Hi Ben,

It was pretty windy in Canberra yesterday afternoon.
Canberra is sheltered from the west by the Brindabellas
so I have no doubt that a location as exposed as Mt
Crackenback would have recorded some impressive winds.

Recorded just over 30mm in Higgins in the 24 hours to
9.00am today Monday. That's one and a half times what we
received through ALL of July.

Showers still falling although tending to clear. Some
good white patches visible on the Brindabellas so I guess
there were some good snow falls in the Snowy Mtns overnight
once the pre-frontal rain turned to snow.

I think you can regard them as legit. If you look at the sequences of
AWS obs in the noteworthy obs links on my site, you'll see that
Crackenback and all the Victorian alpine stations were reporting
sustained winds of 35 to 45 knots yesterday, with gusts into the 50s.
If the gusts are within about 30% of the sustained winds and there's a
consistent string of such obs, I think they're likely to be correct.

I've been interested in the very occasional *very* high sustained and
gust speeds reported from Mt Hotham and Crackenback since the AWS's
were installed. Every now and again, in conditions where high winds
seem plausible, both stations have reported gusts of over 100 *knots*.

Hi Ben (& other aus-wx lovers:-),

That gust is not unusual from that site or in any lofty area of
the Snowy Mountains. There is more likely to be registrations below
the proper speeds because of icing. Watch for this factor when the
snows come in, particularly while freezing mists engulf the top of
the mountain. I've been up there in winds near this speed which at
one stage blew me (and a few others) back to Mt. Crackenback from
around Lake Albina 7km to the NNW. I was using touring skis and the
wind literally blew me up the hills all the way without hardly a
stride or pole to help me along. Great fun, but extremely dangerous
because of lousy visability, much ice and blasting bits of ice
that tore away at any exposed skin. Almost impossible to stop
unless one sort some shelter in the lee side of a hill or large
rock. In the full blast of this wind, it was very difficult to
maintain your balance which was only possible by leaning headlong
into the wind while bracing skis in a herringbone position. To get
moving, it was a delicate operation to turn by almost jumping a
180 degree turn. If you stayed up, your body acted like a sail.
The other technique was to lie face down-wind on your back or
tummy (usually after a fall:-), then slowly get up to a crouch
while gaining speed, then stand up for the full sail effect.
It took us only 25 mins to cover the 7km including a couple
of falls and rest stops! I would say out top skiing speed was
around 60kph which on touring skis represents a form of insanity.

The US and Aussie global models are predicting a major cold outbreak
across southern Australia, starting with WA on Wed/Thurs, moving to
the east and intensifying over NSW/Vic/Tas on Saturday. There are some
variations in intensity and timing, with NOGAPS the least spectacular,
but both GASP and the MRF have thicknesses below 530 and 850 temps
down around minus 5 well up into NSW on Saturday. More significant is
the MRF prediction of a strong southerly jet at 300hPa to the west of
Tassie on Saturday -- all good polar outbreaks have depth, and this
feature bodes well for a snowy weekend. GASP has been quite consistent
from run to run for the past 3 or 4 runs, too

At last, something to look forward to!

That figures...Just when I'm going to Bullocks Flat with no chains
for the first time since 1979. I used to own a car (Alfa) with a
lim-slip-diff that, with chains, could plough through about 30cm
of snow on the road. Now I have one of these Holden things (leased
through work) with no chains so "Murphy" says I will get caught
out:-) Now if I buy a set of chains, this cold outbreak will
disappear. Right? Seriously, I hope so...bring on on snow!...I'll
manage whatever happens:-)

some drifts that blocked the lodge entrance.

I can only assume that the software for the AWS is intelligent enough
to report rain as the present weather if more than x mm precipitation
has occurred in the last y hours, but not intelligent enough to check
whether the temperature is below freezing.

I'll follow this up within the Bureau - it's an obvious flaw in the
software (and one I've seen before at other stations, so it's not
unique to Crackenback).

Hi All

AWS (Automatic Weather Stations) cannot distinguish between Snow and Rain.
All they know is that water has entered the rain gauge. The Thredbo AWS
probably has a heater to melt the snow an allow it to be measured.

The July pressure anomalies map has come through (go to the climate
section of the Bureau web site and look under 'Global Maps'). Not as
dramatic as I expected - largest positive anomalies in the Australian
region are around 5 hPa, over and south of eastern Victoria. Negative
anomalies over (and west of) south-west WA.

Hi all,

Fizzer ? - depends on where you sit I guess. The Coral Sea had a pretty
active season I'd say, and most of them, save for Rona, went the other way.
I have a single image from NASA GMS5 site of three declared cyclones in a
line on a south-east track (21/01/99, 23:32 UTC). SUI summary from Gary
Padgett has 21 systems, 14 named, in the Aus. area between 90 and 160 E
for the season. As you say John, some big ones went sou-west.

The early warnings of an active 98/99 cyclone season, justified as they may
be, had a negative impact on our tourist season however - probably did more
economic damage than if we had got the blows.

