The daytime shots were taken at North Beach looking towards the South
west. The night time ones were taken in Shoalwater just to the south of
Rockingham looking towards the South. There is a small carpark just to
the west of the jetty from where the ferry to Penguin Island leaves.

Yeah, I think I was lukcy with that one. I had the camera settings
almost right, also it was a really bright strike so it sorta overcame
the half closed appeture, certainly a mistake I'll never make again :-)

Michael Thompson's comment on Illawarra rain said no data from Robertson
(the Pie shop is where the official rainfall is measured - they are
quite slack lately, so if you are up that way get onto them!).
The AWS at Robertson recorded 85 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on 27th.
most fell on Sunday afternoon with 35 mm in an hour around 3 pm and
another 28 mm in 2 hours from 6 pm.
Upper Calderwood, in the same area had 54 mm and Wattamoola 27 mm.

The ASWA member's archive of radar that my computer downloads each
10 minutes contains the images for the following areas;

ade256
ade1024
bri256
bri1024
gra256
mel256
mel1024
per256
per1024
syd256
syd1024
tas256
tas1024

In addition, the BoM's MSL analysis chart is downloaded for each
update provided plus hourly satpic images of NPMOC GMS5 images
for...

gmsd
gmsc
gmsfull

ASWA members can request images specifying UTC time from these
archives, For example, send me an Email message with;

ade256 199909221000 199909230040

or if you don't know, then I'll work it out if you know the
approximate time of the activity. A zip file of the images
will be created and ftp'd to the simplenet site of Michael
Bath & Jimmy Deguara.

Hi every1,

Jimmy has recovered. Well, I was wondering why today looked like there was
some sort of instability!!. I saw some large than normal cumulus almost
glaciating but not quite. Now as the cloud has cleared, I can see some
large cumulus and thundershowers on the Central Coast area. Cumulus is
streaming from the E-NE. Winds are fresh NE. Wow what a few days we have
had....

Clyve & I tested our CB's & came up with a range (not optimum, but clear
enough to be heard) of 12kms across C.U.B (as in Carlton United Breweries)
and the entire Melbourne CBD!!!!! Not bad when I've still got the magnetic
aerial this thing came with. These units would be perfect for communicating
on the chase in November..........

Uniden Pro 510XL (40 channel) normally $129 from Strathfield Car Radios ($99
if you haggle hard enough ) and even a woman can fit it - yes it's
mounted under the dash in my car, and yes I fitted it......

4:30pm Tuesday.

We've just had 8mm in 20 minutes here in Blackheath, easing off now to
light rain/mist. No wind this time.

Rain came as a heavy shower, smaller drops than yesterday but very
intense fall.

Very misty now.

Yes Laurier,

It was very heavy here too. My partner took the reading at 7:50am on
Monday morning (I have the flu)and there was 46mm in the gauge and then
we took it again at nine and another 14mm had fell in that time! So,
60mm for the 24 hours to 9am Monday. 28mm fell in the 24 hours to 9am
tuesday at my station also. Even though we are back a little further
from the escarpment than you, there is a fairly deep gully going from
our place to Govetts Leap falls and the rain was rifling through here
and slamming into our house. The wind was quite strong at times here too
and I am wondering if such an effect might have reduced the amount of
rain in my gauge? The rain was certainly blowing at a pretty decent
angle there for a while. Did you get the wind as strong at your place? I
am far from expert on these things, but to the naked eye, the wind
certainly seemed to be keeping some of the rain away from the gauge. Our
gully really channels the easterlies quite strongly through here.

Looks like the T/storms that were reported have all died out. The front
died and left us standing in the rain :(

So I guess I will not need those Radar images after all .

All I ask is for one small cell with heaps of electrical activity in it :)

Hi all

I've kept this quiet because I'm someone with the philosophy "I'll believe
it when I see it". Well anyway, a reporter and cameraman came to my place
to do a story on Qld ASWA for the show "Extra" which is shown only in Qld
just before the news on Ch 9. Now that they've done the story I guess I can
tell everyone!

The reporter Doug Murray interviewed us individually and of course we'd all
like to give him some better answers, but the pressure was on! I was filmed
looking hopefully up at the sky for good weather (they made me do it) for
about 3 mins and we were also filmed in the computer room looking at
data/photos and also looking at a photo album. They made me do something
with an umbrella that will be totally embarrassing I'm sure.

Anyway we made sure the reporter had the exact URL of the ASWA site, and how
much the subscription is etc.

The show should be on later this week (Extra is on weekdays and starts at
5.30pm) in Qld only. I'll tell you all when I'm told the exact time its
going to be on.

Regards

James Chambers

The pie shop has changed owners, which is probably the reason.

Thanks
Michael

Hi Greg and everyone,

While using the widest aperture will acheive a more highly exposed shot, it
certainly is not a 'mistake' to use a different aperture. I guess that's where
it becomes an art, and individual taste will determine the exposure you want
(within the limits of your camera)!

A wide aperture will certainly give you the most amount of lightning branch
detail, but you may want your main channel to look thinner purposely, so you
would use a smaller aperture. Another use for stopping down would be if the
lightning activity is close. Using a wide aperture will often over-expose the
shot, when it's the detail in the main channel that you want to retain.

But, as always, it's a matter of personal taste. I thought photo number 5 was
pretty awesome too, so good on you! :)

Cheers!

Marty.
