Wyndham's max wasn't a record - they have had 17.9 (in 1968). The
one significant record which was broken was at Victoria River Downs -
where the max was 13 (rounded), 16 below normal and well below the
previous record of 15.6 (13 July 1968). I suspect this may be the lowest
max on record so far north in Australia, but will need to check this.
(As notably low max temps in tropical Australia go, it still has some
way to beat the 14.4 in Boulia in FEBRUARY 1949!).

For the east Kimberley and north-west NT as a whole, I'd rate this
cold event third behind 1968 and 1993 (when Halls Creek had a max of
12).

Noticed a throwaway line at the end of the news about floods in WA
and some impressive rainfall totals (92mm at Bunbury to 0900 yesterday,
56mm at Rottnest Island in the 6 hours 0900-1500 yesterday), but not
a lot of other news has percolated to the eastern states. Can one
of the WA readers fill us in on what happened?

Hi all,

I'd like to get a hold of selected site METAR data in a raw
format e.g. just text data with fields separated by space/tab/line
Some sites only have the 5/6 digit code and others the WMO alpha
code.

This will help me avoid having to parse large reports through
many scripts to clean up tabled data into a raw form, for example.

Any help much appreciated.

Yes I have photos of that as I solo chased it take away 2 days from the URL
below and look at the many photographs I have of that day

10jd01.jpg and so on jd02 jd03 .........more than 10 photos. This was
quite impressive..

Funny you mentioned about the possibility of supercell... Paul Graham
mentioned this when he saw it but it seemed to have a multicellular
structure at the time. I suppose where do you draw the line as this one
moved in a similar direction to the 14th April Supercell and the anvil
faced SE. But did this one move in a direction different to tother storms
that day????? It might have...

G'day Michael

try this site, near the bottom of the page is a link to display current
METAR's that are updated hourly. They are world wide but unfortuantely not in
any real kind of order, they will need some sorting. I hope this is what you
are looking for

Thanks Greg. It's a start for my need to access near-real-time
METAR data that I'll investigate further...In other replies,
I'll address the need for archived data individually.

Hi all,

At around midday, some nice congestus and some TCU had poked up around
the place, I checked the soundings, and many of the indicies were
thunderstorm 'friendly.' After assessing the situation, I decided to
drive to the bayside suburbs, where I had hoped that some thunderies
would form just offshore. Sure enough, they did - one had a VERY nice
beginning anvil and hard updraft, however by the time I could try and
get in a clear position, cloud had blocked my view. This cell quickly
weakened though, but lasted 1.5hrs. Two other Cb's also formed
offshore...and by 3pm, some large Cu (but wintery looking) was building
on the border ranges...I had to go to the shops for a while, but when I
came out, there were 3 visible Cb's, however 2 collapsed within 10mins.

There were also another 2 Cb's offshore.

All up, 8 Cb's - most very low, with the highest only reacing 30,000
feet. However, I was desperate!

I believe the river in Bussleton was very close to bursting its banks, they
didn't send in an ob at 9am this morning, but it wouldn't suprise me if
they had over 100mm in the 24 hour period.

It started to rain here in Perth from about 11am, and it only stopped for
brief periods for the rest of the day, Perth City got 31mm, Perth Airport
28mm, better totals around the suburbs though with Jandakot receiving 48mm,
and Swanbourne 57mm.

There was some nice development down off the Gold Coast this morning, I got a
few snaps and put them on the Daily Pics section of my website

http://greenfield.fortunecity.com/fatcat/440/todayspic/

On the drive home there were TCu popping up all over the place and I was
thinking that it was starting to look interesting :-) However by the time I
got back to Bris, around 2.30, it wasn't looking quite as good.

Hi Michael

Unfortunately, I think that what you want is only available from the
Bureau at $100/year. The METARs from NWS that Greg mentioned are fine
as far as they go, but are only available for capital cities and at
most a dozen other sites in Australia.

