Hi all

Well I found the article on page 4 in my local "Albert & Logan News" which
is part of the Quest Newspaper Group. I think it's only for around
Brisbane, but someone might prove me wrong.

Here's the article:

Hey, Matthew, that's great. How do you manage 5-minute updates without
a permanent net connection?

Hi Max and all,

The radar reflectivity features in the 10:20 UTC image
(22/09/99) are probably associated with the combined cold
outflows from the various storms of that line.
I would not be surprised if the warm air ahead of this
meso-coldfront/boundary blows NW-SE, and the rain-cooled air behind
from SW-NE. This would lead to the expected cyclonic
curvature of the flow across the front/boundary.

Cheers, Harald

----- Forwarded message from Max King -----

Would the wind backing form NW to S/SW immeditely behind the storm (which it
did) add any creedence to that theory?

Max.

There is a storm chase on. Matthew Piper and I will be in one car and
if others want to tag along, they an come and meet up with James Harris.

If you can't get here (if you really want to meet me and my corruptive
party) on time 8 am, just go up there in the Hunter and we will meet
somewhere. Just like in the movie Twister. We may stay overnight. I am on
holidays and am not so much in a hurry to return. For those that stay in
Sydney, don't despair. With me out of here, there is a lot of activity that
should occur anyway.

The situation has improved and I know the area around Wagga looks tempting
but I am heading towards the Hunter where the wind fields LOOK a little
better. There is a predicted lower level jet and backward veering in the
lower layers. Boy, I am no expert.

My mobile for those who dare to ring is 0408 020468 and 0414393267

Hi all,

Received 5mm in Higgins (Canberra) from a very electrically active storm between 2.00am and 3.00am this morning. Almost continuous lightning and thunder for a period around 20-30 minutes.

At 9.50am another band of storms is approaching. The cells are tending to merge although with reducing intensity as they move east-south eastwards. There is quite a large amount of anvil outflow ahead of these storms. Hopefully this morning activity won't detract too much from the potential for development later this afternoon.

Patrick

While the models can get a bit dodgy out that far it certainly looks like tomorrow could be interesting in central NSW! As Paul pointed out in an earlier message CAPE is high but the winds are fairly weak at all levels. Storms are firing up very quickly - but they dont seem to be lasting for too long. There is a nice one heading right for Forster as I write this although I'll bet it will die b4 it gets there. Well what can I say, the Southern Illawarra has been dead boring, leaving one with that cheated feeling. Wednesday - action developed over southern highlands, slid NE, then off the escarpment just north of Wollongong. In Shellharbour clear sunny skies, did not even hear thunder ! Thursday - middle layer cloud heaven. Friday - the SE wind change that came through at 6.30-am was the death knock for Illawarra storms. Surprisingly a storm did develop on the south coast, but most developed at where I estimated that the SE stalled. The sight from sunny Shellharbour at sunset saw a row of storms far to the north, perhaps north of Sydney, and another way to south. The southern Illawarra was in a clear sunny oasis. John Graham and I went out for obs from noon today with some large cells developing way to the south (later checked on radar to find they were 50km SW of Grafton. Further weaker cells developed to the far W near Tenterfield, and some late cells to the far NW and N on the Border ranges. This latter area had congestus bubbling around most of the day, with occasional pilleus, but nothing much became of it. We did get hopeful briefly around 1pm as some large cu/congestus formed almost overhead, but in hindsight I guess this occurred as the seabreeze spread over the Alstonville platueu, lifting some air. We observed some brief but exciting (!) willy willies cross our path for a few minutes too. The observations were called off about 3pm as it became obvious nothing would happen. Yesterday some strong storms developed to the SW of Grafton and tracked N dying around sunset. Altocumulus spread into my location early evening, but no lightning was seen. regards, Michael ================================================================== Michael Bath mailto:mbath at ozemail.com.au Wollongbar NSW 2477 http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/ http://www.lightningphotography.com/ Secretary ASWA Inc. http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ ================================================================== +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 022 X-Sender: halden at mail.lis.net.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.6 (32) Date: Sat, 25 Sep 1999 18:28:40 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Halden Boyd [halden at lis.net.au] Subject: Re: aus-wx: Northern Rivers and those ants Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hiyas.... There were two big anvils SW of Evans Head in the Dorrigo area at 11.30am and I thought we could be in for some action. However by 12.30 they had blown over and that was the end of it. There wasn't any anabatic cloud here today on the coast which is a good indicator of action. Perhaps tomorrow..perhaps not. I noticed last night shitloads of flying ants around on sunset which is an indicator of a few weeks dry spell... the ground ants are very lazy too so there appears to be little to get excited about up here.... He, Matthew Piper and James Harris are at the lookout at Quirindi watching awesome lightning, maily to the south as things gets going again in the central west. They're just setting up the tripods for some lightning photography, so lets hope the action keep up - it certainly looks like it from radar and the latest IR pics. They have seen some nice storms today, but just pulse storms, no supercells! They will fill in the details later, however Jimmy did indicate that there was a lull in activity that has since returned thanks to the seabreeze spreading inland. They're staying over and will continue chasing tomorrow. cheers, Michael ================================================================== Michael Bath mailto:mbath at ozemail.com.au Wollongbar NSW 2477 http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/ http://www.lightningphotography.com/ Secretary ASWA Inc. http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ ================================================================== +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 024 Date: Sat, 25 Sep 1999 09:09:57 +0100 From: Les Crossan [les.crossan at virgin.net] Organization: Personal - ICQ 17296776 - note all times in GMT X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.61 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: NSW chase update Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Michael Bath wrote: > Hi all, > > Just had a call returned from Jimmy. We had a few textbook thundery showers today, but I spent most of the day watching, in awe, the anvils to the North of me, I'm quite surprised there doesn't seem to have been a great deal going on. I noticed (anyone else) a massive cell off Sydney at about midday today (25th) on radar, which would have been very interesting had it been 20-50 Km to the west! Another April 14 perhaps! It started out pretty boring with me missing out on a flight to Geraldton with some mates but with what we had in the way of storms, Im glad I stayed home :-). I didnt get a chance to do anything until the afternoon because I decided to go for a short flight anyway. I got home and checked the radar and noticed some storms developing to the north or me. I grabbed the camera and got up on the roof. Sure enough, there were the Cb's in the distance with fairly fibrous anvils, but they were there. I took a couple pics of them then came back and checked the radar. There was a line of storms developing off the coast. I jumped in my car and headed off with my younger brother (couldnt stop him from coming with me). I could hear heaps of static on the radio on the way to the coast and when we got there, there were CG's all over the place. I set my camera and tried my luck at getting some daytime shots of lightning (please let them turn out well :-) ). I used the 10 shots I had left in the camera and then headed home again. I told my other brother and his mate that they were missing out on one awesome lightning show here. They got off the computer and came with me for a short drive to the local Marina. There was 2 storms there, one west and one east. I had a real hard time trying to work out which one to film with the video camera. Every time I looked at one storm a ripper strike would come from the other, gee it was annoying. Anyway, when both batteries were dead on the camera we headed back to my place, got the still camera and went and bought a 36 exp roll of film. We headed south along the Freeway and stopped just south of Rockingham. There was no street lights anywhere so I set the camera up. There were cg's everywhere, I reckon I caught somewhere between 20-25 strikes on this roll. Im hoping I had the camera set up properly. Oh well, I'll know on Monday. I'll get the pics up as soon as I get the rolls of film developed Cheers Greg +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
