
down to 800m or so. Cooma was reporting 3 and Bombala and Gelantipy 4
at 0900. Keep an eye on the Gelantipy AWS - it's at ~600m.

Canberra could also get a very low max out of this if there's enough
cloud cover, although I wouldn't expect snow that far north.

An area of congestus in the Illawarra Tablelands has got its act together
(10:50am) and is now developing into a thunderstorm. From my vantage point
I guess that it is about 10km west of the Wollongong escarpment. Anvil
seems to be spreading towards the S-SW though it is edging towards the
east. It is not very high.

In Sydney altocumulus has rapidly developed and we now have some large
clouds with virga or light showers about.

I thought some of you might be interested in this...

I went to Perisher Valley (1710m) this last weekend (April 23 -
late, 24, 25 and 26 - early, 1999). Maintenance on our ski lodge
was the reason.

Trip from Sydney was interesting. Temp started at 16C at 18:10 last
Friday (23rd). By Mittagong, it was 7C with pockets of 2C. Around a
retreating Lake George, 7/8C, then quickly down to 2C 15km out of
Canberra. Around Canberra airport, 0C, then between -1C and 2C
along the Monaro Hwy. Just as you approach Cooma airport heading
toward Jindabyne, it was -3C then it warmed up to 1C at Berridale.
Jindabyne was 2C then as we ascended the Snowy Mountains, a normal
lapse rate down to -5C at Perisher Valley. Rather Brrrr! for April.

There was still some snow around from the 5cm or so that fell during
the night Wed/Thu 21/22 April. Beautiful weekend weather. Clear skies,
overnight freeze, cool days (+6C or so). Night of April 25 gave a
full 360 degrees ring around the moon that my 35mm lens could not
totally capture:-( Very impressive. When I left 3pm on Monday,
there were still some patches of snow in sheltered areas.

I think we will be pushing to get to 10 today. At 11.15 it is 7 and
quite windy and overcast. The cloud cover is middle level
cumuliform in character - slow moving and heavy in places.

Showers are falling mainly near the ranges with the precipitation
clearly visible as snow to lowish leves. Even some white
patches visible from Canberra on the some of the higher peaks.

In Canberra this morning the few light showers that have
fallen contained the odd sprinkling of small hail (around 1
-2mm). I would expect the eastern side of the Monaro could
get some decent snow (ie around Nimmatabel, Brown
Mountain).

Incidentally this morning's severe storm advice for the
Illawarra managed to get a 15 min discussion on prime
time ABC radio at 8.30 this morning. Amazing what a
billion dollar damage bill can do for media interest!!

Unfortunately the discussion seemed to go a little OTT
- with no distinction between an advice and warning.

Patrick

Cloud is breaking up - so the temp may start to rise. Going out now
to check out the hills around canberra. Could this be a taste of
things to come, or will it be yet another teaser to a dud season?

Time will tell...

Couple of items will lead to a review of the ultimate cost of the
Sydney 19990414 storm:

1) SES survey reported yesterday to commercial media (ninemsn)
"discovered many more homes that havn't been reported".
2) National Mapping (?) located at Bathurst. One of the chaps
couldn't come to Perisher Valley this last weekend was asked
to take aerial photos of the damage. Purpose: "Reassessment of
Total Damage Cost".

Aussie natural disaster damage rankings currently stand at:

1 - Newcastle Earthquake
2 - Cyclone Tracy
3 - Sydney Hailstorm

If 3 capps $1.1B (I think), then its ranking will move to 2.

Perisher Valley received about 10cm of snow and it's still snowing.

Temp at Perisher is just below -2C. At Jindabyne, it's +1C and
Cooma is +4C. That's at about 12:40.

The road between Jindabyne and Persisher was cut earlier today with
over 20cm of snow falling at Jindabyne. The snow ploughs are out and
about but the snow has largely melted off the road below Sawpit Creek.

This is the typical result of strong S/SE moving front. That's more
common early in the winter season. Later, cold fronts tend to come
more from the S/SW.

Jindabyne is a ski resort site rather than a Bureau one (there is no
Bureau site at Jindabyne, and as far as I know Perisher is manual).

Is this at Jindabyne town? If so this is very impressive - the town
is only at ~900m, and this would be as heavy a snowfall as I can
remember there at any time of year. (Jindabyne is in a marked
rainshadow from the west, and to a lesser extent from the east).

I've mentioned the June 1946 event (a classic of the genre) several
times in earlier threads.

Cooma seems to be holding around 4, as is Gelantipy. An extreme
frustration in such situations is the lack of visual observations
from the intermediate elevation ranges between about 600 and 1600
metres. I don't know for sure, but suspect strongly that the
forecasters make good use of sites like www.ski.com.au. (I'd also
be interested to know how much a web-cam costs to install and operate
- does anyone know this? - it would certainly be worth considering
installing in conjunction with automatic stations at places like
Hunters Hill (~900m, NE Victoria)).

