Caught the last few seconds of a news story on Friday saying that a recent skeleton find at Lake Mungo may be 60,000 years old, and that Australia was possibly colonised by two distinct races. Certainly some earlier TV shows I have seen of the ancient inhabitants around western Victoria suggested a different race, one that was less nomadic and whose settlements were based on a series of eel traps. Imagine how different the climate was 60,000 years ago. Michael > Actually, I think the Glass House Mountains are the most recently active > volcanoes in Australia. The Illawarra coastal plain is only 2-10km wide before a steep ( cliff face at times ) escarpment that is 400m in the north but 700m high in the southern end. Convection rarely occurs over the coastal plain, the Sydney Hailstorm being a notable exception. I have always maintained that the sea breeze inversion is culprit number 1. Our sea breezes can blow up to 30 knots but are surprisingly shallow. Often at Moss Vale only 20kms back west from the escarpment it is 5C warmer even though it is 600m higher. Another thing about sea breezes that is slightly off topic is not only are they shallow in vertical, but area as well, I once went on a all day fishing expedition that went off the continental shelf about 20-30kms out to sea, if fact you could only see the peaks of some mountains left on the west horizon. It was calm and balmy most of the day, just light flutters. On returning I noticed how the wind gradually picked up the closer we got to shore, by the time we got back it was a typical 15 knot NE sea breeze. I asked how long had it blowing and was told " all day ". Yeah Ben, i said they were Dormant too.. i actually think they are extinct :) I read that they have been inactive for millions of years in a travel brochure, wouldn't be surprised if it was wrong.. Things look like they might be interesting for NSW in the next few days hey? The models have really latched onto this next system coming across, UNISYS AVN yesterday looked like a warzone for the southern states! Keeping in mind that the models are all over the place at this time of year, and have already changed a few aspects of the situation considerably, i think NSW and VIC is the place to be over the next 48-60 hours.. The whole system looks like it will slip south of us.. i'm not too worried as we've had a pretty good run up here the last few weeks.. Weather in Brisbane, pretty dull.. only a few mm's from periods of light rain/drizzle overnight and early this morning.. Please note that if you have posted a report/URL to the list, this has already been recorded. I understand that sometimes evens can happen late in the month, and people are trying to get reports ready, so there will be a 5 day le-way for this (June 5th) anything after this, will be included in the next issue of Storm News. I understand Jason or Keith you were going to do a report on TC Vance? If you could email this to me, it would be great. I also don't have any reports from Perth (latest severe t'storm) - it only needs to be brief. After this issue of Storm News, the timing will change slightly, instead of an issue covering an entire season (eg Autumn, March + April + May) the cutoffs will change, to 10 days before the end of the season, for example, Feb 18-28 + March + April + May 1-21. This way, Storm News will generally be out much more punctually. State Reps - I'm still waiting on a list of addresses of all the financial members in your state, I need to know how many issues of Storm News will need to be printed + sent out, so I can budget with Michael Scollay. I have seen a volcanic hotspot map and it still has this area as a dormant hotspot. Causes Local Gales in Brisbane Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, Well...we had gales here in Belmont earlier today, lasted about 10mins, with gusts up to 33-35kn! During that, a largish branch (5feet long) snapped off a neighbours tree. While walking my dog this evening, I noticed quite a few small branches + twigs down, as well as one medium sized tree (6-7m high) blown over, with large branches (also around 5-6 feet) broken off nearby trees as well. After this little burst, things settled down around 15-20kn for around 20mins, then was fairly calm. The "tropical depression" is now 990hPa, and causing 55kn gusts, it's kicking up 5m waves (good enough for you Mr T?) on the beaches causing some fairly severe beach erosion, and minor local flooding of beach dwellings. Certainly seems to me that it could/should be classified as a Cat 1 TC, even if it is hybrid.
