Yo Ben,

I did see a lightning in that storm bank to the SW at around 5.45pm, as I
was on my way home to Mt. Crosby. Appeared to have a well developed back
sheared anvil (I guess very little jet stream) - but the whole thing was
rather fibrous and looked pathetic on radar.

John.
>snip

I also saw some nice storms (one with an overshootting top) on the border
ranges
late thisafternoon.. these storms have continued (multicellular) through
the
evening.. as well as other storms developing over southern inland QLD..
Look
nice on the sat pics.. but unfortunately too far away for us to see
lightning..

Hi everyone

Jimmy called me this evening at work to give me an update on what they
were doing, they are spending another night at Tamworth as Matt Piper and
James Harris have fallen ill and have rung up there work places calling in
sick.., and Jimmy suspects the trough line will fire up again so they just
might have to chase another day ;)

Last night they had a ripper of a lightning show, and today was so so until
around i think he said 2-3pm, when they pulled into macca's to get some
food at tamworth, and they saw a cloud and thought not much of it, 15
minutes later after gobbling down food, it was a storm. They are really
enjoying themselves and Matt Piper said he has a few rolls of film to get
developed, and Jimmy has taken video of the "high contrast" storms and
lightning.

Anyway thats it

Hey peoples

Well I got my lightning pics back today and I must say im a little
dissappointed. I thought they would be better than they were :-(. I went
to M. Fewings place after getting them developed for some advice on what
I did wron and found that I didnt have the appeture wide enough plus I
had the zoom angle too wide. I had it set between 28 and 50 for
lightning that was about 10km away. I should have put the other lense on
the camera and zoomed right in on the action. Oh well, i can only learn
from my mistakes and get it right next time.

I was lucky with getting 2 daytime shots. I have uploaded the best pics
to a temp folder on the ASWA site since my own web site isnt working
properly at the moment. Ther URLS are:

http://www.severeweather.asn.au/temp/light1.jpg
http://www.severeweather.asn.au/temp/light2.jpg
http://www.severeweather.asn.au/temp/light3.jpg
http://www.severeweather.asn.au/temp/light4.jpg
http://www.severeweather.asn.au/temp/light5.jpg
http://www.severeweather.asn.au/temp/light6.jpg
http://www.severeweather.asn.au/temp/light7.jpg

I have enlarged the strikes so a couple of them look grainy. IF anyone
else has any tips on what else I may have done wrong, please let me know
so I can get it right next time :-)

Regards

Greg

Thanks Ben - a very interesting and instructive loop - now I know why I was
woken up at 2.00am on Saturday morning... ;-)

There were some interesting storms in SA as well.

Having a further look at the satellite loop here I noticed a very
interesting circulation over central NSW that starts to become evident at
99092521z. The circulation becomes more obvious from 99092600z over the next
few hours as the storms circulate around this upper low.

I think animations are a very useful tool in increasing our understanding of
the dynamics of the atmosphere - they certainly have been in this case.

Howdy all after a long absence around the Country side.......

Excellent storm on Saturday in Taree. Low, ragged squall line, followed by
decent downdrafts. Heavy/ Torrential localised rain. I was actually reffin'
footy and we had to stop the game because of the cg lightning and the threat
that was advancing towards us. Heavy rain followed for 45 mins - it completely
flooded the field. Saw about 25 cg's within 250m of where I was standing as well
as tonnes all over the place. I was surprised there was no hail though...it had
that great green tinge and was savage enough.

Question for those who might know - such as Laurier, Don W or Mark H. I rang and
reported it to Weather21 and asked them to get the AWS obs for Taree - they said
there was little rain recorded. However I was within 100m of the old BOM
recording site in Taree (at the radio station..) and it would have recorded the
whole fury of the rain. Is that station still reporting? I think there would
have been at least 40 - 50mm received (considering a 100m field was under
water!!).

On another note - my days in NSW are now numbered with me taking up a post at
Darwin Magistrates Court as Civil / Criminal Registrar just in time for the wet
season! Now I think I will really see some rain........

On Sunday, I found a great spot from which to observe storms
and my kids playing on the beach. It's hard to do both
together but I stood on the Collaroy Beach (Sydney's Nothern
Beaches) storm water outfall, that juts out into the surf some
70m, on Sunday morning and looked toward the S/SW/W/NW/N. The
beach, surf club house plus a few trees lie in the foreground.
These were back-dropped with some rather pretty (not spectacular)
storm cells illuminated directly by the late-morning Sun that
were popping up nearly all over the Sydney metro area. This time,
I had a camera ready...[clik]...kid photo, kid-photo, storm-photo,
kid-photo, wave&kid-photo, kid-photo-with-storm-in-background...
nothing better than "two birds in one hand"...three happy kids
with their mum playing on a beach, dad with camera in-hand,
a great view, some good cells and a warm, spring (huh!) Sun
on your back:-)

Jimmy and the sickies are at Gilgandra ( at 2.15pm) just near the clearing
edge of shower activity. To the west some activity is developing, probably
around Nyngan. They are going to head a little further west a see whay
happens as Nyngan is another 1.5hours drive.

