Hello,

The storms just slipped by here - Elimbah (Caboolture area) South East Qld
with a few downpours a little lightning and thunder - looked more promising
than it turned out to be - looks like Ipswich/Brisbane Valley got the worst
of the storm.

One average photo is all there is to show - winds carried all our cloud
cover and storm away toward the south, and the storm that was left for us
came on too late - after dark. 8-/

Cheers,

Sel Kerans.

Hi all,

Further to what I mentioned last night, 20,000 homes were blacked out.
Ipswich and western suburbs were the worse hit.

I received 23mm from the storms.

During the month of September, I recorded 64.8mm of rain - nearly double
the average of 33mm.

Just to put a dampener on it... Radar at 5:00pm showed RED in a cell
just to North of Ipswich (this is the one the BoM mentioned as being in the
Ipswich area), but it missed Mt. Crosby just 11ks directly due North of
Ipswich entirely. We did get some action from the second line at around
6:00pm when it came through, moderate lightning (av. 30 per min), mainly
multiple strikes (i.e, decaying storm stuff), 4 or 5 noisy close CG's (est.
150 to 400m) (one was quite pretty - almost chain lightning as it died
(maybe just my burnt out retinas )), moderate rain (16mm), no hail, no
wind at all. Not worth reporting to the BoM. I did get a rather fuzzy
photo earlier in the day of what at first glance appeared to be a
suspicious lowering & wall cloud way to the South of our ASWA meeting
place, at around 3:00pm - but it was probably just nicely shaped scud.

It is with great regret I report that the ASWA archive of BoM radar,
BoM msl charts and GMS5 (NPMOC) satpics ceased to be updated from Sat
Oct 02 5:20am AEST (199910011920Z) to Mon Oct 05 10:20am AEST
(199910050020Z). The update ceased when this computer ran out of
processes. This fault was caused by an experimental applications
manager (mrtg_logger) encountering a configuration problem then
leaving zombie (defunct) processes totalling over 1700. Eventually,
no more processes could be created. I recovered the computer by
killing the offending parent processes.

All requests prior to 199910011920Z and after 199910050020Z will
be serviced normally. This means that as promised last week, all
requests sent to me will be processed today and tomorrow.

Can anyone help with the recovery of ASWA's archive? Specifically,

1) I can recover most of the NPMOC gmsfull satpics from their
archive but some of these will be missing as would be the higher
resolution satpics of gmsd and gmsc.

2) I don't think that any radar can be recovered from another
source. I am not aware whether the BoM keeps an archive of radar
but they have provided selected images in the past. Does anyone
know for sure?

3) I was also wondering whether it is possible to obtain BoM MSL
charts from a source in the BoM or elsewhere for zero or a nominal
fee.

Hi all,

The reply that I made to Paul was actually intended for him personally and not meant
to be sent to the list. Somewhere it seems that it sent it to the list anyway
without me knowing about it. So I apologize to Paul and others for sparking it off
like I did.

But it did encourage that interesting email from Michael S and I can whole heatedly
agree with his point of view as being a web developer. It gets to a point where
backward compatibility affects the main stream too much.

Currently (according to the counter on the ASWA Inc. site), 95.5 % of hits are from
the browsers Microsoft IE 4, 5 or Netscape 3, 4. That leaves a group of about 4
people (statistically) in ASWA that use incompatible browsers with the radar
section.

The degradation to the overall site if I were to make it work with the "older
browsers" is quite drastic. It inevitably makes more sense to enjoy the site as it
is now and encourage people with older computers to run at least Netscape 3.

Regards

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

.......$#(*# at $)(* at #&%%&^! at #&** at (#()())$&#&^ at %# at #&*&^$&# at

I didn't save any radar from yesterdays activity in SE QLD thinking that
i would be able to request it from the ASWA archives.. oh well, it
couldn't be helped..

Did anyone save any radar at all of the storms in SE QLD/NE NSW
yesterday/last night? If so it would be greatly appreciated if it could
be donated to BSCH There was a fantastic bow in the line of storms
that moved through Brisbane in the early evening.. it would make a
fantastic event loop.. or even if you have one or two images in your
cache! Anything at all!

BTW Michael, i was told by someone at the BOM that they do keep an
archive of radar/whatever from some events.. given that the storms were
severe and they had warnings out all afternoon i'd say they would have
the radar images archived.. this is just for Brisbane though..

I've got virtually all the Brisbane images up to 09z for yesterday only
(4th) and all the Grafton to 3.20z when it died for the rest of the day.
I'll upload and let people know where to download from.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I have added a recent events report for the Storms in SE QLD yesterday..
Although there are no radar images up at the moment, i have just heard
that someone saved radar for most of the afternoon.. so once i get the
images i'll make up an event loop and add it to the report..

Tracker images will also be added by Thursday night..

Hi All,

Jimmy Deguara and Matt Smith chased all day yesterday but fialed to get
close enough to the action that for some reason shot about 400km further
north than the 99100312z AVN data predicted for 99100406z. Plenty of cloud
and a few weak imbedded cells and some heavy rain around Tenterfield late
in the arvo.

Seeing as though they were so close to me, I encouraged them to come down
the hills and stay over, so they did and arrived here (Wollongbar) at about
8pm. They were pretty tired but we checked the net and watched the tornado
show that was on channel 10 last night. This morning we again checked the
internet for any hope of storms, but it was obvious nothing would happen
today. We checked a few storm videos before meeting Halden Boyd at his work.

Halden works for ABC radio FM 2NR at Lismore. I half suspected he might nab
us for an interview so I was not surprised when the offer came! One of the
female journalists recorded Jimmy and I on the topic of Storm Chasing. It
will be broadcast at 10.15am tomorrow (6th) so I'll see if I can record it
to wav file. I think it went very well with both Jimmy and me speaking well
on the subject. There was a plug for ASWA and the ASWA web site. So, thanks
Halden!

cheers, Michael

You can download the brisbane and grafton images from here:

I have a few GMSD images but it wasn't all that spectacular.

If anyone has Brisbane radar images from 0900z then please advise.
