The rain stopped at about 9:30ish and I got home from work at 11:00pm and in bed by 11:30. I was woken up by heavy rain which promptly turned to hail at about 2:30am so i ran outside (brrrrr) and had a quick look - tiny rice grain hail - probably not enough to warrant a trip outside in my boxershorts at 2:30am. Anyway - I was woken by my sister this morning as she was whinging about the fact that she had to get up early. No more than five minutes later I heard it. The sound. Tink. Tink. Tinktink. Then the little roar. Louder. Louder. Then Whhoooooshhhhhh. HAIL HAIL HAIL. I have never got out of bed on a saturday morning so quickly. Straight to the lounge room window to see hail absolutely pissing down. WOOOOOHHHHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! It was only small (pea sze - with the biggest about 1cm) but there was a fair bit in the 2-3 mins that it lasted. I could see another curtain of it coming across the shallow valley and then i could hear it again. Next thing I know the street light goes out and there is a huge FLASH!!! and then CRACK!!!!. Prolly about 600m away. I jumped up and down and ran around the house screaming (SDS does this to a person). Anyway - after the rain stopped i went for a look around. Not all that much to see but I've been hanging out for these proper winter Cb's to kick in. I rang the BoM to let them know about the hail and thunder and the guy was not surprised about the hail but very surprised about the thunder. Another more distant thunder was heard just after that phone call and that was the end. I went outside and watched the line disappear over to the N. What a lovely way to wake up of a morning. Thanks to the waether god (feel free to do it again). One of the things I noticed was that the upper levels have become very unstable in advance with 500temps at Wagga this morning nearly -30c, while at Sydney Airport this afternoon they were nearing -25c! Total Totals for Williamtown this morning was 52 which gives some indication of the instability. I also observed spetacular lightning off the coast this evening. Also, the MRF model shows a high RH forecast for tomorrow at the 850Mb level, so we may indeed see some more thunderstorm activity. The best we've had is a few sleet showers. Min over night was 1C, when I did the obs at 9 it was 3C with WB at 2C, westerly winds at about 12 knots and gusty. Seems a little too warm and a little too dry here at the moment as is usual with westerlys. I expect Crookwell and the like would have had a bit more action over night. We have had showers with the occasional bit of sleet over the last 2 hours -easing up a bit now which has allowed the temp to increase from the 3 - 5 that it was oscillating around for much of the morning. I was at Mt Ainslie (812m alt overlooking the City Centre) around 11.00am where the sleet alternated with more consistent but very wet snow - although not settling. Brindabellas ranges were well and truly obscured by cloud but should be quite spectacular tomorrow. 8/8 cloud cover of Cu, Cb and Sc. Most of the Cb and even the dreaded Sc is glaciated. Very light winds are tending around from S to SSE/SE. Radar suggests the surface low is somewhere just to the SW of Jervis Bay. The news has just reported wide-spread snow falls across SE NSW with Perisher reporting 40cm overnight. But not settling much at all. Roads are clear, and the usual local traffic. Might be more substantial snow on Canobolas, as it is about 1500 ft higher than the valley here. I drove into Orange this morning, and there was a little snow there, but the rain mostly washed it away. Can't see the top of the mountain (Canobolas) as the cloud base is down to about 3500 ft. Quite cold, about +3C, and probably won't go much higher today. Winds were strong and gusty from W/SW earlier, but now have moderated to 15/20 knots. The wind and lower cloud movement has swung SW during the afternoon, with some more purposeful looking large Cu drifting off the high country around Oberon -- we've had several showers of 2 to 5mm size sago snow, though the temp at 15.00 was still 4.2 in my screen (3.5 at Mt Boyce). Hourly satpic animation shows a good cloudmass stretching from the southern Northern Tablelands down to the Victorian coast with movement from the south over southern NSW, so there may be something left in this system yet. The midday analysis from the Bureau shows another frontal complex west of Tas, though it's hard to justify it from the satpix which just show a thin line of low cloud. Latest ACARS data from Sydney shows freezing level at 14.30 around 4,500 feet and wind between 240 and 260 up to 15,000 feet with nothing above 15 knots! The ABC news item this morning about widespread snow was a bit misleading. Widely and thinly spread would a better description. Oberon observer reported 3cm snow on ground this morning, and was reporting steady a max of 2 degrees and snow during the day (though only 2mm in the gauge 9 to 3), which tallies with the view across to Oberon of gloomy SCu/FCu/Large Cu. 3pm reports of snow showers from Woolbrook (near Walcha on the Northern Tablelands), and Orange (Lithgow didn't report). In Victoria, Omeo reported some light snow before 9am, nothing else of note. Good falls in the resorts in NSW, though, with 21mm in the precip gauge at Thredbo Village and 40 at Perisher -- so, say, ~ foot of new snow. There may be some excitement left in the southerly surge (which the models predicted quite nicely), but I don't think this system has the oomph to do much -- temperatures are marginal for snow at most stations around the 1000m mark, and the air is dry (which the models predicted quite nicely!) It looks like there's a major polar blast over southeastern South America. I checked out the Yahoo forecasts for that area, and snow has been forecast for Curitiba today. From what I know, Curitiba is a city in southeastern Brazil at an altitude of about 1000 metres. That corner of Brazil is the only part of the country outside the tropics - I guess the climate there would be similar to southeast Queensland. Around 2pm, there were heavy snow showers on the road leading into Shooters Hill - 1250 metres, (about 5k's from the sign posted "Shooters Hill" area - where the showers had already passed through). An inch or two of snow on the ground in amongst the pine trees in this area and about the same in the paddocks. (I have the photos) The snow continued whilst I was parked there for say, 15 minutes. It was pea size, wet and heavy. I then drove through to Edith (1080 metres) and it changed from sleet to heavy snow showers at the Jenolan Caves/Kanagra Walls turn off (about 1200 metres?) with snow whiting the ground there. I stayed there for 30 minutes as the heavy snow showers continued for that time. I have photos of me covered in snow (I stayed out in the snow for ten minutes - it wasn't cold) and shots of the car and the sign posts, trees etc. I'd say it was around 0 to 1 degrees at this time, virtually no wind and a really enjoyable experience. Im starting not to like these cold air situations. Good for structure photos but thats about it. I took plenty of Anvil photos, and some of towering cumulus, and hail shafts. I did not hear any thunder, although i saw 1 CG at around 4.30 off the coast near Manly somewhere. Lots of development all at once around midday, and from then on it was Updraught/Anvil/Hail shafts & rain/ dead cell. No good to chase at all. I counted 9 seperate anvils at one stage, with another 3 possible anvils hidden,as almost every towering cumulus anvilled out. Most of these cells were on the ranges or along the coast/illawarra escarpment. Sunset was very interesting, with 4-5 large bulges which looked like mamatus, but much larger, lite up yellow with the sunlight, as soon as i pressed the shutter it started to rain lightly. Certainly an interesting day. Cold now, 10 degrees and i dont know how Victorians put up with these temps days on end!.
