Thunder/Lightning has been constant here with no rain, but the coast is
getting all of that, and a fantastic lightning show has been on, although
on radar it is easing off considerably as it moves over land.
Anvil crawlers which stretch 1/2 the sky and reach right overhead and just
seem to grow and spread out *drool* :), also saw one that i thought would
be a CC only to move south and then down into a double CG *drool again*.
Constant thunder can still be heard as the system moves north.
Tried a few photos but where i live isnt to crash hot for photography.Ill
see how things turn out.

We have a lovely big storm off the coast right now. Have to go to Homebush first then we will be back to try for some lightning shots. Bright flashes of lightning every 30 seconds.

No storms, no rain, not even a good frost - but we did get an earthquake
in Canberra around midnight - nice little rumbler around midnight.

It seems that the cold pool of air has stagnated now.

It look extremely promising this morning with explosive convection ocurring on
the edge of the "pool". Now there is heaps of stratocu around with cb's still
close to the cost, and a light SE is drifting in.

The outlook sounds promising though with Thundery rain this arvo and rain
(moderate to heavy) to Monday. Bring it on.......

Paul (back at Taree!!)

Ps mark - you looked real good this morning!!

Hi Everyone

This is a breif email to let you all know what happened. Jimmy, you will
like this :)

BTW im very tired, any spelling errors or things that dont make sense, to
bad :)

finished an 8 hour shift at 11.30 last night, on IRC for another hour,
noticed a small cell develope near Nowra, and mentioned to Steve (Bayns)
from the Gold Coast that if anything developes ill let the thunder wake me
up,.. little did i know it actually would !!!

Anyway to cut it short, drove down Anzac Parade to Maroubra as i think has
the best viewing spots N/E/S along the coast.
Lightning was still frequent (4.45 i left home) (you all know about the
anvil CC/CG stuff i saw earlier.)

*Rice grain sized hail and heavy rain about 5am around UNSW.

*Lightning CG and CC continued occasionally until 9ish...

*New development off the coast had me staying there until 10am
watching.(one of which appeared to show a back sheared anvil, the cell has
now gone pink on radar) just off the coast. And is about to affect the area
i was just in *doh!*

*Hail 1.5-2cm was found in huge piles in Drains and in Drifts along walls
and on steps of houses/units on the main steet of Maroubra.I found the
biggest ones and put them next to a ruler and took a photo. Some kids who
were playing in it i asked them if it was loud, and they said "it was very
loud, the hail covered the whole road but then the rain washed most of it
away". An indication of what i had missed, but im not complaining.

*Tree's etc had leaves strewen over the roads, stripped by hail.

*A nice lowering on a cell just NE of the city (over the ocean). Praying
for a waterspout but it didnt happen :(

*Closest lightning was a crack-boom type one in the ocean, very bright and
very loud :)

Fantastic stuff !!!
I decided to call it quits cause i am totally stuffed (tired/hungry) im
going to try and get some sleep before work tonight.

Ill write up a more detailed report tomorrow as i have the day off.. and
ill bring the photos to the ASWA meeting on Saturday.

Heres hoping for some more tonight and tomorrow.

Hey all!!

Some nice storms off our coast, and certainly off Ballina...they've had
160CG's in an hour there! Certainly, for winter there isn't some bad
structure (from what I saw on the bus). There was Cb off the coast at
7:45am in the morning, this was to the far SSE, I saw this from a
vantage point on the bus.

Lightning tracker is still going, although much weaker, the URL is:
http://bastion.energex.com.au/strike/

MB - what do you have to report, or are you out chasing????

Yo Michael,

Energex lightning tracker showing plenty of activity just South of Ballina. You should have something.

There's been thunder since 11.30am here at Wollongbar. A clump of cells has
persisted SE of Ballina but has edged closer with some showers in the town
now, as well as large cu spreading inland a bit. Cb tops are not all that
high, but they have been nice to watch, as its been generally sunny over
the land (up till half an hour ago). I'm surprised how much activity in
showing up on the lightning tracker.

If the latest GASP run is accurate, there's going to be some serious
flooding on the north coast by the weekend:

cheers, Michael

Hey there are several large CB's now wandering in off the Sea towards us. Great
"boiling" on the side edge's of the mass as well. Hopefully they will get here
and dump some rain. Been very dry here lately, with only 40odd mm received so
far this month.

Heres hoping...

There's some showers that have developed in NE NSW, and are now creeping
into SE QLD (in the border range area). I have a horrible view...keep

Paul - please stop, you have us all thinking now :-) J/K!

Plenty of showers near Moree to Walget...as well as one long line of
storms off the coast! Still weak showers on the far border ranges...

Yeah but the radar for here is about as useful as your television because it is
so far from any station.

On the ground obs. are always more accurate, as you would know.

Raining here now, with heavy rain falling near the coast

Hi Jimmy here,

As you might expect, there was a cold pool of air aloft. Forecast changed
this morning I can say. The Bureau will have to start looking out that
window. They are not having much luck with the hail...

