I attended the AMOS meeting last night to hear a talk by a BOM forecaster regrading storms, in specific Severe Weather/ Supercells. I would like Jimmy and Michael for giving us the opportunity to attend this for it was a thoroughly fascinating talk. It was good to see how they interpreted similar data to what us 'watchers' do. We also got to look at some really high resolution radar loops of the storms that impressed me no end. I think that if the opportunity arises for other state group to attend such meetings, these should be strongly recommended. It would be great to actually get some BOM forecasters at some ASWA meeting for i'm sure their thoughts and input would make for some great discussion. Thanks Daniel. You seem to be way ahead of your time:-) The above timestamp put in by your mailer or hotmail translates to Fri 28/05/1999 00:31 This places it right on the bottom of my list. EST stands for North American time zone when sending from Hotmail rather than the intended Aussie one. I've found with these sorts of free accounts where it is possible to "adjust" your timezone in the WWW interface, that this introduces a time warp. It is best just to leave the timezone selection at the default for the server or GMT. That way, it gets corrected properly by mailers in Oz by GMT +10. It works like this; 1) Hotmail server is set to PDT (GMT -7 = 16:31 on 26/5) 2) You adjust WWW mail interface to read 09:31 EST. The "09:31" display comes from the GMT time (23:31) +10hrs. "EST" comes from the WWW interface to mean EST in North America which is GMT (23:31) -5hrs. 3) Net offset "warps" time by +15 hrs (-5 + 10). 4) Hotmail server ignores WWW "local" time stamp but not offset. After all it has it's own clock and just needs to know the offset. This is part of the bug. The other part concerns the fact that the WWW server uses GMT as it's base display time, so the user adjusts from this rather than the PDT local time. Double bug. 5) Mail is sent with the WWW server timestamp of 16:31 PDT +WWW inferface offset of +15hrs. 6) PDT time is corrected by reader leaving mail with +15hr timewarp. I put a detailed bug report into Netscape Netcentre about this. They know about it and they don't have a fix because it would require a local clock to run for each instance of a mail invocation. Thanks. There is another aspect to this which I have overlooked - again in the area of degree. Guesstimating MSL pressure range here (not extremes) at 1015 to 990 equates to 25cm change in sea level. In areas with a tidal range of 2 metres, this difference could be significant. Our tidal range is over 6 meters (a real pain when fishing or boating), hence the significance (in terms of surge effects) not as great. Widespread falls of 50mm+ have occurred in two regions; the far south-west corner and an extensive area around and inland from Geraldton. Geraldton itself has had 74mm yesterday and 76mm today, breaking its May record twice on successive days. Highest rainfall to 0900 today was 145mm at Kalbarri, easily a daily record for any month (previously 89mm), although this is a relatively short record (26 years). In the far south-west, Cape Naturaliste got 84mm, which is also a May record (88 years of record) and the fourth-highest daily fall for any month (highest 92.5mm). Judging by the warnings, the forecast and the synoptic situation, we haven't heard the last of this yet. There don't appear to be any flood warnings out yet, but the WA Main Roads web site suggests quite a bit of nuisance flooding with road closures. Can the WA people on the list add anything to this? Jimmy Deguara here. As Michael is preparing to move up the coast, I will be acting in his position until the Annual General Meeting to be held in July. I suppose keeping the seat warm so to speak. Therefore, on behalf of all those on and off the list and members of ASWA. and AMOS, I would like to thank Michael Bath for his overwhelming contributions to the list and help in the formation of ASWA. I hope everyone appreciates the amount of time that Michael has dedicated to this cause. Could you all put your hands together to show your appreciation. And NO he is NOT really leaving altogether. He will still be part of the list, in ASWA and storm chasing. But on a personal level, I will certainly miss him as a friend and storm chasing partner. We have done many hit and miss chases together since 1993 and I suppose this will be the most notable change. Now, I would like to welcome all those on and also those off the list who have taken the opportunity to join ASWA. At the last count there were around 40 members or so with the promise of more to join very soon. If you wish to join the Australian Severe Weather Association ASWA, you can benefit from access to radar which is worth $600 per year and automatic subscription to the Newsletter Storm News which I think anyone will find interesting reading. At meetings, which is open to members and visitors, you will find it interesting to become part of close group of dedicated weather enthusiasts. All of this for only $30 per year with radar and $20 per year without radar. There will be more information forwarded to the list in the near future regarding details on the ASWA T-Shirts. So if you feel you would like to become part of this establishment, you are welcome to join by printing out the membership form. http://www.severeweather.asn.au/meminfo/ There is more information on the ASWA site at http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ If you feel you would like to offer suggestions, please feel free to do so by contacting me or your state reps. Rod Aikman The squall line which has been progressing across Victoria all afternoon is approaching Melbourne. It has reintensified somewhat on the radar, with an area of 10-20 mm/hr near Geelong. We could be in for some fun and games. The warning notes possible winds to 95 km/h. However, you would never know this was happening if you were listening to FM radio in Melbourne. I have been doing some channel-surfing since the warning was issued at 1555 and no FM station has yet mentioned the severe squall warning in their weather reports, 50 minutes later. In the light of the Sydney hailstorm kerfuffle this is a singularly inglorious performance by the media. (The ABC, commendably, broadcast the warning 15 minutes after it was issued, which is the sort of timescale I'd consider reasonable). First to Chas: the radar sequence, I have compiled from BOM radar. Therein lies my problem. I need to find a Gif animator that uses Gif files - can anyone help me? I currently have converted the sequence to an AVI file 230Mb in size, though I still have the original radar pics(the AVI file is obviously way too big!) The meeting was a success. There were 28 in attendance at the meeting. Some important notes in terms of the meeting are summarized. -A general overview of thunderstorms was discussed and also severe thunderstorms. Some of the simplified theory was also covered such as LI and CAPE. -Three case studies of supercells including the Sydney supercell was discussed: 28th October 1995 Classic supercell CAPE around 2300 LI I think -8 or thereabouts 18th December 1998 LI -10 14th April Sydney Supercell hail event In this supercell event, Robb Webb suggested that even though 9cm hail was the only one measured, it is now accepted that hail size in the most extreme damage areas was probably 10 to 11 cm in diameter. Another important point (and perhaps people should reflect on the radar images in the report), the second major cell is being investigated as a possible second supercell. This is unusual as this almost followed the same path as the first major supercell. Normally, once a supercell goes through, the energy used up by the supercell eliminates the possibility of other storms developing let alone supercells.. We will see what the findings are of this second cell. Incidently, it was the second cell which most of the media footage would have centred on. There is only brief home video footage of the massive hail chunks splashing in a pool from the first supercell. Obviously the hail kept in the freezers and shown afterwards on people's hands were from the first cell. It was the best Weatherwatch meeting in terms of enthusiasm from those in attendance and attendance numbers. And a good showing of 9 ASWA members. Thanks guys for your efforts. I think the AMOS committee really appreciated it.
