Marty

thanx for the advice. As I mentioned before the lightning was quite a
distance away so I probably should have opened the appeture a bit more.
Its still a learning experience for me. This is only my second attempt
at lightning photography so I guess I'll improve with time. If you
havent already seen my first attempt goto:

http://strikeon.com.au

and look in the previous section. Its called "Greg's First". I was
seriously lucky with this shot :-)

Regards

Greg

Marty and all,

I agree entirely with you about choosing different apertures for different
situations.

The other day I was getting lightning flashing within 2 km and I was getting it on
film.

I (not through choice as I forgot to set it otherwise) had it set at 5.6 or 2 stops
down.

To have the shutter open right up on that type of lightning with a 100 asa film
speed is going to mean the lightning channel is over exposed to the nth degree.

But I have caught very close lightning with the aperture fully open on 100 asa
negatives here

http://strikeone.com.au/close/close.htm
and this is not over exposed except the lightning channel itself.

It really comes down, as you say, to what you want to get out of a lightning
strike.

Personally to me a lightning strike that has no depth of field (i.e. no foreground)
is out of balance and not as appealing. Hence I am more inclined to go for
landscape as well as lightning and keep the aperture open more.

and also I am not too concerned about the thickness of lightning as that actually
adds to the overall appeal from other peoples point of view anyway. Showing people
the "fattest" strikes always seem to get there attention more than the thin ones.
This is brought out in the fact that a lightning strike I took that was out of
focus seems to be the more popular one simply as it is fatter in looks.

The issue with Greg's lightning photos is that when you look at the negative the
area around the strike (the landscape) has not been developed. You are not able to
see the difference between the individual frames.

It is this part I was explaining to him. You need to make sure that the film around
the strike is also exposed enough otherwise you suffer graininess when you try to
enlarge it as the crystals have not formed properly.

All up the photo in question is very nice on computer and an achievement in itself.
But Greg will come away with this a better lightning photographer and I really
admire his attitude that there is lots to learn in this field.

I still am learning how to get that "Perfect" shot as well.

I will tell you all whether I can celebrate a unique lightning strike I caught the
other night on film when I get them back today.

I have learnt the hard way to never count your chickens before they hatch when it
comes to thinking you got it and actually getting it.

Regards

Hi all,

There appears to be some strong potential for some pretty active
storms around Southern/SE NSW this afternoon.

The congestus bubbling up over the ranges shows some quite
rapid updrafts reaching to around 6km - so far they are fairly
short lived and not yet becoming storms. The thing that impresses
me is the velocity of the updrafts within the congestus. There
is also quite a bit of shear (in speed more than direction)
evident at the upper levels - with a moderate wind ~15-20km/hr
from the north at the surface).

The out of window judgement is that an interesting afternoon
is likely in southern NSW.

This judgement is slightly tempered by the models only showing
CAPE of 600 and -2 LI's for later this afternoon.

Patrick

PS Canberra has experienced or had Cb's visible every day now
for the last seven. It is looking like a pretty good start to
Spring with the BoM outlook for the next 7 days continuing
the unstable trend.

I just caught a glimpse of these from Gordon at lunch.
Very hard looking towering cumulus so it looks as
though there will be some cells developing a little
later on today. Certainly it is quite warm and the
NEer is bringing in some moisture (RH at Badgerys
Creek was 63% at around 1:30pm).

Hello again.

Congestus south west of us seems to be sorting itself out. The BOM has
tacked on:

Remaining mainly fine with lengthy sunny periods in the coastal districts.
A
few showers on the ranges and there is a risk of isolated thunderstorms
developing on the ranges later in the afternoon and may affect far western
parts of the area

I think those in Sydney's west may see something later.
Yesterday Matt Smith and myself went thru the footage of the Sydney Storm of
last wednesday. Some great shots. A report will be up soon, as there is alot
to cover.
Also don't forget NSW ASWA Members meeting Saturday 9th October 5:30 approx.
More will be posted later, but it will be great. Heaps of stuff to talk
about, re: recent activity, photos and videos. Shall be great.

