Hi all,

A look at Benn's radar loop of the recent Sydney storms,

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/ben/sydney/eventloop.gif

shows an interesting development in the last few frames.
Seems to me the ever backbuilding line of storms eventually
forms a mesolow very near Sydney. Any surface obs that
confirm this guess?

Good on you, AC!

That's unlikely unless the Northern News is part of the Fairfax or
Packer group of papers. If it's an independant, then the artical
will more than likely remain local to QLD people. Would someone
be kind enough to scan the artical in and paste it up on the
appropriate ASWA server for all people in ASWA to see?

Hey all

Well it looks like winter has departed from SE Australia, for the next week
at least anyway. All models are in agreement that a huge high will become
cemented in the Tasman, any fronts/troughs dieing in the arse. The BOM are
forecasting 32 for Adelaide on Tuesday and 26 for Melbourne. I'm thinking
Melbourne could approach 30 next week. This warm weather looks extending
until the end of the week, the only hiccup been a weak front mid week.

Reached 31 in Mildura today (forecast high of 24), and temps are now
approaching 40 in northern SA.

Bring it on.

All sorts of records could be in jeopardy here. Inland there doesn't seem
to be even a glimmer of a break during next week.

Mt Dare (SA) reached 39 today. Even Whyalla is forecasting 37 on
Tuesday. The SA state record for September is 40.5 and could well go,
as might the Victorian one of 35.6 and the NSW one of 38.9, in the
middle of next week.

I'll be offline for the next week or so. Enjoy the sunshine!

Hi Harald,

Would the wind backing form NW to S/SW immeditely behind the storm (which it
did) add any creedence to that theory?

Max.

Hi Malcom,

Welcome to the list. Great stuff and excellent introduction. I will be
looking forward to meeting you. The next ASWA meeting will be the 2nd
Saturday of October which is the 9th October. Now I am also interested
whether you will attend the AMOS weatherwatch meeting next Wednesday night
at Macqurie University. I can send you the details again if you wish.

Now I will be heading somewhere tomorrow and hopefully can go with someone
else perhaps in the Hunter or maybe to the NW of Sydney near Mudgee or
whatever. I like the trough lines that are moving through. I wish there was
more upper level divergence though. The air just unstable and sending
storms up everywhere. Now the activity was observable from sunrise this
morning in the Hunter and to the NW. I think tomorrow, the activity may be
in the inland...

Hi Jimmy & others,

I've been monitoring the AVN model for some weeks and it has been
very close to reality up to their 72hr forecast. AVN puts a trough
through Sth NSW today as well as through the Sydney to Mid North
coast area from tonight and staying in that vicinity throughout
Sat/Sun. I'm betting on not having to go too far away from Sydney
given the building that NE moisture can add coupled with a little
colder conditions aloft and that famous "Sydney Effect" that has
given great storms in the past...So much for a dry September and
probability for Y2000 Olympics. This looks like a spectacular
weekend of storms...

Hi Everyone,

I have hooked my Davis Weather Monitor II up to the net today. For all those
interested in seeing Blaxlands current weather conditions go to
www.ozemail.com.au/~mjpiper/aws.htm

Alternatively you can go to www.ozemail.com.au/~mjpiper/index.htm and scroll
down to Live Weather Observations. Also there is some trend graphs of the
last 24hrs accessible from that page.

I will try to have the online weather station running as much as possible
however it will not be online 24hrs a day as I do not have a permanent net
connection. The rainfall figures given are also not yet valid as I am going
to connect the rain guage this weekend.

Matthew Piper

P.S. Had some weak thundery showers pass by here today. Only heard a couple
of rumbles of thunder. At sunset there was a very impressive looking storm
on the northern horizon which I noticed on radar was over the Putty Rd area.
Took a photo of it with my new camera so it should be interesting to see how
it comes out.

I was coming home from the pub this
arvo and I saw the last few trailing cumulus developing in a row moving
NE. When I turned off Richmond Road onto Grange Avenue, a bright
flash!!!! It can't be lightning as that is just a little pissy thing.
Well further down it happened again and then I saw a car following me...
And then it happened again whilst I was driving NW. What a great bolt of
lightning in clear air with nothing but the darkening sky although still
quite light. I couldn't stop so I charge home, ran up stairs set up the
video but nothing much happened except when I decided to turn off the
video camera!!!!!

By the way, the other night I thought the batteries were playing up!!! Nope, the tape was set to non-writeable mode!!! My father had left the tape like that. I missed some good lightning bolts from that night. Oh well....

An active front is expected to cross the country next Monday and Tuseday followed by a brief period of wintry southerlies, and possibly snow to low levels in the south. Could be a repeat of this weeks (Monday/Tuesday) wintry blast which saw (light) snow to about 300 metres in the South Island, and on the North Island high country. BTW, we had scattered thunder and hailstorms in Canterbury (but not Christchurch - though thunder on Banks Peninsula) just prior to the wintry change on the 20th. I will be going on a chase tomorrow, if anything develops locally, as I wont have time to get out of Sydney. Hi all Well I found the article on page 4 in my local "Albert & Logan News" which is part of the Quest Newspaper Group. I think it's only for around Brisbane, but someone might prove me wrong. Here's the article: http://bsch.simplenet.com/temp/antsarticle.jpg He did a very good job too. My interpretation is as follows... Initially all cells moved ESE. An inidividual cell which originated near Katoomba merged with a line of storms from West of Camden, around Paramatta. At this point the cell intensified dramatically, and then moved NE towards Avalon. This is what I would call a "left mover" and I believe this indicates a cell which has become sufficiently intense to exert control over the local atmosphere. At the end of the loop, you can just see the NE movement lessen as the cell weakens near Avalon. In the wake of this storm line another cell developed near Penrith and then moved ESE to give a second event for the lower North shore. This is quite unusual as the first line would usually kill off the convective potential. The consistent ESE direction of this latter storm would suggest there was no overall wind change at least in the middle layers of the atmosphere. But please feel free to rubbish this - any other/alternate interpretations would be welcome. John. >snip Hi Harald, Would the wind backing form NW to S/SW immeditely behind the storm (which it did) add any creedence to that theory?
