After checking the database, the maximum of 13 at Victoria River
Downs (16.4 S) appears to be the lowest ever so far north in
Australia. This is particularly impressive given the site's low
altitude (82m).

While it's uncheckable, I'd be interested to know if there have been
lower maxima so close to the Equator at or near sea level elsewhere
in the world. I'd guess that if it's happened it would be on the
South American coast - Lima (12 S) has an August mean maximum of 19 C,
so it would seem an obvious candidate, but I suspect the interdiurnal
variability of temperature is very low there.

Hi all

A quick question regarding two Queensland Hailstorms. I am doing some
research and can not confirm the occurrence of two Hailstorm in Brisbane,
one on the 4/11/94 and the other on the 6/11/95.

Anyone who has information regarding these events, or even the confirmation
of their occurrence it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Ben,

The following information should interest you, this came from James
Chambers' SE QLD storm site, of which most of the information has come
from the Bureau of Meteorology and newspaper reports.

November 4, 1994 E Qld: A supercell thunderstorm developed explosively
on the eastern Border Ranges in the early afternoon
before moving over the northern parts of the Gold Coast. In suburbs such
as Oxenford, Helensvale and Coomera hail up to 6cm in
diameter smashed skylights and dented cars. In the parking lot at
Movieworld, more than 50% of the cars suffered hail damage, from
a few dents to smashed windscreens. Two people died in car accidents
during the dangerous conditions. Cloudtops 14.5km. Another
supercell with cloudtops to 17km moved through Kin Kin near Gympie
reportedly with a tornado also, and large hail.

November 3-8, 1995 SE Qld: Many severe thunderstorms with damaging hail
especially moved through SE Qld. Many areas had
severe storms 4 days in a row. On the 3rd, a severe hailstorm destroyed
crops at Brookstead, on the Darling Downs. The peak of the
severe storm activity was the early-mid a'noon on the 6th. Many severe
storms tracked through SEQ including a supercell at
Bellbowrie which dumped 8cm+ hail destroying tiled roofs and smashing
car winscreens. The last storm of the sequence hit areas
from Nambour north, carpeting towns with large amounts of hail up to
golf ball size.

http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jamestorm/bristorm/reports/nov3_95.html <--
for a report on the last event.

If you haven't done so already, I strongly suggest you go through his

Hope this helps,

Hi Ben...

Just go to http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jamestorm/bristorm/events/89to95.html
They're my notable thunderstorm summaries between 1989 and 1995.
There was not a hailstorm occurrence on 4/11/94 in Brisbane, even though
its mentioned in the Qld Severe Thunderstorms Database. There was however a
destructive supercell in the Coomera/Helensvale areas on the northern Gold
Coast which caused lots of hail damage to cars and skylights. The
Movieworld carpark had many damaged cars.
The 6/11/95 supercell dropped giant hail at Belbowrie, NW Brisbane. For
more info, go to my report as part of severe thunderstorms between 3/11/95
and 8/11/95:
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jamestorm/bristorm/reports/nov3_95.html

Yesterday and again today there were some fairly impressive cumulonimbus
along the coast, mostly north of Byron Bay. Fairly isolated but persisting
all day with nice anvils, clouds tops probably under 30,000 feet.
Scattered moderate cumulus with a few thin congestus elsewhere, with a
couple of turkey towers nearby. Max temps close to 21 today and light
onshore winds.

Hi All,

Looking at the aviation forecast for Area 50 (in South Australia) and found
this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
AREA50
09:03 UTC, 06/07/1999
AREA FORECAST 060930 TO 062300 AREA 50

OVERVIEW:
FINE APART FROM PATCHES OF VIRGA [RAIN NOT REACHING THE GROUND] FROM

I think that a qualified pilot would know what virga is somehow.
Definition probably not required but as this page can be viewed by the
general public maybe it was an explanation for those of us who didn't know.

I haven't posted to the list for a while - not for any particular reason
though. I've just been sitting back in the wings to see if Melbourne's
weather can get any more boring.

BTW - Bells Beach was 3-4ft this morning rising to 4-6ft with the incoming
tide and offshore (sort of). Had a great surf and then locked my keys in
the car!!!

What's easiest way to unsubscribe from the weather

Sorry for the off-topic.

Hi Anthony,

I noted an isolated rumble from a moderate sized, very dark base, Cu which
was in the Mt. Crosby vicinity shortly after 12:00 noon Monday. No precip.
Noted also a small single cell with weak anvil over Moreton Bay at 3:00pm
Tuesday.

John.

Hi all,

At around midday, some nice congestus and some TCU had poked up around
the place, I checked the soundings, and many of the indicies were
thunderstorm 'friendly.' After assessing the situation, I decided to
drive to the bayside suburbs, where I had hoped that some thunderies
would form just offshore. Sure enough, they did - one had a VERY nice
beginning anvil and hard updraft, however by the time I could try and
get in a clear position, cloud had blocked my view. This cell quickly
weakened though, but lasted 1.5hrs. Two other Cb's also formed
offshore...and by 3pm, some large Cu (but wintery looking) was building
on the border ranges...I had to go to the shops for a while, but when I
came out, there were 3 visible Cb's, however 2 collapsed within 10mins.

There were also another 2 Cb's offshore.

All up, 8 Cb's - most very low, with the highest only reacing 30,000
feet. However, I was desperate!

Anthony from Brisbane
