Im prolly working so either Saturday arvo or Sunday arvo would suit. Please email me, not the list and let me know what your preference would be as in time. Also we need a venue, Greg suggested the Airo club in jandakot which has buffet meals for $15 including deserts. One suggestion i have is Rosie Ogradys on Canning hwy South Perth, its a nice atmosphere and they have good meals for under $10, plus they have awesome beer!! Anyway thats just two suggestions, if you have any more let me know and also let me know your preference for time, ta Ira Fehlberg +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 002 Date: Wed, 09 Jun 1999 08:11:33 +1000 From: Ben Quinn [bodie at flatrate.net.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.6 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: rain rain & more rain.... This flash was immediately followed by a small white light that emerged from the clouds and travelled towards the ground at about 30' to the perpendicular and was moving quite slowly. The light then "burned" out at about 400 feet above the ground. I straight away thought "space debris" but if that was so it would have seemed to be moving a hell of alot faster than it was considering the range was only about 5 kilometres and it must have been pretty big to make it that close to the ground without burning up. The guy's in IRC are fairly certain it was debris but I can't seem to reconcile that with the apparent speed of the object. I have also thought of ball lightning but I don't know enough about the phenomena to make an educated decision. So if there is anyone out there that knows more about it than I do (wouldn't be hard) please gimme an opinion. I suspect they are automatically generated forecasts. Agreed. Just try making sense out of the 2m temperature plots from AVN and MRF for a given location. You even get a different result if you enter the latitude and longitude! Something tells me that the dataset is a bit wonky. At the other extreme, if I take the 700mb temp and the 850mb temp for Perisher Valley at -36.41S / 148.41E, then work out what the temp would be at Perisher's altitude (it's a linear interpolation calculation), over the last 3 weeks, this has been within -1.5C of recorded dayly maximums and +0.5C within recorded dayly minimums for 75% of the forecasts. That's not too bad IMHO particularly when I can't find any reference to diurnal corrections applied to either model. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Craig, Meteorites are a strange thing because they are so bright and so fast that they tend to give a bit of an optical illusion. Sometimes a piece of space junk travelling at many times the speed of sound, at a narrow angle of approach, and burning VERY brightly tricks us into thinking that something reasonably bright is travelling fairly slowly quite close. The only visual clues we have are brightness and angular speed across the sky. Chances are you saw something come in at a shallow angle moving away from you. It may have been travelling extremely fast away from you, but only travelling reasonably slowly towards the ground. The "burning out" may have been it actually burning out, or getting dimmer as it moves away, or merely moving out of sight as it crosses over the horizon. cheers, Chris At 09:21 9/06/99 , you wrote: OK..please don't ring the funny farm..I think the guy's on IRC are going to:-) Last night while driving to work (Brisbane) at about 10.15pm, we had complete overcast, I saw a very small flash in the clouds (about 20 metres dia.). Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com To me it sounds very much like a meteor or space debris, I don't think ball lightning would be a factor. How fast would you say it was going? I have seen many meteors that have had a very slow movement through the air before cooling down, some of these are called fireballs. There were some other reports of people seeing Meteors last few nights aswell.