But as you may have guessed, the action as typical with these conditions
were and are coastal. We only got a shower here inland at Schofields.
Sydney has one of the most varied climate in any Australian city and this
situation is another example. The following is a URL that gives a typical
photo of the type of conditions we had today.

http://www.australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/photography/photos/1992/06
26jd01.jpg

The cb's this arvo about the same time were more extensive than in the
photos but anvils facing and moving NW nevertheless. That day as I recall
had hail and very heavy rain during the morning around the airport and then
occasionally during the day. Well similar today.... Cold air type weather
with SE aistream.

Hi Everyone,

This morning on my way to work I witnessed the storms near Sydney. There was
some really spectacular cloud formations at times. One thing I noticed that
was unusual was that the anvils from the storms seemed to be in reverse to
what they normally would be. That is they were heading west instead of east
which I have rarely seen before. It was fascinating watching these storms
grow as I travelled down to the city by train. Unfortunately I missed out on
the thunder, lightning and hail as it had already moved on by the time I got
to work at 9am. For the rest of the day there was numerous heavy showers on
and off along the coastal fringe and occasionally they would affect the city
itself. I thought that we may have got another storm looking at the size of
the clouds moving in but it wasnt to be.

Just adding my own observations of this event:
At 5.30 am I stuck my head out the back door and was greeted with a huge
flash of sheet lightning coming from northern beach suburbs. Low scud
stratus was developing rapidly from the southeast with an increasing
higher overcast. There were further lightning flashes I would say about
every 2 or 3 minutes for the next half to 3/4 of an hour.
On the way down to the station at Seven Hills there was one long roll of
thunder but that was all, even after I got into the city about an hour
later. By that time the storm had well and truly moved northward and
appeared to be slowly dissipating.
When I got home today there had only been 0.2mm of rain! There were
intermittent showers in the city and some very large cumulus congestus
near the coast until well into the afternoon.
Offshore in the early morning the upper winds were clearly from the
northeast but by lunchtime they had swung around to the southeast.
(I think people in the train were thinking I was staring at them in my
attempts to observe the clouds offshore in the semi darkness..goes to
show they don't know what weather fanaticism really is..)

I like the last one Keith. When I had glasses, you would hear smash on the
glass in the train. I kept forgetting they were on and when I tried to look
at the weather.... By the way, get a seat near the window where possible.....

Another NSW AMOS meeting on the way. I may not attend this one so this is
up to you. If I drive to someone's place, I may go. I don't like driving in
the city. But don't let me influence your decision. (Note this is not an
ASWA meeting which is occurring this Saturday).

Meteorological Measurement to support Air Quality Research
Michael Johnson Air Science EPA NSW

Abstract:

EPA NSW has within its mission statement the duty of protecting the
environment. An obvious starting point for protecting something is to have
descriptions and models of the thing being protected, and how it behaves.
Thus meteorology is an important component of the work of EPA NSW in
protecting the air environment.

Pressures on air quality arise from both the everyday activities of the
population and from industrial processes. Current work at EPA NSW focuses
on the area extending from the upper Hunter valley to the Illawarra. This
domain includes the major industrial and population centres of New South
Wales.

EPA NSW is concerned with describing the complex flows arising within this
domain. Observations and computer models are used to generate these
descriptions. It is not sufficient to rely on surface observations as it is
the structure of the atmosphere in the lowest several kilometres which
affects air quality. Thus EPA NSW has run three observation campaigns
intended to collect data to describe the structure of the atmosphere in the
Hawkesbury basin. Results from these campaigns will be presented, mostly
from the most recent, this year.

The observation study conducted this year involved the deployment of an
acoustic sounder at Badgerys Creek from 9th February to 14th April. Within
that period results from four days will be presented. Atmospheric profiles
of wind will be presented and contrasted with the radar winds from Mascot.

The evolution of flows on these days will be presented with comments on how
these descriptions help to explain the observed spatial distribution of
surface ozone within the Sydney basin.

Brief results from the other two summer campaigns will be discussed, and in
particular data collected on the 25th and 26th of 1995. The flows suggested
by these data will be discussed within the context of current descriptions
of the flows of the Sydney basin and their interaction.

About the Speaker

Michael Johnson completed a Bachelor of Science (hons) at Melbourne
University in 1986, with honours year study in meteorology including a major
thesis on mesoscale modelling. This work led into postgraduate study
applying an existing mesoscale meteorology model to investigate the weather
conditions associated with elevated concentrations of ozone in Melbourne. He
spent twelve months with the Environment Protection Authority of Victoria
incorporating that meteorology model into the airshed model being developed.
In 1992 he joined the Environment Protection Authority of New South Wales as
a meteorologist and is currently a senior air scientist.

Dinner: The Committee will be dining with the Speaker at the nearby Furama
Restaurant from about 6:00pm. Members and their guests are welcome to join
the Committee at the dinner. Please contact Andrew Treloar (details below)
