A few joined the first day and by the end of the first week we had about 10 people. Since then the list has grown enormously, we now have 123 subscribers, we share our thoughts about whats happening with the day to day weather happenings, most of us have met other fellow weather enthusiasts in person in their states because of the list and ofcourse the biggest and best thing that has happened is that we now have our very own association for people that are interested in severe weather in Australia with the ASWA. A big thanks to David Hart in Boston, USA, who lets us use the world.std.com ISP that he works for, and for the work that he does in helping maintain the list, thanks David! Also thanks to Michael Bath who archives all the aussie-weather emails on his website, he's did it since day 1, and it's very handy to have when you want to look back at previous weather events that was discussed on the list. The url is: http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/storm_news/aussiewx.htm And a big thanks to everyone subscribed for making it a great list. This is accompanied by a burst of sub-532 thicknesses covering almost all of Victoria (with 528 touching the southern coast) and westerly to southwesterly gales. I'll believe it when I see it, but it's exciting to speculate. If this pattern were to eventuate, we would probably be looking at 24 hours of blizzard conditions in Victoria above the 600-metre level. Yesterday's EC was also very windy at its end, but more in the northerlies ahead of the low. Today's run should come through in the next hour or two. The UK model doesn't go out far enough (yet). I had an inactive mailing list that I was paying for, but out of which no one was getting any benefit. I asked Jacob if he thought a list devoted to Australian Weather would be of any interest to anyone. He told me he wasn't sure as he'd never seen such a thing, and only knew a handful of weather fans there himself. We decided to give it a go anyway. I was expecting, based on my experience with other mailing lists, a low volume list with maybe 20 subscriber (only 4 or 5 of whom would actually contribute actively), maybe we'd get one or two messages a day on average. I was certainly suprised! As Jacob said, we have 126 subscribed addresses (note that some people may be subscribed with more than one address) another 17 addresses subscribed to the aussie-weather-digest, and we have a large number of folks who actively participate. I have observed with other mailing lists, that they go in a cycle. First everyone is very excited about the list and tries to think of ways to get new subscribers, then there is a period where there are arguments about what on-topic or not. This is followed by long threads on topics that none but a few care about, followed by the flame wars, segmentation, long tirades about how how much better the list was in the "good ol' days" and then finally one group leaves. The remaining subscribers never seem to have the same enthusiasm, and the list just sort of stagnates. I have been pleasantly suprised to see that this really hasn't happened to aussie-weather. This is the nicest list I have ever been on. While there has been some disagreement, mis-understanding, and hurt feelings (as will happen in any group) it's always been manageable. We don't even get grumblings about administrative things like no html or binaries. I find that the subscribers are respectful of one another, don't really argue about what is off topic (because everyone has a pretty good shared understanding of what the topic is), and post interesting messages that I often post to other weather lists (with the authors permission). What has made this list so successful? Well, its not me. From the beginning, I decided to be just a technical advisor. Jacob (who has done a great job!) is a very hands off list manager. Don't mis-understand. Jacob and I are kept very busy with the list. We get at least 20 - 40 notices a day about messages that didn't go through. We also have to help folks who are having trouble subscribing, unsubscribing, or whose mail isn't going through, and approve all the mail from folks who send messages from e-mail address other that those by which they are subscribed. I'm so glad we don't have to maintain the archive too! I feel we have set-up the list, and maintained it, but not really lead it. We just sort of let it happen and only guided it at arms length. All of which brings me at last to the conclusion of this overly long posting: This list has been successful far beyond my expectations because of you the subscribers. You are an extraordinary group of 'netizens and I am proud to be a part of this. The future hold many exciting things for us as the technology improves. Jacob and I will be unveiling new things in the days to come. I do think we should all have a party on the IRC (Inter Relay Chat) to celebrate the first anniversary of the creation of the list, where, in addition to discussing weather, we can just socialize. David K. Hart list co-manager #aussie-weather Boston MA USA P.S. Just a small correction to Jacob's post I used to work for the World (world.std.com, the first commercial Internet Service Provider in the world) but left there before I started the list. My connections to "the World" have been very useful to the list. When we have had problems with majordomo, I have been able to call one of my friends who still work "the World" and get matters expedited. I now work for ON Technology, the makers of Meeting Maker, he leading real-time, cross-platform enterprise calendaring & scheduling solution. I'm happy to say we have many customers in Australia, despite the fact that we don't do anything to market there. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 012 Date: Thu, 09 Sep 1999 15:50:03 +1000 From: Ben Quinn [bodie at flatrate.net.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.61 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: BSCH Credits Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey Ben from Brisbane here.. BSCH actually won an award for the javascript yesterday, you can see this award on the following URL - full credit goes to Michael and Greg: http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/awards.htm Also Anthony Cornelius played a big part in relation to the Archives.. he pretty much donated 3/4 of what is in the archives from his own personal archives.. Both Matt Smith and Paul Miracki have also helped me out a number of times, either saving radar or lightning tracker data for the archives whilst i was unable too.. or just helping me out with the site in general.. Andrew Mcdonald also supplied the thunder sound file that is on the main page.. Without all of these people, BSCH would not be what it is today.. and i can't thank you all enough! Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey Ben from Brisbane here.. In a previous email i said that Greg Curtis helped out with the Javascript and HTML on BSCH, when in fact it was Greg Spencer.. Sorry Greg (both gregs.. lol).. Well, it looks like we could get some nice storms in SE QLD tomorrow.. AVN is forecasting some very nice instability for us, with LI's of -4 very early in the morning on the Darling Downs (well west of Brisbane) and moving towards the coast during the day.. the lowest LI figure is -5 on the southern downs late in the afternoon, but we will feel the effects of an area of -4.. Although there dosn't seem to be any huge amount of shear.. the wind profile still has medium-strong winds at most levels, and there is certainly more then enough instability to whip up some nice storms.. i wouldn't be surprised at hail in any strong storm in NE NSW or SE QLD tomorrow.. we could also pick up some late evening/overnight storms, although i think it's more likely to be thundery rain/rain periods.. I haven't gone over any forecasts outside 48 hours in any great detail.. but i notice that BOM is forecasting storms for us on Monday as well.. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 017 From: "Michael Thompson" [michaelt at ozemail.com.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: Re: aus-wx: Ausie-weather list - 1 year!!!!
