Overnight the temperature got down to 4.2c at the moment (11.15am) it is 9.5c, it has remained fine so far this morning but there are some showers to the south of Melbourne on the radar and a patch of cloud moving in from the SW showing up on the latest sat pic. I would say we will get some showers and possible small hail this afternoon. So far snowfalls in the Victorian high country have been light 5 to 10cms at most of the major resorts just 1cm at Donna Buang and 3cm at Baw Baw, but there should be some more snow later this afternoon as the coldest air moves in hopefully the more southern resorts Baw Baw and Lake Mountain may pick up 10 to 15cms of fresh snow by this time tomorrow morning. Long term trend, all the charts have a high moving across Victoria on Monday and moving into the Tasman Sea on Tuesday and Wednesday, mild northerly winds look set to push the temperature up towards 18 or 19c by Wednesday. Dane =20 Doesn't look like much activity at the moment, although the airmass remains quite chilly (11.4 in Melbourne City). There was a lightning strike in the southern CBD at 6.10 last night (as I was going into the station), and hail was falling at Clifton Hill at 6.20. From what I saw it looks like this was the northern tip of the band of showers - this is borne out by the rainfall figures (5-10mm in the southeastern suburbs, but only 1mm in the city). With little or no rain likely now until late next week, August looks like it will start to run well below average again (17.6mm so far). About 4/8 cover, current temp is 11. Snow can be seen falling from the Cu reaching to about 1,500-1,600m before melting. I am looking forward to the next front now just SW of Vic - the satellite animations show the air behind this has come from a long way south. I really hope this is not the high point of Winter 99. I was driving north up one of the side streets at Swinburne Uni. in Hawthorn last night just after 6PM & there was a great flash of light behind me that reflected in all my mirrors & lit up the inside of the car. At the same time my radio started breaking up ( Triple J ) & it took about 5 minutes or so for them to stay on air & resume 'normal' transmission. I didn't hear any thunder ( maybe I had the radio up too loud......). I saw another really nice CC to the south of Canterbury Rd while I was driving home towards the Dandenongs about 15 minutes later. I did manage to get a couple of photos at Hawthorn before sunset & 'all' the action started ( while I was indoors, Doh!). Started raining at Boronia at about 18:50 last night - no hail, only heavy rain on and off for about 30 minutes and I couldn't see any more lightning. Currently in Boronia, it seems to be getting colder ............but it's sunny at the moment. As the tram passed over the Yarra at Kew, I noticed a very photogenic gust front to the SW and a nice lowering where the flanking line met the active cell. I bolted from the tram at Kew junction and raced to my parents' place only to find that Dad had taken BOTH cameras to work with him!! I consoled myself with just watching it from the street outside and noticed one flash of lightning. A sudden onset of heavy rain began while we were having dinner but it tapered off after 15-20 minutes. Soon after the rain tapered off, I noticed another bright flash of lightning to the west. So I've learned my lesson. Now I will take my camera with me, regardless of how unpromising the day might be in the morning. Around 5pm one cell in my estimate may have had its rear just over land around Ulladulla or further south. Since nightfall there has been sporadic lightning flashes, estimate around 150 -200km SE. Very mild afternoon actually, was 15C at 5pm, yet clouds to west were showing as ice above 1200-1400m. Should be very interesting tomorrow. Scattered showers with local yellow patches have developed further north. That secondary cold front is going to have a bit of a kick in it, I think.. No lightning that I've seen though. No wind yet either after a windy but warm (24degrees) arvo. Repton's rain total for July -391mm, 2055mm for year so far, but only 1mm plus tonight's, in August. People up here are hoping for snow at Ebor (1500m). Is there enough moisture behind the front to please the snow seekers?