I would very much like to be able to make data like this available at
a lower cost to ASWA members and other interested parties in a variety
of formats for different purposes. For example, appropriate
reformatted data can be read into programs like Tim Vasquez's Digital
Atmosphere to produce a range of charts on your own computer, from
hourly synoptic analyses to quite complex upper air anals, much
earlier than similar information becomes available elsewhere. It is
possible, for example, to download, ingest and process data so that
you have a detailed hourly synoptic chart by about 20 past the hour --
invaluable for fast-moving situations.

Unfortunately, the Bureau is still sorting out its secondary
distribution policies, and so the cost and conditions on which I could
make data like this available are still up in the air. I'll let the
list know when anything happens in this area, as it will have a major
impact on availability of things like radar and satpix, as well as
observational data.

The following may be helpful.

Truly "raw" metars are in metar code, and are sent by airport wx
stations and AWS's directly to the Melbourne Bureau computers. A
system quaintly titled the "Computer Message Switching System", or
CMSS, is used to disseminate this and all other raw data to Bureau
RFCs and some private individuals. This is the raw data feed that I
get, and the noteworthy synops and metar/specis on my webpage are
drawn from this, after decoding.

The bureau then does some basic processing and reformatting of this
data into two products, each available at $100 a year -- the web site
observations pages, which used to be available using id/password
"test"/"test", and which are pretty useless for serious purposes
because of their format, the indiscriminate mixing of metars and
synops, and the fact they're only available in real time -- i.e. no
archive at all. The second product is available from the bureau's ftp
site, and is formatted in standard comma-delimited files. Files are
prepared every 15 minutes at +8, 23, 38 and 53 minutes from the hour,
and there's a 24-hour rotating archive.

Here's a sample metar header and report:

ID_num, ID_name[6], Date, Time, Lat, Lon, Wdir, Wspd, T_DB, DP, QNH,
RF9am, RF10m, Vis, Wx[80]
 94120, "YPDN ", 19990705, 0130, -12.42, 130.88, 100, 10.0, 27.4,
11.3, 1015.4, 0.0, 0.0, -9999, " "

And here's a sample synop header and report:

WMO_id, Name[31], Abbr[6], Date, Time, Lat, Lon, Stn_typ, Stn_ht_m,
Total_cld, Wdir, Wspd_mps, Vis_m, Wx[9], Pw1, Pw2, Msl_P, Stn_P,
P_tend_typ, P_tend_val, Cor_P_tend, T_DB, DP, Low_cld_amt,
Low_cld_typ[4], Cld_base_m, Cld_dir[4], Mid_cld_typ[4], Hi_cld_typ[4],
Rf_int_h6, Rainfall6, Rf_int_h4, Rainfall4, Sea_state[5],
Swl_state[9], Swl_dir[4], Max_T, Min_T, Min_grnd_T
 94578, "BRISBANE AERO ", "YBBN ", 19990704, 2300, -27.39,
153.12, 1, 5, 7, 240, 02.6, 15000, "16RIA<5k", 2, 2, 1027.9, 1027.3,
2, +1.2, -0.1, 15.1, 13.5, 7, "Sc ", 600, "SE ", " ", " ",
24, 1.0, -9999, -9999.0, " ", " ", " ", 20.0, 12.0,
9.0

Unfortunately, some useful detail is lost in the present
implementation of this product. E.g. wind gust speed is not included
with metars, though it is sent with every observation, and cloud type
in the synops is reduced from the standard 27 WMO varieties to "Sc",
"Cu", "Cb", etc, which misses useful observations of castellanus, etc.
However, I've taken these matters up with Rodney Davidson who runs
this show in Melbourne, and he's indicated that the changes can be
made in a few months.

In the meantime, if you have a spare $100 and don't mind getting
online for about 10 minutes each day, I think this would be your best
option.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Yeah there was some nice Cb around the place today.. most of them were
anvilless (spelling?) bar one which developed around the Bribie Island
area around 1:30.. and for a short time was quite healthy with a
reasonably thick anvil and fairly hard fresh updrafts on the western
side.. unfortunately it didn't last long, and within 10-15 mins the
anvil became very weak and fiborous.. this was the first 'summer' type
Cb i have seen for months, with all the other Cb's i saw very much soft
winter stuff.. mind you i was stuck inside for most of the day.. I did
however get some pictures of some nice Anvilless Cb to the W and SW just
on sunset..