Where is the next meeting , when, what time and is there any thing planned for

Hi Everyone,

There is currently a very intense storm cell just to the north of Bowral.
Been showing pink on the radar for at least an hour and twice went into the
purple briefly (3:10 and 3:40 pm). Went and took a pic of it from Blaxland a
few minutes ago and there was an impressive looking updraught at the back of
the storm.

I have been watching this one on radar as well
Matthew. It appears to be a nice multicell and each
updraft seems to put out 100mm+ /hr for a brief
period.

Im a little surprised that no severe storm advice has
been issued for the area.

If you look to your north there is another cell (weak) though, but it is
still another one to look at..

Paul,

Why didn't you ask me personally about any problems you are having with the radar
and also email your state rep personally about the time for the next meeting or
look for it at the bottom of the weekly newsletter that comes out every Sunday on
this channel.

The list is not a complaints arena and if you are having problems talk to the
appropriate people individually. You sure won't get my back up like you have doing
it in a more personal manner.

The solutions you might need re the radar.

If you are using ie3 get rid of it. It has more security bugs than i could hope to
go into detail here and it will not run the radar site.

Netscape 3 has no problems as far as I can tell.

Netscape 4 and ie 4+ has no problems as far as I can tell either.

If you are at work and you are unable to get radar from there, try connecting
"directly to the internet" and not going through the proxy as this is where the
problem lies.

You can change this from the menu in netscape

edit->preferences-->advanced-->proxies-->direct connect to the internet--->ok

Microsoft ie I am not so sure about but I think you do it through the control
panel under internet.

Any version of browser earlier than netscape 3 or ie 4 will not work and any other
type of browser is a lucky guess on whether they work or not.

If any of these solutions do not work then I suggest you email me personally with
them.

I do reply :)

It ran out of puff around 4pm, the remains of the anvil drifted over the
Illawarra, but no rain. I could not see the rear end when it was active, but
I would not mind betting that a little hail fell.

What we need now is the next trough to be slightly further north than
predicted and we could see another 1-2 days of activity.

Hello folks,

Some time ago I introduced myself to the list, as a newcomer and announced
my project web site - it has suffered from massive server problems in
Sydney which have been sorted out, and the site is up again for now, tho'
likely to be on the move soon to a server in Brisbane.

For photos of severe weather, unusual cloud, sunsets and unusual weather
events such as snow in Queensland, go to the photo galleries:

http://www.schools.ash.org.au/paa/photogallery.htm

There are 6 complete, small galleries, which have 8-10 pics in each,
optimised and shrunk in size for faster downloads (best for school
classroom use). Featured in gallery one: 'glaciating' supercooled clouds
related to the
Bergeron-Findeisen process, quite a rare sight... see for reference:
http://rsd.gsfc.nasa.gov/912/geerts/cwx/notes/chap09/findeisen.html

I can forward on explanations from several meteorologists of this type of
phenomena for those interested.

 8-) Help?

If anyone can offer a photo for use at the PAA site, it would be greatly
appreciated by the classes from across the world involved in the project. I
have indeed been greatly impressed by the photos I have seen recently taken
by people on this list. We will of course credit you, link to your site and
make it perfectly clear that copyright remains with you and that reference
needs to be given to your work in student projects which use the photo.

Included also at the site: weather writing, jokes, folklore, art and much
more... follow the 'for students' link from the home page.

Eyes to the skies, as always....

Hi all, I thought that some of the model junkies on the list may be interested in the weather futures trading that has just been established by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Basically it involves trying to work out the probabilities of temperatures being normal or above/below average for certain periods of time for four US cities.

If you have confidence in your forecasting abilities and some spare - and I mean SPARE - cash, then this could be the way to make some money.

The URL is: http://www.cme.com/weather/weather.html and is an interesting site just to see how it all works and to consider the possibilities....