AND, with the models predicting a return to La Nina conditions later this
year, plus current support from SOI data (SOI positive and rising), both the
Gulf of Mexico and Qld Coast could be heading for similar conditions to last
year's for the cyclone season - will we be so lucky (?) again??

I hope those over there will have more luck.

Whilst rearranging the Burea's significant weather statement for
the next AMOS Bulletin I noticed an entry for June 21: 'On the 21st
at Mourbra (Metropolitan) 2cm hail was reported'.

I've never heard of Mourbra (and it turned up a blank in a postcode
search) and suspect this is meant to be Maroubra. Can someone confirm?

Blair....
Yes... it was Maroubra - early morning coastal thunderstorms gave 20 mm
at Little Bay AWS (rain only) in an hour. small hail was reported along
the region, with drifts to 10 cms but size was small...
and it was on early morning of 22nd, not 21st !

Hello everyone,

Just a reminder to all Sydney residents, that there will be a video night at
my house this Friday (13th ohh scary).
Come for a night of new documentries( and lots of older ones), pizza,
and generally a friendly chat.
Turn up from 4pm onwards. Bring photos, videos, books, mags, and anything
else of interest.

My address is
12 Taringha St
Blaxland 2774
ph: 0247 396763
My house is one street off the Great Western Hwy, so its pretty easy to get
to. If you are unsure how far it is away from everything, it is apporx
30minutes from the start of the M4 freeway near parramatta rd. For further
questions email me.

interesting up there, well actually a bit higher I suppose.

Ok, my physics is incredibly lacking as you are about to find
out.......question:

You are in a car with an anemometer mounted on the roof. You are travelling
west at 50kmh.

What is the corrected wind speed in the following situations?
a) the wind is blowing from the west at 50kmh
b) the wind is blowing from the east at 50kmh
c) the wind is blowing from the north at 50kmh

Thanks (very humbly)

All AWS in their SYNOP reports give 21 as code for present wx and 44
for past wx if there's been precip at relevant times. 21 = rain in
past hour. 4 for past wx = fog! I never could work that out...

Mildest morning in a few weeks, or so it felt on the pushbike this morning.
However there was snow clouds to the west, albeit at moderate altitude, so
real snow line was perhaps well over 1200m.

This afternoon some Cb to the east and a nice wintery looking cell to the
south.

I did not do high school physics, so I can only guess it may be best to plot

Not sure if this is correct but, only (a) got me..

Same applies if you are in an Aircraft flying due north at 50km/h:
you have a crosswind of 50km/h you are actually flying around 70km/h or you
travel 70km in one hour.
you have a tail wind of 50km/h you are actually flying at 100km/h or 100km
in one hour
you have a head wind of 50km/h you are actually flying at 0km/h relative to
the ground.

This is how I came up with the answers, but a practical test would be
interesting, but where would I find a very constant wind of 50km/h besides
a wind tunnel that is over a couple of Km's long :)

good question though

Andrew
Swap (a) and (b) around and you'd be closer.

Keith,

There is a really great global satellite animation at:
http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/data/comp/cmoll.mpg

Although a large file (1.8mb), you get a weeks
worth of animation across the whole globe. Very
good for identifying broad-scale circulation
patterns and systems like typhoons in Asia that
had little coverage in Aust but resulted in
large numbers of deaths and property damage for
those affected.

It picks up the South African cold outbreak as
a small low that soon lost its identity. The
broader scale wave in which it was located in
all probability would have moved from SA to
Aust in a much shorter time - check out the
EC animation at
http://www.ecmwf.int/html/charts/charts_css.html
to see the circulation of these larger scale
loops around the two hemispheres.

Hope that helps,

Patrick

Excellent Steve,

Animations really help in developing my understanding
of the evolution of weather systems.

Great to see the development and maturing of the
low which gave us a reasonable fall of rain in
SE Aust and Canberra the last couple of days.

Hi Jimmy here,

If you thought you could get rid of me then think again.

Why was I offline? Well I tried to run a refreshed windows 95 on my
computer and yes I couldn't get back on the internet.... So don't refresh
your computer by running win 95 over it unless it is absolutely essential.

Well after about 6 hours trial and error (yes I have patience), I rang the
help desk. They couldn't do anything so they put the special staff on to
try and help...

Well the special staff came on and was quite friendly and patient. His
response "I know what your problem is?" (My mind said, gee i must be stupid
or something)

Well 2 hours on the phone later, he told me to freshly re install win 95
which I did. He did not ring back. And no it didn't work. I still had the
same problem.

So what I did was totally delete windows directory!!! And reinstall win
95!!! No it didn't work straight away and no I don't know what really did
it but I have now managed to get back on and annoy the list again!!!

The moral of the story, fix up your own problems!!!

Jimmy Deguara

Ahhh, Microsoft! Don't get me started!

Weather relation: Did you know - the largest ever hailstone in the world fell on
14 April 1986, In Bangladesh, weighing 1kg (2.25 pounds). The hailstorm killed
ninety-two people at Gopalganj!