A cell just moved over Pymble (northern Sydney at around 1:20pm). Not
much of a storm really but some small hail (to 1 cm max) fell and there
were a few CGs around. At 1:00pm it was looking like a fairly strong
storm but, with the way it looked around here, i thought that it wasn't
buying a disposable camera for. I suspect some more sizeable hail must
have fallen elsewhere in Sydney where things looked a bit more
organised. Certainly a lot of wind-shear based on cloud movement at
different levels

Still infrequent thunder around and still quite dark....and coldish.

Perisher - Our lodge ("Technology" - surveyed in 1995 as the highest
lodge in Australia by 2m! at >1800m) has a small weather station that
I am lobbying the club to get updated. I rang up for the reading at
12:35 as I knew there were people present. They told me that the
road had been cut between Jindabyne and Sawpit Creek because the
people that were supposed to collect the laundry couldn't get out
of Jindabyne. Snow ploughs are located above Wilson's Valley at the
Ranger station there and also at Perisher. Given this problem, Mal
decided to go to Jindabyne, following the snow ploughs down.

Jindabyne - Mal was in the process of taking massive loads of laundry
to a cleaner there in his 4WD following the snow plough. I contacted
him on his mobile for a real-time report. As with most climate-control
systems in today's motor cars, an outside temperature reading is given
that is reliable to within a degree or so depending on forward
motion.

Cooma - From the AWS.

Yes on all statements:-) With the added fact that in winter, 1998,
during the period last week in July and third week in August, Jindabyne
also recorded good snow. The best snow for Jindabyne comes from a S/SE
air-flow.

Ummm. I have a lot of contacts with regard to this sort of technology
operating in "remote and often extreme" places. A good, safe spot is
needed for the camera and computer with a decent comms connection
back to where it can archive images. This is why you'll find them
pointing out of some window e.g Blue Cow terminal, The Eagles Nest
(Mt. Crackenback) etc. Maintenance is a royal pain, largely because
the gear is cheap, purchased from Dick Smith or the like, running
DOS and/or Windows etc. that is rarely reliable from the staying-up
without operator help perspective. A proper video surveylance system
would be much more expensive in comparison.

I would also love to see more AWS's at different mountain spots as
you've mentioned. Power / comms would be a problem in many cases but
there are solutions to these for remote areas. Perhaps in the
interim there is scope for the BoM to share the cost of maintaining
a proper AWS with the Ski Resort / NPWS. At least that way, it has
a better chance of providing more reliable info year-round.

Hi all,

Well...the Brisbane AP has an FP (Frost Point) of -7C!!! And that is
EXTREMELY dry for Brisbane, we might be going for a record low temp
tonight if that doesn't rise significantly, or if the wind dies
down....we'll see - it's 25C, so it's relatively warm, and possibly too
warm to reach the 7.6C needed to equal the previous April record. It's
also a tad early - as when the air gets that dry, slight fluctuations
with the moisture content in the air can vary the FP/DP greatly.

Hey, All

Just got back from some more storm shots. Driving through Nth
Wahroonga and Nth St Ives (Northern Sydney) there was quite a bit of
hail on the ground, I drove through a little bit but would only say
that the average size I could see was about 1cm diameter. No damage
but still a site to see. Got some nice photos and some video footage
, will check them out and hopefully might have some interesting shots.
Seeme to be dying a bit now. But Im not complaining!!!

Greetings all after another long, work-enforced silence.

The Bureau's LAPS and meso-LAPS for the next couple of days look very
interesting and believable, given the cold airmass swinging NE across
SE Australia at present, with the rather wishy-washy low now in the
central Tasman intensifying and doing a loop close in to the Central
Coast..

Meso-LAPS analyses a very broad low at 00 UTC this morning with a
centre of 1006hPa out at 160 deg E, and level with Sydney. The 12 UTC
prog moves it southwest to 157E and deepens it to 1001, whilst the 00
UTC prog for tomorrow morning moves it northwest, to be about 150km
east of the Central Coast, central pressure 999. The pressure gradient
along the coast at this time is pretty impressive -- 1018 at Gabo
Island but 1004 along the Central Coast. The prog for 12 UTC tomorrow
has it at the same pressure and about 400km east of Port Macquarie.

The rain predictions from meso LAPS are for around 100mm along the
coast south of around Taree over the next 36 hours, and the wind
predictions for 00 UTC tomorrow range from 35 knots along the Central
and Illawarra coasts up to 50 knots offshore, with offshore wave
heights around 10m at the same time.

It'll be interesting to see today's GASP and US runs and the EC -- the
last ones I saw early this morning were generally in agreement but
lacked detail. Don't forget that GASP out to 72 hours is still
available for free from the Bureau Gopher.

The Bureau's latest Metropolitan Sydney forecast is:-----

>Issued at 3:59pm on Tuesday the 27th of April 1999
>For Tonight and Wednesday
>Sydney Metropolitan:
>Showers. Some heavy falls. Chance of a thunderstorm this evening with
>small hail. Fresh to strong SW to southerly winds tending to gales at
>times tomorrow.
>Headline : Showers. Squally winds
>
The district forecasts issued around 11.30am are still pretty benign,
so it'll be interesting to see what changes there are in the 4.30
issue.