No warnings out yet, but satpics show some cells developing.

We've had remarkably heavy, steady yet isolated rain in the Blue
Mountains since around 6pm yesterday. I seemed to have scored the
heaviest of it, with 79.6 in the gauge for the 24 hours to 9am, though
all of that fell after 5pm yesterday. I've had a further 10.4mm to 2pm
for a total of 90.0mm in about 19 hours. The rain has been fairly
consistent, though the heaviest of it was between 3 and 10am, when the
Mt Boyce gauge was receiving between 4 and 10mm each hour.

The rain seems to have been confined to the Mountains, though the
western suburbs of Sydney got about an inch in the 24 hours (Glenmore
Park 24, Badgery's Ck 24, Richmond AP 28). Surprisingly, the nearest
gauge to me (the official Blackheath one) had only 46 compared to my
79.6 and Mt Boyce (about 3km to my west) 63.2. Katoomba received 56.8,
Lawson 57.6 and Kurrajong Heights 61.6. Peats Ridge received 26.4mm,
otherwise falls south of the Hunter were very light or non-existant.

The radar showed a band of level 2 echoes moving in from the ENE most
of the night. The surface analyses at
(http://www.ozemail.com.au/~wbc/aussiewx/ show an area of strong
convergence over the Blue Mountains at 3 and 9am, moving southwest by
midday, while the wind here has moved more to the N and rain has
eased. Blackheath seems to do best in these ENE conditions, as
moisture is funneled up the Grose Valley at relatively low levels
before being forced to rise over the 1100m ridge on which Blackheath
and Mount Victoria are located. My gauge is close to the escarpment
while the official Blackheath gauge is about 1km back from it,
probably explaining the significant difference in totals. .

Any additional thoughs would be appreciated.

Laurier

Hi Everyone

I just got a postcard from Anthony in the mail, thought id share it with
you all

"Hi Matt
So how's (hopefully stormless) Sydney? We've been averaging 4-6 cells a
day, dont get too excited though as there generally short lived. The only
good stuff was on Friday - when we were out shopping (and i didnt have my
camera, Typical!). Going on a tour of the Island tomorrow + submarine
diving and dinner cruise, as well as going to volcano's on wednesday. We
leave for LA, Disneyland on Thursday, Talk to you soon."

He is in Hawaii at the moment and the postcard is of a really nice sunset..

Greg,

I'd be interested what vantage point you used for those pictures (ie,
where abouts in Perth). Looks a little like Ocean Reef marina to me :)

Regards,
Paul.

Welcome to Matthew Pearce!!! Matthew, there's so much to learn from the
people on the list & so many friends to make & so many like minded people
out there!!

also.......
Today was the warmest day in Bayswater since 26th March!!!!!!

Saw 'overshooting stratocumulus' this afternoon - well, ya gotta do
something while you're waiting for the season to start

BTW - definitions I came across for you .....
Theta-E: This is a measure of energy available for convection based on
temperature and moisture at a given level.
or
The temperature a parcel of air would have if a) it was lifted until it
became saturated, b) all water vapor was condensed out, and c) it was
returned adiabatically (i.e., without transfer of heat or mass) to a
pressure of 1000 millibars. Theta-e, which typically is expressed in degrees
Kelvin, is directly related to the amount of heat present in an air parcel.
Thus, it is useful in diagnosing atmospheric instability.

Hope this helps!!
All the best,

Jane

There was no report in from Robertson for Sunday and I suspect that up to
around 50mm would have fallen there. In Shellharbour we had heavy but short
showers from about 3pm through to around 7pm.

The rain certainly liked any lift afforded by altitude. At one stage after a
very heavy shower I went for a drive to Kiama. You could see that 10-15km to
sea it was almost clear, yet cloud thickened rapidly near the coast, along
the Illawarra escarpment it shot straight up into impressive congestus.
There was non-stop rain along the SW Illawarra escarpment Robertson - Barren
Grounds from 2pm to at least dark yesterday. There were some distant rumbles
around 4pm from a cell over Mt Saddleback.

Surprise! I just heard a short burst of heavy rain on the roof tiles just
then ( 10.15pm Monday ), so it is not over yet, although I do not expect too
much.

If you want to see some of the best supercell photos I have personally seen
go to

http://www.storm-track.com/

You could not have drawn a better picture of a textbook supercell.
