(My hope within 2 weeks) to discuss Membership into the ASWA Inc. We need to decide on a place to have the meeting, and also a suitable time. As there isn't very many off us a venue shouldn't be too hard to come up with even if it is just a quiet cafe or something somewhere (maybe near city for it to be centralized a bit) maybe even someones house if it is suitable. As for time I am available nearly everynight. After this first meeting we will make a time that is good for everyone say for example the last Tuesday of every month to have our meetings. So ppl please let me know some suggestions and times available so I can work something out by the end of the week. I suggest that until we all meet each other and everything gets formalised, the Cafe idea is a good one. Rundle St East is the obvious idea, but The Parade at Norwood might be a bit more accessable. >As for time I am available nearly everynight. We got a severe storm warning here in the Illawarra (Wollongong). I believe Jane Oneil has sent a copy. It's bright and sunny here at the moment but there are some large Cumulus Congestus south of here, and who knows what's beyond that yet. Apparently Ulladulla has already seen hail - and berri's copping it now, that's a few hours down the coast from here. It now appears that the forecast wind change has occurred, as stratus or stratocumulus are developing and moving in from the SE, so the view will not last long I suspect. I can see the large band of storm cells to the far south, but this appears to be clearing further to the east. Altocumulus is persisting over the SW suburbs and beyond. I went to Perisher Valley (1710m) this last weekend (April 23 - late, 24, 25 and 26 - early, 1999). Maintenance on our ski lodge was the reason. Trip from Sydney was interesting. Temp started at 16C at 18:10 last Friday (23rd). By Mittagong, it was 7C with pockets of 2C. Around a retreating Lake George, 7/8C, then quickly down to 2C 15km out of Canberra. Around Canberra airport, 0C, then between -1C and 2C along the Monaro Hwy. Just as you approach Cooma airport heading toward Jindabyne, it was -3C then it warmed up to 1C at Berridale. Jindabyne was 2C then as we ascended the Snowy Mountains, a normal lapse rate down to -5C at Perisher Valley. Rather Brrrr! for April. There was still some snow around from the 5cm or so that fell during the night Wed/Thu 21/22 April. Beautiful weekend weather. Clear skies, overnight freeze, cool days (+6C or so). Night of April 25 gave a full 360 degrees ring around the moon that my 35mm lens could not totally capture:-( Very impressive. When I left 3pm on Monday, there were still some patches of snow in sheltered areas. I think we will be pushing to get to 10 today. At 11.15 it is 7 and quite windy and overcast. The cloud cover is middle level cumuliform in character - slow moving and heavy in places. Showers are falling mainly near the ranges with the precipitation clearly visible as snow to lowish leves. Even some white patches visible from Canberra on the some of the higher peaks. In Canberra this morning the few light showers that have fallen contained the odd sprinkling of small hail (around 1 -2mm). I would expect the eastern side of the Monaro could get some decent snow (ie around Nimmatabel, Brown Mountain). Incidentally this morning's severe storm advice for the Illawarra managed to get a 15 min discussion on prime time ABC radio at 8.30 this morning. Amazing what a billion dollar damage bill can do for media interest!! Unfortunately the discussion seemed to go a little OTT - with no distinction between an advice and warning. Presumably Jindabyne is a ski resort site rather than a Bureau one (there is no Bureau site at Jindabyne, and as far as I know Perisher is manual). > The road between Jindabyne and Persisher was cut earlier today with > over 20cm of snow falling at Jindabyne. The snow ploughs are out and > about but the snow has largely melted off the road below Sawpit Creek. Is this at Jindabyne town? If so this is very impressive - the town is only at ~900m, and this would be as heavy a snowfall as I can remember there at any time of year. (Jindabyne is in a marked rainshadow from the west, and to a lesser extent from the east). > This is the typical result of strong S/SE moving front. That's more > common early in the winter season. Later, cold fronts tend to come > more from the S/SW. > > Michael Scollay mailto:michael.scollay at telstra.com.au I've mentioned the June 1946 event (a classic of the genre) several times in earlier threads. Cooma seems to be holding around 4, as is Gelantipy. An extreme frustration in such situations is the lack of visual observations from the intermediate elevation ranges between about 600 and 1600 metres. I don't know for sure, but suspect strongly that the forecasters make good use of sites like www.ski.com.au. (I'd also be interested to know how much a web-cam costs to install and operate - does anyone know this? - it would certainly be worth considering installing in conjunction with automatic stations at places like Hunters Hill (~900m, NE Victoria)). At 1:00pm it was looking like a fairly strong storm but, with the way it looked around here, i thought that it wasn't buying a disposable camera for. I suspect some more sizeable hail must have fallen elsewhere in Sydney where things