Cheers

if it gets no warmer before 0900 tomorrow:

NSW

Cowra Airport	10 (previous record 13.0 - several times)
Orange (poss)	7 (previous record 7.2 - 1972)
Cooma (VC)	8 (previous record 8.6 - 1994)

I tend to agree with Laurier.

Leaving the dynamics and theory out of the picture, both MB and I agreed
that based on the weather conditions experienced yesterday that a low was
developing.

Yesterday, I observed castellanus of sorts and large cumulus increasing
with height northwards moving E but the develpment seemed to be extending
S. This morning, there some nice CB development off the coast to the E SE
and NE facing S. I thought that generally they were heading SE but It seems
the development and backbuilding moved these further away to the ENE.
However, the development this afternoon indicated development extending
from the S. The satpics also indicate a circulation starting to organise.

East coast low or cyclonic development of sorts off the coast. We will see.

I have just been watching an area of altostratus cloud which is moving NW
and so I believe it is part of the cloud band moving towards the coast. At
the back end to this is a cumulonimbus so that means the circulation has
already begun. Yes keep watch for some showers or rain overnight possibly
heavy along the coast.

Watch the news as there appaears to have been some large hail in some
areas. I don'y know what size.

Further to this report, Mal (who drove down to Jindabyne from Perisher
Valley with a load of washing) reported that claims by locals (who rang
up complaining that they couldn't get up to Perisher) of a 20cm snowfall
where probably exaggerated. True, that some drifts encountered were up to
and possibly more than 20cm, but the average fall was probably between 6
and 10cm. Still pretty spectacular by April Jindabyne snow archive records
I expect.

Direction of the snowstorm was from the W with a lower level contribution
from the S/SE starting about 4:00am in the morning.

This morning at 7.45am on my way to work I noticed what I thought was anvil
way to the south. Radio reports came in that hail had fallen at Ulladulla.
Have since seen footage and they had to get a grader to clear the Princes
Hwy. It was only small to thumbnail size, but very deep.

Have had very little rain at Shellharbour, to the SE was very ominous at
sunset, the low centre may be a little further south than expected. Wind is
surprising moderate at sunset, perhaps 15-20knots, and still with a SW
component.

Light rain has just started to fall here ( 6.45pm ). Like Jimmy and Michael
I too started thinking East coast low by 8.30 am this morning.

With cold air firmly settled over higher country west of Sydney (8pm
temperature at Mount Boyce was 2.5C, and Orange 2.8, both with SW/NW
winds of 10kt or so), and the radar now showing heavy showers moving
almost due north into Sydney, I think conditions will be borderline
for some snow on higher parts of the Central Tablelands overnight.

Wish I was home in Blackheath, rather than at Drummoyne, where there's
been steady moderate rain for about half an hour (it's now 8.45pm).
NOGAPS based on 00 UTC confirms the Aussie models in deepening the
Tasman low and looping it close to the central coast, and their wave
model is going for 24 foot swells onto the coast by later tomorrow.

It's going to be an interesting 24 hours or so!

G'day David, all

I thought I knew a lot about severe thunderstorm events in Qld but I didn't
know about this event. 282km is quite a track, and yeah, I do agree that
several 'touchdowns' occur instead of the one single tornado. When did this
event occur? I thought the Brisbane '73 tornado which travelled 51km at F2
(to possible F3) intensity was pretty long.

Regards
James Chambers, Brisbane

Hi James and everyone,

I haven't yet been able to get a hold of the original article (Evesson,
D.T. Tornado occurences in New South Wales. Australian Meteorological
Magazine, 17, 143-165, 1970); the record tornado itself occured on the
23rd of Feb 1891..anyone on the list remember it:)

While on the Brisbane tornado, you may have already seen this article
(Minor, J.E and Peterson, R.E. Characteristics of Australian tornadoes.
Preprints, 12th Conference on Local Severe Storms, Kansas City 208-288,
1982...phew); it is interesting that the American authors imply that
they would've given this tornado an F3 or even higher rating...the
difference reflects the Americans wind speed estimates being based on
damage patterns while here it is based on minimum windspeed
requirements for performing certain feats of strength.

Regards

David

Hi all

Should this only be for the Illawarra? Perhaps the Sydney Metro District
should be included?

NEW SOUTH WALES REGIONAL OFFICE
Issued at 2058 on Tuesday the 27th of April 1999

The advice affects people in the following weather district:

Illawarra

Very heavy rainfall leading to local flash flooding is expected within the
advice area for the next 6 hours.

The STATE EMERGENCY SERVICE advises that people should:
 * move indoors away from windows
 * take extreme care when driving
 * beware of fallen trees and power lines
 * keep away from creeks and drains as you may be swept away
