Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com There have been anecdotal reports on the radio of snow falling in Kambah (southern Canberra suburb) over the last hour (ie between 4 and 5pm 15/6/99). I saw the cloud concerned which looked like it had solid precipitation falling pretty close to ground level (from my location in Barton, I couldn't actually see the precipitation falling at ground level). To give these reports greater credence, I would have liked to have seen the airport temp lower than the 6 that was showing at 1600. The airport is, however, further from the ranges and in a much sunnier position in the SW stream than the southern and western suburbs. So a 2 or 3 degree temperature discrepancy is certainly possible. Also the cloud in question was fairly significant (even had an anvil) so there could have been a cold outflow effect as well. In its 1530 issue, the BoM has forecast the possibility of snow falls in Canberra tonight. The low cloud tops suggest any falls will be light. Then again, I am an amateur at this, so I'm reticent to say too much. Now that I have had my "Lost" camera returned I should have the shots of this "Blowing snow" to show all and sundry. It'll take me a little while to do this as I have to send the pics to Melbourne as I don't have a scanner. They put them on disk for me, cheaply. I wasn't expecting to go to Oberon as I suffer from ME/CFS so my energy levels are up and down and I also have a lot of work to do in preparing my manuscript for an agent but hey, I got the bug, and nicked off to Oberon. One of the best shots I took is of me (I met two young women on the road out to Shooters - they actually took it) squatting in heaps of snow and another standing among the pines. I think it will give perspective on the amount of snow, up against me, if I send that one into Michael. The macro shots I've got of snow (maybe drift snow although it was in an open space) show my foot marks as I put them into the snow to hopefully indicate some sort of depth and then there's the car skid marks! Remember, I left the Shooters H. area whilst it was still snowing heavily, so I don't know how much more fell. God it was so much fun! I tried to get good shots of the heavy falling snow from all angles too and basically endeavoured to take lots of shots that folk much more expert than me can analyse and observe - and commment on. Mt Bindo is 4km west of the junction where the Oberon Road turns west off the Hartley--Jenolan Caves Road, and is accessible by the fire trail that takes off from the picnic area at the road junction. Bindo has a fire tower and transmitter on its peak, and there's a small secondary peak (unnamed, I think) about 2km to the south. The main fire trail goes between the two. Mt Trickett is some 18km SSW of Mt Bindo, and is a fairly insignificant bump on the main ridge line that connects the Shooters Hill high country with the high country around Jenolan State Forest. The Oberon to Jenolan Caves Road passes along the top of this ridge, with great views to the south into the Hollanders River valley. It's worth knowing for snow-chasers, because it is, I think, the highest mainish road in the area, and about 100m higher than the Oberon -- Shooters Hill Road. -- Laurier Williams Australian Weather Links and News http://www.ozemail.com.au/~wbc/ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 009 From: wbc at ozemail.com.au (Laurier Williams) To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Oberon - blowing snow Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 23:58:27 GMT X-Mailer: Forte Agent 1.5/32.452 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com On Tue, 15 Jun 1999 23:42:02 +1000, Ben Munro wrote: >At 07:13 15-06-99 GMT, Laurier Williams wrote: >>Mt Boyce AWS >>winds also need to be treated with some caution as the station, which >>is right opposite the truck checking station, is perched atop a steep >>slope to the west, below which is an unbroken cliff line. You're right again, Laurier. I thought it was the hill 2km south of Mt Bindo that was Mt. Trickett and you were describing that the Hartley-Jenolan Caves Rd to Oberon road went over the top of Mt. Trickett near Mt. Bindo! My topograhic maps are in Katoomba but you've jogged my memory of touring the Mt. Trickett area years ago during another snow-chase. Nevertheless, it's a great snow-chase area so close to Sydney if you know when and where to go. > Mt Trickett is some 18km SSW of Mt Bindo, and is a fairly > insignificant bump on the main ridge line that connects the Shooters > Hill high country with the high country around Jenolan State Forest. > The Oberon to Jenolan Caves Road passes along the top of this ridge, > with great views to the south into the Hollanders River valley. Yes, I remember playing golf at Katoomba Golf Course one Saturday (1981 I think) after there'd been a string of days where Katoomba could only muster -1 to 2, -1 to 3, 0 to 4, 0 to 4, 0 to 4 for perhaps a week just like the event we've just witnessed. It dumped snow out Oberon way. A couple of chaps pulled up in their car as I was about to tee off from the 4th hole (which backs to Cliff Drive) asking if the road they were on was heading towards the highway (it does). They had touring skis on their car roof to which I commented "arn't you a bit off-course for the ski fields? I can see some snow on the Central Tablelands. Is that where you're going?". Their answer was yes as they were meeting some mates from Bathurst who had been skiing in the region of Shooters Hill during that week! That's not hard to imagine with over 30cm of packed snow as would be the case this coming weekend also if it doesn't warm up too much - Here's hoping! The DP is 2C at the AP, but it is -1C here, and I would suspect even lower as you go further inland (I live in the eastern suburbs). I have told my mum to wake me up if there is frost (I have never seen frost in Brisbane before) As grass temperatures would likely to be below 0C. As you say - unusual for this time of year. There's also an interesting development in the Bight - the system is very complex according to the latest MSL chart. http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/national/charts/synoptic.shtml (bomw0007/aviation) Jane ONeill Bayswater, Melbourne On Sunday, 13 June 1999 7:31 Jimmy Deguara wrote: >Subject: aus-wx: tropical activity > > >If you take a look at the activity just north of Cape York, you will find >some activity which is unusual for this time of year. Talk about climatizing :) I remember some very cold nights staying with Brisbane friends in those nice cute queenslanders in Winter...brr..brr.. It's currently 1.8 at 10.00pm in Higgins - noticed Cooma is already -3. There will no doubt be Canberra people sitting out on the footpaths enjoying their coffees etc at the moment as they have all week with temps not getting anywhere near double figures even in the middle of the day. Whilst people on the list will no doubt have their views about Canberrans, I suspect the indoor smoking ban has more than a little to do with such behaviour. You need to be tough to indulge the weed down here!! By the way the latest 144hr MRF looks very interesting for early next week with a low developing over inland NSW and cold air coming in from the SSE (bringing some of the NZ cold outbreak into eastern NSW). NGP has the low more to the NW with heavy rain on the northern NSW coast. Either of these developments will no doubt generate a lot more emails on this list...
