So far we've had 60.5mm of rain over the past 4-5days, this is about 2/3 of May's average. Currently, there's some moderate rain - I'm not sure what radar is looking like, because the BoM site went down before (for the 7:30-9:30am maintanence) I'm just about to goto uni, we should still get some fairly heavy falls (even though the rain is rapdically clearing from the N according to sat pics) however I'd say eastern suburbs would get the most. And Ben will probably get three times as much as me, because he just always gets so much more - it's not fair! :( Anthony from Brisbane +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 006 From: Michael_Bath at amp.com.au X-Lotus-Fromdomain: AMP at NET To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 08:30:00 +1000 Subject: aus-wx: weather photo and video night Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Greater Sydney people, I'm organising a weather and video afternoon/evening at my place this Saturday 15th. Blue sky to my west, and just high cloud over me and to my east trying so hard to be DRIZZLE.. The BOM have just updated their forecast to showers, with the chance of an afternoon Thunderstorm for Brisbane.. Don't like our chances much of a Thunderstorm, but we'll see.. i didn't catch the Gold Coast forecast as the BOM server is down for a few hours this morning and i heard the forecast on an AM station but i'd still expect rain for the Gold Coast, at least thismorning.. Thats for sure.. I think there is no doubt that SW inland WA, including the Goldfields area, would rank as one of the top supercell (and presumably tornado) environments in the country...I have noticed that this area, the past season at least, seemed to be more often under a favourable upper level wind environment than the eastern states...dunno if this is a feature of the area or just season-season variation. As for the eastern states I am also one of those who would prefer to go a way inland for big storms: from the tablelands, slopes and plains of NSW down to Victoria. If you look at the NSW severe storm database, these inland areas have a higher incidence of severe storms / tornadoes than the areas closer to the coast. Although covering a larger area, these districts are much less densely settled. The database is only that but I think events over recent seasons affirms that these areas will make one heck of a chase zone...if ASWA can get funding for some more roads: btw does anyone know if there is any truth to the rumour that there are signposts on the Hwys in the NSW central/northwest slopes/plains areas warning drivers of dangerous storms / severe weather during the spring summer period?? _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I meant it only just as a little bit of good natured ribbing, but it seems to have gotton rather out if hand... I am of course, more than familiar with SW WA phenomena and when I have some time I will write you some detail from my 13 years obs which are from Jan '64 to Dec '76. I can probably add one to your list of tornadic events, although this one was truely only a waterspout, observed touching down just North of Sugarloaf Rock in May '75 and not associated with a severe storm as such (weak cold front/squally sort of weather). I tracked it as a distinct suspended funnel for some 20 mins as it progressed East, finally withdrawing fully into the parent Cu over Busselton. This was my first funnel!!! (And damn, damn, no camera) Ira, along with many other ASWA members, I regard your contribution to this list as very valuable. As a matter of fact, I really look forward to meeting you and having some serious dialog re WA phenomena. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com My memories of Melbourne were bleak and grey. I have no memories of any severe storms in Melbourne (was only 7 when I left) but as soon as we moved up to Canberra we had half our roof ripped off an a huge storm, and there have been a number of roof-ripper storms since (This is going back 20 years though :). All in all, though, Canberra is pretty safe. Most of the lightning we get seems to hit around the mountains or stay air-to-air - no where near as many ground strikes as, say, Syndey. I can only think of one tornado - back in '96 way down south in Tharwa. Canberra weather is far more extreme than Melbourne though - from -9C in winter to 42C in summer (I think they're the record extremes - Blair?) but usually -6/-7 on a good winter morning to 38 on a good summer day. Foggy in April/May, icy in June/july (watch that black ice!) windy in August/Sept then dry with lots of bushfires in the summer. We get the odd hailstorm in the storm season (November-March) but I've never yet seen any hail damage. Mostly our storms are purely ornamental :) HTH, Chris At 11:21 11/05/99 , you wrote: >Hi..
