Erm..... isn't ASWA open to australians ONLY????

And if you are interested/have any questions please feel free to mail

Can any exceptions be made here for international participants or perhaps create an ASWA Iinernational for expat Ozzies / foreigners??

ASWA is open to everyone, Australian or international. As Matthew said,
international participants are exempted from needing to be with ASWA :)
You are more then welcome to join ASWA if you like, though! :)
Membership is $20AUD without radar access, or $30AUD with radar access -
however, I don't believe an international price has been set yet
(subscription includes 4 copies of Storm News posted each year, and
international postage costs more than Australian postage) If you are
interested in becoming an ASWA member, then please let me know, and I'll
work out the costs involved, and then give you an indication on how much
it'll cost (fortunately for you, the cost is halved because of the pound
being so much strong then the AUD )

As I said - International participants will be exempted from the "ASWA
member only" rule.

Look forward to seeing you at the end of the year Les!

Theres a doctor friend of my wife who's from Ballina, NSW studying over here
in Newcastle upon Tyne, England - when Christine mentioned that we were going
to NSW to chase storms she said "great big thumping storms in Ballina"....
seems to be somewhat supercell prone, does this place..... (:

OK go for it - 2 x international membership of ASWA with radar access (usefull
when we r there) or husband and wife membership if such a thing exists! Let
us know how we can get your Pacific Pesos to you - perhaps the easiest way is
getting $AU here at a bereau de change then sending them by post!!! Certainly
bank charges to transfer ozzie dollars mite work out more. There's always VISA
if your bank / BS does e-commerce.... NSW is probably more advanced than the
UK for this sort of thing!

We've even managed to get the baby dumped for 3 weeks - we're gonna b there
and wer'e both looking forward to sun, sea, sand, s*x and especially STORMS!!
35 degree temperatures would have our youngster fried in no time and it's
best to leave her here.... we'll both have to be liberal with the sunblock (:
Oz here we come.

Bring on the giant hail, non stop lightning, gust fronts, wall clouds, pulse
severe storms, supercells and tornadoes please - i'm saving my Virgin Net
freespace for it!

There are people that we know over here who think nothing of going down
disused mineshafts or hanging upside down offa glaciers who think that "wer'e
mad coz its dangerous"... fortunately we'll be in expert hands as we could
easily end up going the wrong way being in the southern hemi the last thing we
want is ending up in the bears cage with a T7 for company or having our nice
shiny hired ute being battered by H7 hail ):

There's always Darwin for big regular storms or even regular tourism - type -
things in NSW if it all ends up as a bust.

No haven't Ben. Would love to,very slight chance I might early tomorrow
but only slight. I agree with you,it didn't seem to feel that cold, the
snow that is. It was quite dry and crunchy even in places at Shooters.
Hopefully my photos will pick that up.

Yes,it was a tremendous experience.

It'll only affect postage costs. I'll have the $$ on Mon June
21 after I've visited the bank and the post office.

Watch out Les:-) Many Brits end up finding that earnings v/s
cost-of-living-lifestyle matters in Oz are much better off
than in the UK. I worked out the logistics of this two years
back and reasoned that to maintain our standard of living
that we have in Oz in the UK needed 2.5x salary in AUD value.
Take the AUD, add 20-30% and call it UK-Pounds.

As for the logistics of paying ASWA Inc., in my capacity as
Treasurer, ASWA Inc., I will approach the bank on Monday to
enquire and report. No promises yet re: Visa etc. but
payment in UK-Pound to a Westpac Branch in the UK (I know
of two at least, one in Maidenhead and another in central

Hello Everyone,

We sure got lucky, taking our caravan to Wellington Caves for the weekend. When we were between Lithgow and Bathurst on Friday about 11 am the snow was already settling lightly around the hills. We were able to observe the other side of the snow event from the freezing Wellington area. Unfortunately since we were mostly travelling in convoy with the other members of the caravan club, we didn't get any photos of the sky.

