Hello everybody,

2 new snaps on my website.

1) Back edge of a beautiful cold air cumulus passing over my place on Sept
3 having just dumped 10mm of rain and tiny hail. Notice circular anvil
spreading overhead.

2) One for the history buffs, found while I was doing a historical snowfall
search. No snow, but a nice rope tornado from 1935. Appila is only a few
km away from Booleroo, where Wayne McCullam (sp?) caught his well known
multi vortex in 1992. Once again - November/December seems to be the big
months.
BTW - the book this is copied from is called "Between the Ranges" compiled
by JDW Babbage, 1972.

Cheers!

As some of you will have seen on the news, Hurricane Floyd is bearing
down on the south-eastern US. This is a borderline Category 4/5
storm - if it maintains this intensity to landfall it will be only
the third time this century that such an intense storm has hit
the US mainland.

At present the eye is approximately 550 km ESE of Miami and is heading
directly towards it at about 25 km/h. Models (and the usual history
of tropical cyclones in this region) would suggest a northward turn
at some stage, but there is no sign of this yet. (If it does turn
north, just about any part of the US East Coast could plausibly be
in the firing line, although the intensity would probably fall
somewhat as it moved over cooler water).

(By way of comparison, Hurricane Andrew was slightly less intense,
and much smaller in area).

Expect to see an awful lot in the media about this over the next
couple of days.

The US National Hurricane Center's web page is at http://www.nhc.noaa.
gov. Not altogether surprisingly, this page is responding rather
slowly at the moment (although it will probably pick up later in the
day as (a) it gets into the early hours of the morning in Florida
(b) people start evacuating and (c) the power starts going out). If
you can't get into there (or NHC - which is in Miami, although I
presume it's got a backup centre - gets into difficulties itself)
then http://www.storm99.com is a good backup.

You're not wrong Ben - those pics are just fantastic. Actually I've
been pretty busy lately doing things other than weather so I just had a
chance to check out the BSCH. Congrats to you and all the people who
helped it is a fantastic site, both visually and in terms of the
content. Maybe we can twist your arm to do forecasts / severe weather
statements for NSW and Victoria as well :)

Also liked that pic which Phil put up of the SA tornado which occurred
early this century - can just make out a very solid wall cloud in that
one.

Anybody living north of Sydney would be flat out lighting any sort of fire
of late. But southwards the rainfall has been below average, although enough
to keep things in a "green drought". The start of the fire season has been
brought forward 1 month on the NSW South Coast.

I was only reminded of this this afternoon when a small brush fire broke out
near Albion Park.

Very nice. I have heard about that lightning stuff, I think I even see some
once many years ago.

But we do get some nice strato-cumulus here, although last weekends severe
drizzle did not eventuate.

I see that the latest GASP has scaled back the low depression near Tasmania.
Looks like another fizzer.

When in what is left of the year is a weather event actually going to be
stronger than than forecast ?

Only 0.8mm in Seven Hills for this month making it so far the driest
since the driest (in 50 years) of 1989 (0.4mm) and the 2nd driest on
record. A similar 10/11 year gap occurred in 1957 and 1968 when the then
two driest readings were less than 1mm..rather interesting, I think, but
perhaps purely coincidental...
I would say this is almost certain to mean October/November will be a
good bit wetter, though on this month's levels that wouldn't be hard to
do, depending on what one means by 'wetter'...

Its central pressure is estimated to be 927 Hpa which from memory is 3
Hpa less than Andrew's when it crossed the coast.

Hello,

I am from Elimbah, Queensland - about 50 kms north of Brisbane, off the
main highway to the west.

I notice you are from Victoria - kind of like a second home to me - am
there 2-3 times per year.

Trying to get another host for my site just now - server has been down for
a week.

Cheers,

Sel.
