Mt Read a station we can see from here on a clear day had 445mm for the month. We are expecting some clearing showers today. This next system looks like it could be interesting, AVN is going off with the LI's at the moment.. we'll see, as i've said many times already all the models are shocking at the moment.. and the LI's of course would be effected as well.. Wednesday 09/06/99 midnight: The low depicted off the NSW coast on the chart is considered unlikely. On Wednesday, the high will move into the southern Tasman Sea, and coastal winds will tend E to NE. A front moving through the Bight will reach Adelaide late Wednesday, and is expected to bring warm, freshening northwest winds and some late rain to the far west of the state. Whilst some are looking for an ECL, I am lookin (in vain at the moment) for those blue and purple thickness lines (in the FNMOC models) to come surging northwards over SE Aust. They seem stuck well south of 40 south for the moment. It looks like the south west of WA has had more surges of cold air so far this winter. I observed snow falling on about half a dozen different occassions here in Blackheath last year with only the one decent fall that settled for up to two days in shaded or protected areas. There was a good cover (for us) on the ground that day and the temperature hovered around zero for most of that day. There were light settlings on other days (mostly at night, melting by mid-morning) and we had a number of heavy flurries that didn't settle much because of the wind on various other days. There was one day when I was at Mt Victoria pub (long story - seperated from my partner for a few weeks - two family members died of cancer last year, very tough) and as I was sitting there, (crying), the snow started to teem down. God it was good to see that. It was heavy, wet snow, sticking to everything but the wind didn't let it settle much. Very large flakes tumbled along the road and settled in the pub garden. Beautiful. What's your altitude Andrew? I've got pics of good snow in Oberon around '93 that was were taken days after the snow fell, and yet it still totally covered the ground at Shooters Hill, around 1365 metres i think. We had a November fall in '96, pretty decent and a pretty good one in august of that year too. '97 was light with just the one fall, I think, and '98, like I said was good fun for us. Lindsay P. Oh - and film's important :) Seriously though - if you are new to SLR's then go to a 2nd hand bookshop and grab some books - it'll tell you all about how the light meter works, depth of field and shutter speed considerations. I'm not familiar with the SRT - but if it has an auto-mode then you can always use that until you get more confortable with the manual overides. Then you can start buying lenses, tripods, filters, flashes, motor drives, film backs... :) cheers, Chris At 19:37 6/06/99 , you wrote: >Hey Ben from Brisbane here.. > >Just wondering, is there anyone out there who knows much about cameras? >I scored myself an SLR camera tonight, but it doesn't have any >instructions whatsoever and i wouldn't have the faintest clue how to use >it.. There seems to be some concern about what is happening in terms of ASWA. Please print and read the following to get some ideas of how we wish certain issues should be dealt with and where we are heading. As people know, ASWA was developed to bring together people of a common interest. We have achieved a lot with the help of many putting in the hours willingly. We now have: -an organisation which has been incorporated and therefore recognised -a web site that doesn't really reveal the many hours of work that has been done to it, all hidden within the script -regular meetings that help people to learn, share ideas and communicate about their favourite topic - severe weather -regular activities such as video nights and chases which have been organised within each state for the enjoyment and fulfilment of all those able or willing to attend -a developing database for collection of storm data -T-shirts with ASWA logo -a list of observation lookouts around Australia -setting up of radar -who knows what else. What else is being planned: -damage survey projects -education projects in various states are under planning -business cards for distribution to the general public (some have already been done) -CSA (Community Services Announcements) -brochures -stalls in shopping centres -we are using these ideas and other ways to educate as well as encourage those interested in severe weather to join. So this is one of the high priorities as well as giving the value for money for members in ASWA. Education of members within ASWA is a top priority is also important and their are many resources such as the list and the web sites for people to learn more. I myself have learnt so much in this way. These have all been done thanks to those who have spent their precious hours coming up with the ideas and/or volunteering to take part in doing them. As you can see, much has been achieved in a very small time. However, their has been a lot of activity that has been going on behind the scenes that simply do not show. The incorporation of ASWA for one and coming up with the rules took a lot of time. Their has also been so much time dedicated by state reps in attracting the right people with personalised e-mails which believe it can take a fair bit of time getting together. Meetings and discussion with the Bureau trying to get their feedback and involvement in close association with ASWA. Their has been a lot of other things I simply cannot recall. Now, there have been people getting edgy about certain issues. Please read the follwing procedures so that you can get some idea of how things should operate more eficiently: If you send an e-mail for discussion about an issue - try and make it brief and to the point - if people don't resond, try again - if this doesn't work, e-mail your state rep or myself and see if it ok for it to go ahead If it is a state idea and doesn't involve funds from ASWA or anything of legal importance, run the idea by me and I will give my thoughts. There is no need to get frustrated about no input from others and so on. Please be aware of what others are doing and give feedback such as improvements or problems directly to those concerned off the list. It is downgrading for those involved to receive such feedback over the list especially after they have spent countless hours doing so. Please note that things can only happen slowly. There is a lot of energy out there but please be patient. Write your ideas down on paper and run them by the list so that others can see what is a possibility for their area. If you can't do something yourself, then be patient and wait. It can sometimes take months or even up to a year for some things to be initiated. For instance, Paul Graham had set up the system of reporting storms to be input into a central database. I had mentioned for people to volunteer helping with this task so that all storms on the list can be listed and placed either manually or automatically into a database. Since nobody volunteered, it has been put aside. It is not that urgent but it would be good if someone could do it. Your ideas and enthusiasm is appreciated but if you don't have people willing to do it, then it will have to wait unless you do it. Again, run it by me or your state reps. Some people also foirget that people do other things besides reading messages on the list. Some people have periods where things at work or associated with work or even home gets really busy. I for instance am in the process of marking examinations and writing reports. So you will find that I will not be as active as I could be. Please try and be as positive in your comments as well as proactive. Have respect for others' views and ideas. Give recommendations and not demands as it sometimes appears to be in some messages. Read your e-mail thoroughly before pressing the send button. Keep all those on the list in mind before sending the message. How will it affect them? Don't just assume that common idea of freedom of speech!!!! People have asked for me to provide a set of guidelines so I hope I have covered some of them. As I said, print this out and keep it in mind. These points are important when you get frustrated and don't know what you need to do. This is not really a debating point please. Respect the time I have invested in putting together this e-mail and just think about the points. If you don't agree with some or all these points, e-mail me rather than slamming me or others on the list. I and others get hurt by such comments and feel like giving up. I am a person that tries to see everyone happy and constructive. I don't like to be bossy as I believe that everyone is in this together. It has been my dream to get something like ASWA up and running and without your support and cooperation, it will get tarnished. Thanks for your valuable time.