In answer to David Croan's question from 11th May, about the rumour regarding warning signs. No we didn't see one. We looked as far as Narromine and all around Dubbo, Wellington and Burrendong Dam. The only sign we saw was one??? snow sign and those intriguing signs at the Lithgow end of the Hartley Valley about flashing road markers, which flash when ice forms. Does anyone know how they work and what powers them. Had us puzzled.

We had to return home through Mudgee to avoid the snow because of the caravan and that led to much disappointment. We did drive through snow at Lithgow and again at Katoomba though. Even if it was to warm for it to settle on the ground.

Frank, Judy, Adam and Maree Mayo.

Hi Steve,

You'll probably found that the wind rose a little after you recorded
2.5C, this stirs the air around (cooler air on the ground, warmer air
just aloft) and warms the temperature up. This can greatly affect the
time of the min.

As for when the expected time of the min, it generally occurs just after
sunrise (not just before) the reason for this is it takes a little while
for the net ingoing solar radiation to equal, and eventually exceed that
of the net outgoing radiation.

Hypothetical Example:
You lose 100 units of heat per hour - this is a constant (assume no
other affect from wind/clouds) during the night, you have 100 units of
heat going out, and 0 units of heat coming in. At sunrise, you still
have 100 units of heat going out, but the Sun is so weak, you may only
be receiving 40 units of heat, and this results in a deficit of 60 units
of heat, and the temperature will still decrease (just more slowly).
The minimum will occur when you have 100 units of heat ingoing/outgoing
- once the amount of incoming heat exceeds the outgoing heat (eg, 120
units coming in) you can expect a rise in temperature.

Hope this helps,

Anthony Cornelius

The Calder Highway between Melbourne and Bendigo (Vic) also has these
in the Macedon area (where the road reaches ~620m).

I don't know for sure, but I'd always assumed that it's triggered by
a simple temperature sensor - it doesn't seem to make any difference
if there is moisture about or not.

Comment about the Lithgow "flashers":-) The last time that
I traversed the area on my way to Bathurst, I noticed these
and enquired about them. At the time, the system in that
particular area was under trial. It's a particularly bad
spot as it almost never gets sun in winter ensuring that
a really good frost could hang around all day. It's also
a spot where the frost first forms of an evening for the
same reasons - a colder than normal spot.

I was told that the trial system has individual sensors
fitted with a lithium battery. Each operates independently
in response to temperature only. They flash when the temp
falls below freezing. The flasher itself with battery has
a lifetime of about 3 years, costs about $20 in quantities
over 100 and is replaced in the maintenance cycle along
with other cat's eye reflectors on the road. The system
would pay for itself if it saves just one life in 3 years.

Yikes - does that mean a life is worth $20 over 3 years in

Well, it doesn't look like we'll get the 12C we were promised.
All morning the S/Sc has been building up and the temp has dropped
from around 8C at lunch down to 6.9 at 1:15.

Almost looks like we'll get more drizzle any minute.

There are a few thousand needed in just a few km of road.
Work out the maths. Insurance values of the average "life"
is less than $250k. Cost to the community and family of a
lost person? That could vary from a bonus in some cases to
invaluable in others:-) On a more serious note, however,
the value of improving roads and public transport is hardly
ever compared with the total cost of non-action. How often
do you see insurance companies funding new roads or public
transport infrastructure based on a reduced exposure risk
analysis that reduces lives lost or damage to property and
the environment? It's easier the jack up premiums instead.

Hi all again,
It's now 2hrs since my last email, and the squall line has
appeared to intensify - extending NW toward Ceduna(as per radar). Adelaide
and SE SA could have an interesting evening, considering the BoM has posted a
SEVERE WEATHER ADVICE as per 4.15pm local time - half an hour ago.
I'm saving radar pics if anyone is interested, for an animated gif.
Cheers Peter.

Yeah Peter, plenty of 'red pixels' in this sucker.

Here in Adelaide the horizon's getting very dark, but we're gonna loose
daylight before the thing arrives. Still - we might get a decent lightning
show.

