Norman Lynagh wrote on Thu, 9 Sep 1999 06:42:26 +0100: > > Michael, > > Can you share the script with those of us still climbing the learning > curve :) > > Norman (ex-BoM) Perhaps...what you need is a UNIX box (I use a Sun SS5 with Solaris 2.5.1), Perl 5.00402 at least, access to a standard UNIX sh (shell) plus utilities like sed, grep etc., gifsicle 1.12 (for cropping the gifs if you want that) and snoop, strings etc. for when the interface changes and the script "breaks". There would also be some customisation for your particular setup so you would need a reasonable knowledge of how to write sh scripts and perl. If you're on another UNIX O/S, gifsicle and perl would need to be built from source or installed from a compatible release. I use the perl for http proxy-firewall access. This has some customisation for working behind particular firewalls. There are other stdin/out http access software such as wwwgrap which I havn't played with yet...so recustomisation is a steep learning curve for the novice but easy for someone suitably experienced. Like all "open-source", any release that I may make is without any formal support obligation...but then again, I hardly ever need to use a "real" browser leaving my computer (rather than me) to hit over 100 URL's every 10 mins for the ASWA archive and all my other "work-related" hits. That leaves my fingers and brain free for detailed emails instead:-) I might just briefly explain how it (the script) works... Firstly a "hit" is made to retrieve the dates for the current model run (AVN or MRF). This differs a little for the READY metrogram case and the chart case. The script terminates if no update is required from the previous run. Another "hit" is made with "metdata" parameters to generate the metrogram or chart required. The final "hit" is then made to retrieve the generated metrogram (plus data) or chart. For each case of chart (MRF+12hrs, AVN+6hrs), a fresh "hit" is needed to generate the chart and another to retrieve it. I also post- process the metrogram data for import into MS-Excel where I then run a macro to generate some customised metrograms with appropriate corrections applied e.g for altitude. I'm looking at other scripting utlities for this function so that I can kiss goodbye to MS-Excel once and for all:-) Human time taken for all this is less than 3 minutes and most of that is spent adjusting my model "correction" static parameters (weightings for correcting outgoing radiation flux etc.) By-the-way, MS-Excel is run within SunPC/Win95/Office97, but it looks like StarOffice 5.1 will do everything that I need. That's a major improvement from where I sit in a dogmatic UNIX world:-) Phew!...I needed to write that up:-) Michael Scollay mailto:michael.scollay at telstra.com.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 009 From: Paul Yole [vortex at wwdg.com] Date: Thu, 9 Sep 1999 18:54:11 -0600 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Happy Birthday Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi All. (Btw I live in the nice part of Woodridge in Logan City, just south of Brisbane) The 4pm radar shows lots of good intensity mostly NW of Brisbane including an area of max reflectivity NE of Crows Nest. Some more precip is missing me to the NW but thunder is still occurring. Damn...have to go to work soon...