looked a bit more organised. Certainly a lot of wind-shear based on cloud movement at different levels Still infrequent thunder around and still quite dark....and coldish. I rang up for the reading at 12:35 as I knew there were people present. They told me that the road had been cut between Jindabyne and Sawpit Creek because the people that were supposed to collect the laundry couldn't get out of Jindabyne. Snow ploughs are located above Wilson's Valley at the Ranger station there and also at Perisher. Given this problem, Mal decided to go to Jindabyne, following the snow ploughs down. Jindabyne - Mal was in the process of taking massive loads of laundry to a cleaner there in his 4WD following the snow plough. I contacted him on his mobile for a real-time report. As with most climate-control systems in today's motor cars, an outside temperature reading is given that is reliable to within a degree or so depending on forward motion. Yes on all statements:-) With the added fact that in winter, 1998, during the period last week in July and third week in August, Jindabyne also recorded good snow. The best snow for Jindabyne comes from a S/SE air-flow. > > This is the typical result of strong S/SE moving front. That's more > > common early in the winter season. Ummm. I have a lot of contacts with regard to this sort of technology operating in "remote and often extreme" places. A good, safe spot is needed for the camera and computer with a decent comms connection back to where it can archive images. This is why you'll find them pointing out of some window e.g Blue Cow terminal, The Eagles Nest (Mt. Crackenback) etc. Maintenance is a royal pain, largely because the gear is cheap, purchased from Dick Smith or the like, running DOS and/or Windows etc. that is rarely reliable from the staying-up without operator help perspective. A proper video surveylance system would be much more expensive in comparison. I would also love to see more AWS's at different mountain spots as you've mentioned. Power / comms would be a problem in many cases but there are solutions to these for remote areas. Perhaps in the interim there is scope for the BoM to share the cost of maintaining a proper AWS with the Ski Resort / NPWS. At least that way, it has a better chance of providing more reliable info year-round. And that is EXTREMELY dry for Brisbane, we might be going for a record low temp tonight if that doesn't rise significantly, or if the wind dies down....we'll see - it's 25C, so it's relatively warm, and possibly too warm to reach the 7.6C needed to equal the previous April record. It's also a tad early - as when the air gets that dry, slight fluctuations with the moisture content in the air can vary the FP/DP greatly. The Bureau's LAPS and meso-LAPS for the next couple of days look very interesting and believable, given the cold airmass swinging NE across SE Australia at present, with the rather wishy-washy low now in the central Tasman intensifying and doing a loop close in to the Central Coast.. Meso-LAPS analyses a very broad low at 00 UTC this morning with a centre of 1006hPa out at 160 deg E, and level with Sydney. The 12 UTC prog moves it southwest to 157E and deepens it to 1001, whilst the 00 UTC prog for tomorrow morning moves it northwest, to be about 150km east of the Central Coast, central pressure 999. The pressure gradient along the coast at this time is pretty impressive -- 1018 at Gabo Island but 1004 along the Central Coast. The prog for 12 UTC tomorrow has it at the same pressure and about 400km east of Port Macquarie. The rain predictions from meso LAPS are for around 100mm along the coast south of around Taree over the next 36 hours, and the wind predictions for 00 UTC tomorrow range from 35 knots along the Central and Illawarra coasts up to 50 knots offshore, with offshore wave heights around 10m at the same time. It'll be interesting to see today's GASP and US runs and the EC -- the last ones I saw early this morning were generally in agreement but lacked detail. Don't forget that GASP out to 72 hours is still available for free from the Bureau Gopher. The Bureau's latest Metropolitan Sydney forecast is:----- >Issued at 3:59pm on Tuesday the 27th of April 1999 >For Tonight and Wednesday >Sydney Metropolitan: >Showers. Some heavy falls. Chance of a thunderstorm this evening with >small hail. Fresh to strong SW to southerly winds tending to gales at >times tomorrow. >Headline : Showers. Squally winds > The district forecasts issued around 11.30am are still pretty benign, so it'll be interesting to see what changes there are in the 4.30 issue. Tornado occurences in New South Wales. Australian Meteorological Magazine, 17, 143-165, 1970); the record tornado itself occured on the 23rd of Feb 1891..anyone on the list remember it:) While on the Brisbane tornado, you may have already seen this article (Minor, J.E and Peterson, R.E. Characteristics of Australian tornadoes. Preprints, 12th Conference on Local Severe Storms, Kansas City 208-288, 1982...phew); it is interesting that the American authors imply that they would've given this tornado an F3 or even higher rating...the difference reflects the Americans wind speed estimates being based on damage patterns while here it is based on minimum windspeed requirements for performing certain feats of strength.