As far temperatures are concerned 40-42C once west of the divide is a
distinct possibility in December, although we hope not as it usually means a
dry NW airstream, then again there has to be a line between that and
tropical air somewhere in Queensland and that could be interesting.

Just going through the 9am observations for today and it says that Ballina
AWS had 9mm in last 24 hours, pretty suspect considering the bone dry west
wind. Also a min of -2C, a bit sus' as well.

Michael B what were your observations ?

The "visiting" page is now dummy (i.e. old) data only. To get the real

Michael and everyone,

I too wonder about some of these observations. Last weekend, I noticed that
Holesworthy had -2C two days in a row which made us look like wimps here in
the real cold west (obviously it has been fixed). Now although I think the
Penrith AWS station is working properly, I wonder whether there really is a
difference of up to 2C between Penrith and Richmond. I note this as the
summer maximums also have varied up to around 1 to 2C above Richmond. For
instance, there were several times when Penrith recorded temps 1 or 2 C
higher than Richmond. I am NOT saying that it's not possible but after this
winter reading, I think it may have to be properly checked. Perhaps there
is a heat island effect in the area......

Further to this, there have been many instances when Alan Williams has told
me of stories when rainfall at AWS stations are improperly calibrated and
hence give absolutely rediculous data. You would think you were in the tropics.

Nevertheless, I now don't have full faith in these unmanned money-saving
stations. The price we have to pay for suspect data. Obviously there are
advantages, but it is sad that money-saving and gathering has really taken
hold in the 90's.

Hey Jane, everyone..

I've been watching that system on the models for the past 3 days.. it
looks like it will move through the bass straight close to Melbourne
tomorrow in a somewhat weakened form.. it has certainly stirred things
up around Adelaide late thisafternoon with plenty of red on radar..
Andrew Wall and his girlfriend were out chasing as well, and are still
out there as fas as i know (7pm QLD time)..

Although it's a LONG way out on the models, i have my eye on an upper
level system MRF and EC have for the eastern states early/mid next
week.. BOM have also picked this up.. right now i'd give anything to get
rid of these SW'rs!!

Hi everyone Jimmy here,

Recently, probably a few weeks back, I had forwarded a request based on the
WA minutes of the meeting but as usual, some items go uncommented on. It
was in regards to getting a group of volunteers to take charge of recording
storms into a database.

Obviously we already have a severe storm form (thanks Paul Graham) to fill
in but personally it keeps getting forgotten and I really believe it would
be more effective if this 'new group' takes ownership and responsibility.
What I suspect should be done is that all storm reports particularly severe
are collated into a central database. We could have one person from each
state doing their bit or just have a whole group of a few people making
sure all storms mentioned on the list including archives prepared by
Michael Bath are analysed as well.

Do we have any volunteers?? I know I would have like to but I have too much
things on my plate.. One of the advantages which is why I would have liked
to do it is that you get to read most storm reports. I believe a central
database is essential even if I have to take the job on myself. It will
also gives others who would like to chase up a report in the past easy
access. For instance, someone may tell you that they were told on the 28th
October 1995, there was a tornado reported near Camden or even large hail
to be a little more serious. You would go back and find there was a
supercell that went through the area.

Anyway, if there is anyone interested, please contact me or perhaps
announce on the list. Or perhaps discuss your impressions of the idea. It
keeps nagging me in my brain.... You don't have to have any qualifications
as such as there are people who could prepare a database with a lot of
flexibility. It is even possible with Visual Basic to come up with a
windows program that can perpare a database and also convert it to html for
internet use and cgi......

What are your thoughts
well you guessed it

Their reliability is a problem, and one that the Bureau recognises
though I'm not aware of any plans they have to rectify the situation.
Blair may be. It is also a factor in their thinking as to just what
data will be made generally available, given that quality control on
real time data is very difficult to attain. While most errors are
gross and easy to spot -- like the wind gusts to 79 knots at Fort
Denison in Sydney Harbour, with sustained speeds of 3 knots, or minima
of minus 29 in the tropics, I do worry about the number of wrong but
credible readings there may be. Probably the biggest problem is that
AWSs occasionally go off air for days at a time -- Tamworth AWS, the
only weather station representing that major city -- has had problems
like this since it was installed, resulting in a discontinuous and
nearly unusable rainfall record.

