Looking forward to the passage of this front(s).

Anybody got any interesting observations on its development for NSW,
particularly the Cent. Tablelands?

Hi all,

Well it is still raining here in Adelaide, so far since 9am yesterday,
Parafield Airport (located 5km South of my location) has had 21.4mm of
rain, Adelaide or Kent town, has had 24.4mm (located about 25km South),
Edinburgh (located 5km North) has had 21.0mm.

A small line of thunderstorms missed us by about 30km's, I only got one
shot off before retiring due to very strong gusty winds. But there were
some nice ones even at that distace away from us.

Well looks like the rain will continue for a while, so I am going to put
the heater on and warm my toes up :)

BTW Temp, at Paralowie SA, is now 11.8 degrees..

Hey Lindsay, Everyone..

The Vertical motion associated with this front is amazing.. the Vertical
Velocities reach a peak of around -55 (in yesterdays 0z forecast) or so
in NNE VIC from memory.. so i'm tipping some moderate/heavy falls in
VIC.. but the whole system seems to weaken as it moves across NSW, and
at the same time slipping SE..

The lifted Index values are never really all that low in the whole
system.. and BOM have scrapped storms for Sydney.. It doesn't look like
it's going to do much at all for us up here in Brisbane.. although being
severely SDS ridden i'm optimistic :) If i see a storm on the border
ranges on Sunday i'll be happy..

The max in Sydney today was in the 24 to 25 degree range. Fairly dry air
from the NW though. RH is in the 30% to 60% range. Some high cloud but
mostly sunny.

Since the rain started during the ASWA - Victoria meeting (yes, our fault
again!!) - Bayswater has had 12.5mm to 4.30pm & when I went for a walk a
while ago I discoverd that Dandenong Creek has broken its banks. Not a bad
result!!!

Hi all,
Well we've certainly had some wild weather this week in Perth. A low
pressure system, well actually two areas of low pressure moved through the
SW these last few days. The second feature certainly looked the better of
the two on the sat pics. However the first front did produce a narrow strip
of damage at Capel in the SW about 250k's south of Perth, I should know
more by the end of the weekend but the word "min" tornado has been thrown
around over here. So its not yet confiremd. Another block of flats with yes
you guessed it a flat roof did recieve damage in Perth. Its been a while
since Ive seen the BOM issue so many warnings for a low. 600 homes across 6
suburbs went without power in perth and cars were damaged across Perth by
fallen power lines and trees. SES said power suppiles was also disrupted in
Bunbury, Margret River, Collie, Capel, Bridgetown, Waroona, Walpole and
Dusborough. A truck slid off the road near Walpole due to a 12cm thick
covering of what was described as "ice" hail maybe??? dunno.
Things could have been alot worse tho as a 747 nearly crashed whilst
trying to land at Perth airport on thursday. The pilot had to abort the
landing after windshear caused the left wing to dip sharply and the engine
to strike the runway. Only a few weeks ago 170 ppl were injured and 3 ppl
died when the same thing happened to a plane in Hong Kong after the plane
caught fire. In a report in todays "Western Australian" Pilots say that
Perth airport in the worst airport for shear in Australia. This is due to
the Darling ranges. In winter its from shear and in summer its from
microburts from thunderstorms over the ranges. Pilots say that there can be
severe winds just 500m above the surface when its calm on the surface at
Perth airport. Wind shear accounts for more aircraft accidents than any
other single cause. Many many crashes and 680 deaths world wide since 1962.
Perths only wind shear detection device is tucked away in a factory in
osbourne park. All US airports now use this system and the only one in
operation in Australia is in Darwin. That all sounds so very familar now
does'nt it! ( dopplers ) They say that this system if installed would have
easily warned the pilot of the danger. Same old story i spose wait for one
to crash and ppl to die then they will install it. tch tch tch tch.
Thunderstorms lasted all day here yesterday as the cold pool moved through
the SW area and the BOM told me there were two other seperate reports of
funnel clouds yesterday. At this stage im not sure if this is the same
event as the one i witnessed or not.

Thanks Ben,

We'll wait and see. My Jack Russel is highly agitated, could be a good
portent for some action, he's a good weather guide. :-)

Hi Sallie, you must have missed the discussion we had a couple of weeks ago
about that very subject. The morning glory is actually a gulf feature, more
Queensland. It forms early morning in the lee of the Great Divide on Cape
York, then rolls westwards. Normanton is Queensland is one place that
experiences it quite often. It is a dry season only occurrence, and not
every morning either.

They are many variations on the theme of course. But the type of inversion
day that is particularly frustrating is when the warm continental air is
overrunning as you mention. The Illawarra escarpment is almost cliff like,
and on many summer days it can 30C at 700 metres at Robertson and 25-26C at
the base of the escarpment. On strong seas breeze inversion days the photo
chemical smog in the southern suburbs of Wollongong / Shellharbour is
dreadful. On some days one of the signs that the inversion is weak is when
fog begins to form at the top of the Illawarra Hwy pass, even at 2pm -3pm on
a summers day. I have chased one several occasions now where fog was present
in a narrow band on the pass. Lightning in fog is quite eerie.

I have a nice pic of the inversion at

http://thunder.simplenet.com/chase/inver.jpg

in this photo you just make out some older Cu from convection behind
inland ) me. Whilst to the east it is totally clear.

I notice there was no mention of this warning in the ABC TV weather
segment despite it being valid until 10pm tonight...

Weren't there also thunder and hail storms elsewhere in southwest WA?.
Plus very cold temperatures too - I see there were reports of snow on the
higher ranges there. How extensive was this snow?.
Calm and fine here in Christchurch at present, but not too cold -
northwesterly flow is starting to affect the South Island. Could be wet
midweek if a forecast low becomes slow-moving over NZ.
