Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Great stuff Andy.. i love the colour scheme as well.. we definitely need
more Australian pages like this on the net! I too have a few pages that
i've been working on lately, including "A guide to the 500mb maps" which
is almost finished.. I am also working on a page that will give a guide
to the AVN raw data sites, basically just showing you how to use them to
their maximum potential and also information on the 120 or so
variables..

Well strange weather here now.

This morning strong SE'ers, heavy rain, squally conditions. 12mm received.

Now it is sunny, gentle - no breeze whatsoever and beaut skies. Some cu
developing off the coast.

Actually Andrew, I've just had a chance to look at the page.

Great work! I love the animated gifs! Didi you do them yourself, if so
you are quite the whiz.

Very comprehensive coverage. Don't forget the big snow event on July 25th
last year in the Mt lofty Ranges though!

Cheers

Hi all,

Shower activity has set in with some moderate falls about. Fresh S-SE
winds. Plenty of wintry type cumulus and some cbs about, though most is now
obscured by stratus. A very loud crack of thunder a minute ago (1.11pm) and
another just now - this is to my immediate east - probably from the precip
area showing on the Grafton local radar over Byron Bay and extended west. I
can see a very dark base out that way now.

Quite tame up here today.. fully overcast and light showers around
(where i have been anyway), but some heavier stuff sitting off the
coast.. hopefully this will move onto the coast later on today.. Steve
on the gold coast was saying he has thunder down there at the moment,
and apparently their was a nice amount of lightning off the coast
late/overnight last night.. hopefully some more lightning this
evening/tonight so i can try out my new camera :)

More thunder in the last 10 mins or so and heavy rain. 20 rumbles I guess
but only 1 showing on the lightning tracker just west of Ballina (14:41
image) - must be all CCs or will show in the next update. The temp has
hovered around 13-14 all day so quite cold here as well - the forecast was
for 19 !

Nothing is photogenic - too much low cloud obscuring the cells.

Thanks Michael,

It was a lovely trip. There's something "Explorer Like" in doing such
things. Maybe its my farmer heritage or something - my parents were
farmers, not me - you know forging ahead into heavily forested country
to graze more sheep etc and then ripping the hell out of this country
with an axe and totally stuffing up the soil! Well, they didn't know
much about the trees back in those days. They were good farmers in their
own way though. Pity they were ingnorant. Sorry mum up there in the big
farm in the sky :-)

I've got the hard copy versions of the Oberon snow photos. Came today in
the mail. There's definately more detail in the hard copy versions. you
can see how dry the snow is on the latter photos (when I was higher up)
compared to the wetter snow a few hundred feet less in altitude. It's
fascinating how a few hundred feet or so can make such a difference in
the make up of the snow. In Oberon township, the snow just melted under
your feet and disappeared on the road as you drove over it (it was still
inches deep in front yards though) but higher up, outside of the town,
the snow was much crunchier. Again, as I said earlier, it didn't seem
that cold, definately didn't feel as cold as our Blackheath snow, which
is often wetter.

Apologies to all for typing the wrong address.

Anthony, I didn't need gloves. It didn't even feel cold. A number of
folk commented on how dry the snow felt and it just didn't seem cold
compared to snowy/sleety days we get here. I could've quite easily taken
my jacket off and I only had a t-shirt or something underneath that. I'm
sure its all about aclimatizing as we were in Springwood recently,
(about 300 metres in altitude) and it felt sooo hot. Our friend had the
heater on and it was 18 degrees outside!

Currently around 5.5 here at 3:37pm in Blackheath. Not quite cold enough
for white stuff yet, sadly. Light, cold rain falling.
>
Here's one for Sydneyites, (and Don White of course)

Does anyone know the exact boundaries of the dark blue toungue (the
winter graph, of course, as dark blue represents below five, I think)
over the Blue Mountains area on Don Whites weather page in the
Telegraph?

You know, there's different colors for different temps and I was just
wondering, what area/towns is that usually covering? Is Blackheath
generally the northernmost area and Oberon the west or...?

Also, what is the main reason for the colder than average pools of air
that we apparently have around and about this year?

Yes, I do keep some of Don's pages on file. :-)

Raining here now for past 2.5 hours, with moderate-heavy showers interspersed
with continuous light rain.

Has that grey "closed in" look ........starting to set in now for a while. Hmm

You'll probably get quite a bit more yet..but here in Sydney the showers
have become much lighter and the clouds (at least inland) thinner and
more broken..that cold pool is getting a move on..

Hi all

I hope the addition of my new page has not started something, I made this
page for my site, so it was an addition to my lightning page. I didnt want
this page on the ASWA site as I feel the SA/NT page on the ASWA site should
be used as a contact point for hopefull members and not overcrowded with
chase reports and the like.

If anyone can remember in detail unlisted severe weather events from
anytime in South Australia please give me the details and i will add them
to the pages. Also if anyone has any information on the Hail storm Adelaide
experieced early in June please contact me as I was away that weekend and
was unable to write up a report on it.

Also I am in the process of becoming a storm spotter for the BoM as well. I
had a great time meeting most of the employees here in SA especially in the
Severe weather section. I was also given a guided tour of the Bureau which
I thought was fantastic. Would trully like to work there aswell.

well enough from me for now...

I love your animated GIF files, very clever and rather than distracting ( as
with some pages ) these actually help you navigate the page.

Excellent work and great to see another Aussi page.

You are dead right Matthew, the anvils are going NW almost, but the base
action is not moving much off the ocean and heading mostly in a N direction
parallel to the coast. This has made this a rather tricky event to 'now
forecast' as it looks like it is going to rain heavy but the precip does not
make it inland too far. The cloud tops are only moderate height before
glaciation.

Hi all,

Further information...

Jeff Callaghan will also be presenting a talk on severe thunderstorms in
QLD, this will be an intermediate blend of synoptic/upper air situations
- it should be basic enough for all people to understand, while also
have some useful information for other more people with more "advanced"
knowledge of weather. Jeff will also talk about tropical
cyclones. Thanks to James for doing the honours and inviting him.

Jeff will be arriving at 11am.

If anyone requires transport, also please email me - I can try and
arrange transport for *some* people.

Again, please bring $2 for afternoon tea/light lunch - if people have
preferences on what they would like to eat, please contact me, as I only
buy what I think people might like.

If anyone wants a topic brought up in the agenda, again, please contact
me - don't be shy!

Another note - you don't have to be a member to attend meetings, ALL
people are welcome, and of all differing talents. If you're not exactly
sure what ASWA is all about, then please contact me, and/or attend one
of the meetings to see what we do.

Thanks for your time,

Anthony Cornelius

Amazing storm!!!! - the hail across the road looks enough like snow to make
me drool - looks like NSW & Qld are catching up on our activity from the
summer.

Great pics!!!! I'm really impressed with the speed we are getting photos of
events up on the web!!!