>Nevertheless, I now don't have full faith in these unmanned money-saving

I think it pays not to have faith in any stations, manned or
otherwise. Even airport stations manned by trained observers have been
known to get things wrong. You need to seek confirmation for anything
that seems out of the ordinary.

Non-Bureau staff stations, especially those that only report at 9 and
3 have their share of problems. Observations can be done too early or
late, wet bulb wicks not attended to, and I've stood with one
long-time observer at a 3-hourly reporting lighthouse station and
watched him judge what I would have called 5 octas of large Cu as 2
octas of Sc. I would guess that one of the most common human observer
errors is misreading graduated scales by 5 or 10, so that 1010hPa
becomes 1015, 20C becomes 25C -- often hard to detect unless other
stations are nearby. The most insidious problem is changes in site
exposure -- the asphalt carpark or fence that gets built right beside
the screen, for example. Some years ago, when Braidwood PO staff got
all enthusiastic, they painted the whole PO pink, including the
screen. Lithgow maxima were loopy for months when the observer exposed
the thermometers on a shady wall while the screen was away being
fixed. The raingauge at Jenolan Caves has been moved several times to
my knowledge, each time after a tree has been growing over it for some
years.

My preference would be for manned automatic wx stations, and there are
some that operate like this. The auto obs are done each hour or half
hour, and at fixed times the human observer adds visual obs (cloud,
visibility) and basic climatological data like max/min/rain from
separate instrumentation. Unfortunately, from the Bureau's point of
view, this is the worst of both financial worlds. You also need to
keep in mind that the present profusion of new AWSs is being paid for
by once-only budget allocations to the Bureau. Complain to your
politician, not the Bureau which is only too well aware of the
problems.

So what we're left with is

--AWS obs which are always on time and more frequent than all but
major airport manned stations can achieve, but are occasionally
erroneous and have problems maintaining a continuous climatic record,
and

--human obs which have their own set of unreliabilities.

So cross-check, cross-check, cross-check -- everything!

There's a very good network of AWS's in the Adelaide and Adelaide
Hills area, so it'll be interesting to see what gusts and rain they
report.

I think this is a classic CVA, or convection vorticity advection
event. If you animate the JCU satpics from 18z to 09z, you can see
major development of the cloud in the head of the comma, where the
tail of the comma is the cloud along the cold front advancing into
Victoria, and the head is back to the west of Adelaide. If you animate
a sequence of vis satpix for 00, 03 and 06z, you can see how the CVA
is at the leading edge of a tongue of cold air (speckled cloud).

I'm not great in this area -- anyone else hazard a guess?

I can assure you all that there has been no rain in the district for a week
now. I saw a 10mm for Ballina on Tues and that was certainly an error as
well, but definitely no rain.

4.9 degrees this morning at Wollongbar, 1 at Lismore, not sure of the
reading for Ballina. Day max are typically only reaching 17 here for the
past several days, which is not that common, giving 100% sunny days.

Hi all,

Currently (9.30pm 17/6) it is just 5.2 in the Wollongbar screen. We're at
an elevation of 155 metres, about 12km from the coast at Ballina (~ 29
degrees South). We're also on a ridge, and the land drops away sharply
about 15 metres to a creek.

Could get a frost here after all.

Not much of a storm really mainly heaps of rain in it with strong gusting
winds, Myself, Kathryn, and my sister went down to Seaford tonight and
mainly encountered these events even though we saw about 5 flashes of
lightning but unsure what type. The lightning frequency was somewhere
between 4 and 5 minutes a strike so it wasnt that spectacular anyway. As we
drove down south road which funny enough goes down south hehehe, we were in
the middle of what we call down here a downpour, I could hardly see the
cars infront of me and I had to drive leaning forward for most of the time
because I couldnt see the little white lines on the road, so I was guessing
most of the time. Overall I thought by the look of it on radar it would
have been more spectacular just goes to show that you cannot always trust
radar in these cases. I think I will go back to instinct.

