Hey James, Everyone..

I actually got some pictures of some very healthy congestus around the
Sunshine Coast/North Moretone Island area around 10:30 yesterday
morning.. and also the offshore storms James was talking about.. i
thought they were the best Cb's i've seen for months as well.. the
Congestus to our N and NE (responsible for the waterspout) was still
going when i was driving home from work at 5:30pm last night..

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine only just got a roll of film developed that had shots of the
Dec 16 1999 storm in Brisbane (lazy buggar)! It was great of him to lend the
photos for me to post. I first arrived in Brisbane on Dec 22 dang it all!!

Cheers!

Thanks very much for this Marty!!! You never know what pictures you can
find from friends.

Some of the car hoods on those pictures are absolutely riddled with
dents. I know that some people are still waiting for their cars to get
repaired! I think damage was around $30-40million dollars (esimated)
but I think the actual figure is much higher than that.

For those who don't know about this storm, it gave parts of the city
10cm hail (a friend of James Chambers' actually measured it) and from
what I can recall, she said "the smaller hail was only golf ball size,
most of it was around 5-7cm, and the larger stones were up to 10cm" -
well, I've never even seen golfball hail yet!!

The storm occurred on the left hand side of another severe storm that
gave 2cm hail in areas of the eastern suburbs of Brisbane, at first
glance it appears to have split, but when you look at the radar loop,
you can tell it was a different storm. I know that I was talking to a
friend in Garden City, and they reported hail around 2cm...it then ended
with golfball hail at Redcliffe before moving out to sea. The BoM said
this was a "pulse severe storm" - it had a severe hail path of around
35km, but I don't know if there was definate rotation in the storm or
not.

This all pales into insignificance compared to the Sydney April 14 storm
though!

Howdy all. Last night a great lightning show for hours as the storms off the
Coast continued to develop all night. This morning sees 7 or 8 cells again, with
another impressive one off the coast between Forster & Newcastle.

One thing of note is the apparent severity of the storms. All have had
overshooting tops & impressive backbuilding BUT an apparent lack of low level
instability with the bases of the storms being quite high. As Paul G has said
there must be an enormous amount of mid - high level instability at the moment,
but little in lower levels. Another point is the direction of anvil movement -
almost due west.

I hope that the SE airstream picks up so these beauties move onshore.

Paul at Port Macquarie.

Dec 16 1999?. That's an interesting hobby - travelling into to the future
to view storms. BTW, any interesting weather events coming in the new
millenium?.

It's clutching at straws, but then we've had to do it a lot this
winter - GASP day 8 and the ECMWF day 7 both look as if they
suggest a vaguely promising build-up to a possible SE Australian
cold outbreak next Friday/Saturday. As this is the first thing that's
even looked vaguely like one since early June, it's time to start
getting ready...

The models are doing different things with the low this weekend -
GASP kills it off before it gets to Victoria (probably with some
rain on the northern slopes but little or none in Melbourne), but
the EC takes the low right across Victoria. UKMO is somewhere in the
middle.

Lots of low readings in NSW and northern Victoria (less so in SA)
again this morning, but only in northern NSW was it the coldest of
the week (-7 at Woolbrook). Goulburn Airport had -10.1 on Tuesday
morning - the first -10 I can recall seeing outside the alpine
area since 1994, although I'll have to double-check this (I do know
there were many near-misses in 1997, with Glen Innes AWS -9.something
on numerous occasions). Could make for an interesting introduction
to the country for visitors if the second Sydney airport ends up
getting built there...

(A previous Goulburn site - not sure which one, there have been quite
a few - recorded -13.9 in July 1971, on the same day as Canberra got its
-10).

ASWA member Halden Boyd from Evans Head in N NSW has shown me this great
site for current aviation weather observations which is well worth checking.

This info from Halden (who is a pilot and owns a plane):

Hi every1,

For those that don't get USAToday, check this forecast...

"Expert: Potent hurricane season coming
One of the nation's top experts on hurricanes forecasts a wicked season with
three or four dangerous ones by November, so don't be lulled by the lack of
storms so far. "This will be a very active hurricane year," says William
Gray, of Colorado State University. Gray's closely watched forecast, to be
updated Friday, won't stray far from his June prediction of 14 named storms
including nine hurricanes."

This looks like a scene out of a movie.

This bloke is actually worried.

I would rather not reply.

Ill have a go!!!!! Not that im one for controversy now! ehheheh, anyway
firstly the planets dont line up exactly and they never ever ever will, the
9/9/99 is another date they are tossing around. Plus even if they did line
up the gravatation effect is only equivelent to that of a 747 flying at
30000ft, so unfortunatley no tsumais or 300kph winds. However it that guy
wants to give me some of that gear hes on id love to give it a go!!! sounds
like loose gear!!!!!!!! hehehehe

Hmmmmm, very interesting.........I've heard around the traps that a tsunami
will hit the East Coast of Aus sometime in the 3rd quarter of next
year.........another thing.......when the planets lined up xxx years ago,
the weather didn't go mad etc, etc, etc
Maybe a frontal labotamy wouldn't go astray.........
See Ya's
