The more things change, the more they stay the same: one of the reports states 'Hundreds of householders fear there will be great difficulty in obtaining labour, tiles and window glass to make repairs' (at least then they had the excuse that the war had only finished relatively recently). Compared with 1999, there seem to have been many more injuries - not surprising given that it was at 2.30 on New Year's afternoon and many people were caught in the open at locations such as beaches and Randwick racecourse - but less property damage. (In particular, many cars had fabric tops which would be far cheaper to repair or replace than a metal top would be). The quoted million-pound figure for damage (almost certainly an under-estimate) would equate to about $45 million in 1999 dollars. The ASWA members in Sydney are working in close association with the Weatherwatch group and had a good showing at the last meeting on the Sydney Hailstorm. Now here is your chance to meet Laurier Williams on the list. (Sorry Laurier) AUSTRALIAN METEOROLOGICAL AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SOCIETY A.M.0.S. SYDNEY CENTRE WEATHERWATCH GROUP NEWSLETTER No.997 JULY 1999 The Next Meeting of the A.M.0.S. Weatherwatch Group will be held on WEDNESDAY 28TH of JULY 1999 at 730pm(19:30) in Room 143 of Building E5A at Macquarie University. Building E5A is on the left of Eastern Road, near carpark E3 or E4. The Subject is "Weather and Snowfalls in the Mountains" and we have invited Mr. Laurier Williams to introduce the subject and begin the discussion. This will be an informal meeting with continuous refreshments, and members records, particularly of snow, low temperatures, or winter storms, are to be encouraged. The Last Meeting of the Weatherwatch Group was held on 26th may, and our speaker was Mr. Rob. Webb from the Severe Weather Section of the Bureau of Meteorology. Rob gave us a very comprehensive study of thunderstorms, and the causes of the various 'severe weather' which can be associated with them, and the radar imaging in use. Rob concluded by answering a barrage of questions from the large, enthusiastic audience, and continued the discussion afterwards during the serving of the refreshments. The A.M.0.S. Scientific Meeting on 30th June at the Bureau featured Mr. Michael Johnson from the E.P.A. speaking on Meteorological Measurement to support Air Quality Research particularly in the Western Sydney Basin, Badgery's Creek. Future Weatherwatch Meetings will be held on September 29 and November 24 and maybe December and members are welcome to bring their observations and records of Thunderstorms and plans for Storm Spotting, Storm Chasing, and Analysis of Results. If you want to know more about Weatherwatch, Meetings, or the interests of the Group, Please Phone one of the following on the Committee : Roger Nurse, Convenor, (02) 9449.1473 Alan Williams, Committee, (02) 9488.9975 Paul Graham, Committee, (02) 9888.2527 visitors are very welcome, but please remember parking in the University Grounds requires a permit, or the paying of money to a nearby parking meter (pay and display) $1.00 per hour (max $4.00 up to midnight). The meter displays the allotted time on its screen as you pay, and issues a ticket which clearly shows the expiry time and the date. The ticket must show clearly inside your windscreen on the drivers side. Finally, we look forward to seeing you at the Weatherwatch Meeting on Wednesday 28th July. Please bring your ideas to this meeting for future Weatherwatch Meetings, especially for 29th September, and 24th November 1999. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jimmy Deguara Vice President ASWA from Schofields, Sydney e-mail: jimmyd at ozemail.com.au homepage with Michael Bath Australian Severe Weather Association home information page http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 013 From: "McDonald" [mcdonald at one.net.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: Re: aus-wx: MT BULLER WIND Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 22:34:15 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Internet Mail 4.70.1161 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Mark, Generally the trees/buildings in the alps are more used to winds of this speed when compared to trees/buildings down here. Although - last August I went to Mt Baw Baw for a weekend and when we got there on the friday night a gale warning was current and by the next morning 1 in every 3 trees had been snapped off at half trunk level. I'm talking serious trees here. The largest was about 1ft in diameter. I guess the wind would've got to about 130km/h that night - we tried to walk in it but found it almost impossible.