Hi Andrew

Radar indicates probably rainfall... whether or not there is
thunder/lightning mixed up in it is another thing i guess.. did u get any
hail ?

I said on IRC last night that there was a few setups that formed storms,
these are, storms formed in troughs (summer), convergence lines ( ahead of
a low), frontal storms (along the front) and storms in the cold pool of air
behind the front. Someone else said that there was alos orographice storms.
I said this was incorrect as the word "orographic" describes the lifting
mechanism not the storm and this would occur inside on of the above
mentioned systems. I was cut apart by Anthony Cornelius, Ben Quinn and Matt
Smith who insisted that i was wrong. I cleary stated that storms do form by
orographic lifting ( i have the conversation logged) but that the orograph
part is the lifting mechanism, not the storm. Maybe im wrong. Can some one
please tell me if this is so? I would welcome any comments to help clear
this up for me.

Hi all,

After a nice fiery debate in the #weather room in irc there
were a few questions that remained somewhat grey. I thought
that they would be interesting to post to the list to see
what others thought about these ideas.

What are the types of thunderstorms that occur and what
would be there name?

In the room we came up with a few but the hotly debated one
was,
is there an "orographic thunderstorm" or just one that is
caused by orographic lifting?

It really comes down to the names that we give them.

Any places in the world that might get a thunderstorm that
we could classify as a such?

For coastal NSW folks it looks like the models all agree that the present
dry pattern will finally break Tue - Wed next week. MRF, NGP and GASP all
look remarkably similar for next week and have high pressure south of
Australia allowing E/SE winds to develop along the coast. However the models
do vary slightly in the placement of low pressure and troughs. GASP on its
Wednesday frame has a nice trough off the NSW north coast looking as though
it may develop into a East Coast low. NGP also has this, but not as well
defined, but NGP does have 540 thickness over SE Australia on Monday -
Tuesday with onshore winds, this may give a better chance for a southern
highlands - blue mountains dusting.

One thing I have noticed in the last few weeks and that is east of New
Zealand has been the place to be. No wonder a surfing contest footage from
Tahiti I saw a few days ago had perfect 12ft barrels. Perhaps even southern
California would be going off, you would be surprised just how much some
surfers know about weather, many of southern California's best south swells
have come from depressions east of New Zealand, and I know that the surf
forecast gurus watch the Pacific wide weather maps.

Thanks Laurier, I really enjoyed reading these !!!!

Some years ago, when Braidwood PO staff got
all enthusiastic, they painted the whole PO pink, including the
screen. Lithgow maxima were loopy for months when the observer exposed
the thermometers on a shady wall while the screen was away being
fixed. The raingauge at Jenolan Caves has been moved several times to
my knowledge, each time after a tree has been growing over it for some
years.

I will throw my two cents in, I suppose it gets down to whether you want to
class thunderstorms by their lifting mechanism - orographic, frontal, etc,
or by structure as in single cell, multi cell, etc.

In the end whatever method it is a bit like cloud classifications, there are
grey shades, not black and white boundaries. You can get storms like the
August Wollongong flash flood ( yes it was a thunderstorm ) which have
several mechanism playing, orographic being just one player.

Hi all

I remember looking through the obs last night and strangely the Ballina
reading was updated at 2236 and read -2. I laughed when I saw it.

Well its a cold night here in Brisbane.
I'm in the southern suburbs and here are some readings
7.15pm: 9.5C
7.30pm: 8.7C
7.45pm: 8.2C

8.45pm: 7.2C
9.00pm: 7.1C
9.15pm: 6.8C

10.45pm: 5.9C
11.00pm: 6.0C
11.15pm: 6.1C
11.30pm: 5.9C
11.45pm: 5.7C

Its slowly but surely going down...might get a 2-3C min temp with a light
frost here.

Regards
James
