It has been raining on and off all day and boy did the gardens need it. Hopefully we will get the totals by tomorrow, and hopefully we will get a little more. At 1:20pm while driving home from work I experienced light drizzle and fog which covered most of the northern suburbs near Parafield Airport. This was very hazardous as the roads were very slippery and there are many road works in the area. This drizzle didnt last long but it cleaned the car of mud :) Further on into the day the rain got a little heavier turning into a light shower, which lasted well onto this email. I received a report of very heavy rain in the South of Adelaide near McLaren Vale and Victor Harbour, which is good for them, but we didnt see any of it as the rain band moved off to the east and we near Parafield only received the top end of this band. Oh well hope all get some good rains and or storms see you later..... Andrew Wall (08) 82854590 S.A. / N.T. Co-ordinator. S.A. Lightning Page - http://lightning.virtualave.net ASWA Inc. Very windy, can't give you an exact wind reading but the gusts are very strong. Dunno, gusts might be 80 k's or more. It's definately stronger than "Fresh". Feels a lot colder than 8 because of the wind. I did work experience at the Brisbane BoM, and I assumed that all BoM offices (especially Melbourne's) would have work experience available - however, I do know that there are restricted times. If you're keen, why don't you opt to do it in your holidays? The time I wanted to do work experience with the BoM (with school) was not available, so I asked if I could do it in my holidays - and that was fine with my school, and again - I'd say any school would most probably allow this. Secondly goto the BoM and see if they have any spare, *(ANYONE KNOW IF THE BoM DO KEEP OLD ITEMS SUCH AS ANEMOMETERS)*, Third one is a bit harder making it out of an old taperecorder motor, micro/milli amp meter etc..(THIS IS THE ONE I AM MAKING NOW) and the forth option is to live my life with out wind generated measurement devices. Okay now here is the good bit where I ask all of you on your opinions, Is a home made Anemometer going to give me the same results as a $200 option from the shop??? If not any ideas how I could make it better? What about commercial Anemometers??? they are expensive, is there a cheaper option?? You could always stick your completed device out of a (moving) car window to calibrate it... or a Formula 1 for tornado speeds (: . it would give you a fairly good indication of wind speed. Electric motors' output increase with rotation fairly linearly. I suspect the BoM and others use a optical interrupter attached to a digital device with LCD readouts these days but a motor should be OK for the purpose. It might give you +-10% if your'e lucky.... surely adequate! You must try and keep the mass of the whole caboodle down to measure gusts else your anemometer won't accellerate fast enough to measure transients (gusts) in windspeed with reasonable accuracy. Make sure that there isn't an internal regulator on your casette motor else you won't get any voltage out at all!!! Try and get a 270 degree analogue meter (does Oz have someone like John Bull or similar surplus electronic dealer.... not your local Tandy) rather than a digital one for your readout as you can change the scales quite easily on an old analogue meter else you'll have to do some mental arithmetic looking at the voltage on a DVM to convert it into knots / mph etc. > > If not any ideas how I could make it better? Use an optical interrupter device and feed the pulses in through the serial port of your PC - get some computer whiz to sample the pulse rate with software and create the neccesary lookuptable for ultimately displaying to your monitor.... once the raw data has been collected in this way the sky's the limit! The wind is a very cold WSW. There are now cold air Cb's evident on the western and southern horizons, the radar is showing Cbs with some yellow (10-20) at the southern end of the bay. The sat pic shows that the best of the cold air is still to the south, and should move over us, therefore the next 6 hours should be very interesting. The wind has shifted to the SW at the southern end of the bay and temps there are near 5 or 6. I had 12.2mm to 9am, a nice fall, and the best for ages. Well I'm heading out for another look as the radar shows a cell approaching my place. The models haven't handled this at all well - the seriously cold air wasn't expected to penetrate north of Tasmania, but it has. The thicknesses seem to have hit about 530 on the latest LAPS analysis (OO Z - 1000 EST).. We've had two major bands of showers through in the last couple of hours, both with some hail. According to a friend at about 400m at Ferny Creek (Dandenongs) they are experiencing hail bordering on snow. There are radio reports of snow at Olinda (550m). Melbourne is currently at 7.6 C. Not sure what the max is so far today, although the archived METARS suggest the Melbourne airport max is around 9. I think, but am not sure (and the database is down so I can't check), that the last sub-10 max in May was in 1977. The heaviest rainfalls have been in the far south of Victoria - 58mm at Weeaproinah and 53mm at Wilsons Promontory. The most recent LAPS run does push the cold air through further northwards, suggesting Canberra will be pretty cold later on today and tomorrow. Excellent! About 10 mins ago it was dark and drizzly (as it had been all day). Sun just broke through suddenly and there's blue sky abounding. Hang on - I spoke too soon... here comes the rain again :) Weird day - but still not very cold for a May day. I'm at my parents place in Taralga on the southern tablelands in NSW for the weekend (it's on the BoM's district boundarys map) , and I'm being reminded of why I love to come here so often. I think the cold front has just gone through, it's 9.3C and falling, it's showery - no sleet yet, and I'm begining to feel that despite the forecasts, I'll be disapointed if I don't see some snow before morning! The 1PM (EST) chart does look drastically different from what you would expect from the one that was issued at 4AM this morning, so maybe I have hope yet, providing that high behind the front doesn't but in too quick. My thermometer only made it to 10.3 at 2 pm. It was 6.9 at 11.30 am. Wind swung from SW to southerly at 10 am with some strong gusts. Urban area rainfall from 6 pm Fri to 4 pm Sat totalled 16.4 mm. BoM rainfall at Mt Duneed AWS (Geelong AP) is at present way out of calibration or something with only 0.4 mm registered on the web page despite all close surrounding places having at least 15 mm.
