Amberley recorded 4C according to the news. So being 26km west of the city I would normally have expected to be somewhere between 7C and 4C. Funny thing is, it didn't seem that cold this morning at Mt. Crosby and in fact my min was 11.0C, which is 2C warmer than the 9.0C I recorded last Friday (23rd)! Difference is that last Friday it was dead calm overnight, whereas last night was considerably windy. Forecast for tonight is Amberley again 5C and Brisbane 9C. Currently at 12:00 midnight it is 15C here and it just isn't going to get there and yes, there is still a good westerly happening. Hmmmm. I want all the various places that all those storm ethusiasts visit to watch a thunderstorm. I have recieved around 15 emails with about 30-40 places. They are widespread to say the least. I have a few from Brisbane, a few from Canberra/ACT, a few from Vic and a few from Sydney, but the most sites the most detailed descriptions comes from Adelaide. have about 10 sites from Adelaide/SA. Everyone else lift your game.-(My best impression on being a motivator is coming up) -I want them coming thick and fast. I want location, views, pro's and con's, any thing which you deem it necessary to tell me. I am looking for this to be completed by July/August--becasue I have 7 weeks off. It will probably be in A5 format--perfect size for travelling and (drumroll please.....) there will be a website However all of the above is damn useless unless all people email me with their sites. That can email the list with Subject title-- ASWA Vantage point database --or you can email me at dann_w at hotmail.com It doesn't matter. What does matter is that we all give our little bit so a big and truly useful tool can be made. Once again--GET those emails in. Have a nice day!! It seems that someone in the office decided that this might not be a very good idea, given the fact that a certain well-known person by that name does ads for WA tourism, and changed it to Elaine before the start of the season. Probably as well, given the damage that Elaine ended up causing. (In Clement Wragge's day, he named cyclones after people - especially politicians with which he was in disagreement - on purpose, but I don't think you could get away with that now, much as I'd like to be able to name a particularly destructive storm after Stan Zemanek after his performance post-Sydney hailstorm, which got a well-deserved roasting on 'Media Watch' last week). Doncaster Shoppingtown Carpark, Doncaster - Melway map 33 D12 - has views in all directions except ESE. The main advantage of it is that it's close to the Eastern Freeway which takes you west towards the city or out towards the eastern suburbs and nearby ranges. Its main disadvantage is that at night the lights make the lightning less vivid and not as effective photogenically. Is the best place in Melbourne I know of to watch the NE ranges storms from. 2. Leakes Rd & Dohertys Rd, Werribee - Melway map 203 - is great for a vantage point due to the fact that it's flat with no trees. You can see in all directions and the fact it is situated near two main freeways - one heads to Geelong, the other to Ballarat - makes it ideal from that point of view. The main disadvantage of these and other roads in the area is that they are dirt roads and are not really accessible to conventional vehicles after a lot of rain. It is best when the storms are coming in from the west, but can be good for others. 3. Melbourne Airport observational carpark, Tullamarine - map 4 J7 - is good for seeing in most directions. It is close to the freeways that head towards Bendigo and Woodend. It is difficult to get to if you don't know where it is however and also trees can get in the way. It's best to go here for storms that are towards the north west. 4. Mt Ridley Rd, Craigieburn - map 243 C1 - is one I stumbled onto by accident a few years ago. It is just off the Hume highway and has a great view of the city. It is also good to check on the storms to the north. It's disadvantage is the time it takes to get anywhere apart from north. Generally the plains north of the divide are great for chasing with a superb road network and nice flat land which means any hills even if only 100m high are extremely useful. There is a turnoff of the Northern Highway north of Heathcote that leads along the eastern side of a small range and gives you a superb view across towards the NE ranges and Shepparton. The turnoff will have a sign saying Colbinabbin and Elmore (map 407 - H/J 4). I used to work up that way and I saw storms from this road that were in NSW and could see storms over the ranges easily. These are ones I can think of for now - the Mt Dandenong ones have already been mentioned by Jane O'Neill I think. Don White--- I am at werrington downs which is north of penrith, north of kingswood. The 87mm was between before 7am (i checked it before i went to uni) and about 5pm (when I got home from my second class). But I would say that most of probably came from the falls between 12-5pm becasue at uni(--werrington south UWS 10kms away--) we had sunshine all morning although there was a cell which was dark over my house as I was driving back after 12 but I don't think anything significant. I was almost skeptical about the fall. I though I had maybe not tipped out the previous days fill. But I am certain I did when I checked the Mondays. In adding to this extraordinary fall--we did get a hell of a lot of rain. Enough to have flooding thru the garage-which has never happened before. And for excess storm water flowing out of the drains. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, If some of the Brisbanites have been looking at the models, they might have noticed that this Saturday could potentially be interesting, as in heavy thundery shower wise...there is a *VERY* strong upper level trough/low + cold pool of air. Most likely, it'll result in heavy coastal showers - however everything is subject to moisture. At the moment, the models do have a fair amount of moisture coming in, but possibly not as much as I would hope for (if I were greedy!) What does this have to do with the ASWA meeting? Never fear! If anything interesting happens, there is an internet connection at the office (with 4 computers connected I believe?) We *can* hurry along the ASWA meeting if something very exciting happens, or alternatively, we can have breaks to all go outside. Remember, wx first! Lets just hope the models are correct, they've been tipping this for almost a week now, and currently the models are still looking 'sweet.' Some showers in NE NSW were nice to see...as it means there's at least some moisture there. There might also be some stuff around on Friday night for us, certainly to the south there will be. Now - 5 months ago, we were getting excited seeing -8 LI's forecasted about 100km W of us...now, we're getting excited seeing -2 LI's to our S, and -20 VV's, in the hope of heavy thundery showers...
