Here's what I can add anyway. They select a channel for the trip & everyone stays tuned to that channel. Often cars will have to relay messages from the lead car to 'tail-end-Charlie as the convoy can get a little stretched out at times. Try to keep it as short as possible but not too close for travelling at whatever speed you may be doing. If you have a lot of cars you will find the lead car cannot talk to the end car. TLC typically have around 6 cars on a trip which is a good manageable number as far as the radio communications goes. Ten cars would usually put lead and end out of direct communication. Range depends on the local topography. If it's mountainous, you'll find that cars will only be able to hear when they are on or near crests of hills or there are other ways for the transmission to get through - standard CB is 'line of sight' transmission unless you can bounce it off something nearby. You could for instance hear when you are in a valley if the vehicle transmitting is in the valley too & there are no hills in the way. At typical travelling distances you can usually talk to the cars immediately in front or behind - unless it gets really mountainous. Range on the open, flat road - I forget - but I think we've been able to talk up to about 5 or 10km. Depends a lot on the quality of people's sets, how well they've installed them ( eg. bad connections seem to lose a lot of output power), and how good the receiver's aerial is. Longer can be better - coz it's line of sight - but you can get 1/2 and 1/4 wave aerials I think - can't remember which sets use those. (May not be standard CB) You usually find there is at least one car who can't be heard or only the car immediately ahead or following can hear. It is worth doing a test run so they can get it fixed before the trip. They use nicknames or first names - usually call by nickname and then switch to first names at some stage during the conversation (remember to keep it brief - someone else may be waiting to tell you all something important). It's not often that you find another group on the same channel that are close enough to interfere (unless you are in the high country!). If you do, you can switch channels but remember to ensure that everyone in the group has heard that you are changing channels. If Jimmy heads slightly SW into the upper Hunter today I am sure he will get some action. Best we can hope for is some isolated showers in the onshore flow. On the M4 just before the turnoff to Rooty Hill i saw a cloud lowering and dark rain curtain, so i headed for Rooty Hill, and watched as the storm developed, i saw the 1st CG after waiting about 5 minutes, then it started! This thing really started to intensify as it moved NW (i think) towards Richmond i think.. I rang Jimmy a couple of times to see where he was (North of Armidale when i rang him) and asked for advice on a good lookout, he said to head up Richmond Road and you cant fail, to cut a long story short i turned down a street and saw the uni of west sydney, hawksbury campus, and a big sports field so i sat around there for the duration of the storm as it let out CG's VERY close, i mean quit a bit of crack/boom stuff (should have some fantastic thunder recorded on film).. and the thing that REALLY bothered me was that there was a group of people at some car driving thing at the uni, all standing out in the rain, next to tree's, with umbrella's, while there are CG's VERY close every minute or so while it is pelting down with rain.. they are very lucky people. WOW sensational TRY by St George/Illawarra 10 minutes b4 half time! ran way with it, and they get the conversion!) The storm died slowly, and i headed back home to watch the GF. A very nice storm, and its been a great week so far :), and the storm season is really shaping up nicely compared to this time last year. THE AUSTRALIAN SEVERE WEATHER ASSOCIATION INC WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - Issue 10
The Australian Severe Weather Association Inc (ASWA) is here to provide a platform for discussion into severe weather, research and education. A lot has been written about about Australia's severe weather in the past and you can view many different stories of people's experience with the weather in the offical ASWA magazine "Storm News". Discussion about the latest weather and a great place to learn from is the aus-wx mailing list from which ASWA Inc was originally formed. The mailing list is filled with people who are eager to help teach others about all aspects of meterology and to share their experiences.
Membership into the ASWA Inc is $30 a year (with access to the Bureau of Meterology's radar and a quarterly subscription to "Storm News) or if you don't wish for radar $20 a year (with the quarterly subscription to "Storm News" still remaining.) Both visitors and members are welcomed to attend State Meetings. State Meetings are held in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland in their capital cites. Members can also have the chance to buy an ASWA T-shirt in either polo or round neck styles. If you would like to join you can visit the ASWA Inc website at http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ and fill in an online application form or get in contact with your State Rep. All details can be found at the website.

I don't care if i have to hock my grandmother, i'll be getting the pictures developed ASAP.. I also saw some nice storms (one with an overshootting top) on the border ranges late thisafternoon.. these storms have continued (multicellular) through the evening.. as well as other storms developing over southern inland QLD.. Look nice on the sat pics.. but unfortunately too far away for us to see lightning.. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 015 Date: Sun, 26 Sep 1999 22:51:52 +1000 From: Ben Quinn [bodie at flatrate.net.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.61 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: NSW Storms - Satellite Picture Animation Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey me again.. I have compiled a 50+ hour satellite picture animation of the activity in NSW over the past few days (1 hour intervals).. It was made for my own personal archives, but if you want to check it out you can do so at: http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/archiveddata/otherstates/nsw/26-09-99/satpics/nswstorms.gif (almost 1.5 meg) It's quite spectacular at times.. some great storms down there the last few days.. and some comparable storms in parts of southern QLD today as well.. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
