They are awesome shots you took of the lunar eclipse. Where I am, in far southern Brisbane we had continual middle/low level cloud with drizzle so it was a tad difficult to get a good glimpse of it. I got the video out but because of the cloud and lack of tripod the view wasn't so good. In October (?) 1997 we had a full lunar eclipse at around 3-4am which I stayed up all night for and got some great shots with the camcorder (and tripod!). Regards James Chambers www.ozemail.com.au/~jamestorm/bristorm.html p.s. Les Joachim Schug wrote: Hi there is no official rainfall station in this specific valley. Nearby Interlaken (4-5 km away) reported just about 4 mm of rain, Adelboden (WMO code 06735) had about 23 mm. According to the registrations of this Swiss automatic station it was a "normal" summer thunderstom, concerning flash- and precipitation rate and gusts. Radar pictures of this event showed very small, localized cells with more preciptation. Estimations of the ETH Zurich gave up to 40 mm in the Saxeten valley within 1 hour (which is not extraordinary); see here: http://www.radar.ethz.ch/archiv_990727.html For all this water fallen in this valley is channeled in a thin outflow (canyon) - perhaps enhanced by some other factors (mudslide, barrage by rests of the previous severe avalanche-winter in february!) - caused this tragedy! By the way: In July 1987 a heavy thunderstorm in the same valley caused heavy to severe flooding downstream! There have been approximately 26mm in the last 50 days. This is also short of record territory for winter. However, with little or no rain likely in the next week (perhaps longer if the EC - which has the Bight high parked on top of Tasmania on day 7 with a central pressure of 1041 - is to be believed), I had a look at 60-day spells. There are two instances of < 30mm in a 60-day period in winter in Melbourne: 25.2mm 2 June-30 July 1979, and 28.4mm 23 June - 21 August 1902. (In each case 60-day periods a few days earlier or later than these dates were also under 30, as one would expect). The 1979 dry spell broke down from early August onwards, although it was the 27th before more than 10mm was received in a day (and, as anyone who saw the footage of the 1979 Grand Final on Thursday night will know, late September was quite wet). We're about 60mm below average for the year so far - not a spectacular deficit, but on top of the accumulated deficits since October 1996 there is starting to be some concern about water storages, especially in western Victoria.
