Evening all,

Well - I officially declare the Victorian chase season officially open.
Today's effort was pretty good. Thanks to some helpful advice from fellow
chasers in other states it was decided to head W to clear air. After a few
car swaps etc on the way we made it to sunny and clear Buangor where we
stopped for 30 mins to observe some BIG storms to the N. NW and W with new
ones developing in the SW while we waited. After several hundred
phonecalls with the 4 different mobiles we had we finally decided to head
further NW to Stawell then possibly Horsham if need be. We got another 5km
up the road and saw a sign for a lookout which we headed straight for and
we sat up there for about 45 mins watching as the storms approached and
passed us (one weaker one to the S and the stronger one to the N). We then
waited to see the developement on the back end of the cells to the N. We
could see a whole line of storms firing to the NW each one further NW
looking stronger than the next. Paul Yole and friend joined us up there
too and within ten minutes of them arriving I walked to a better vantage
point to be looking at an awesome looking wall cloud under a fresh updraft
about 25 km to our N. After lots of yelling and screaming and videos and
photos we decided that even though it didn't seem to be rotating it was
looking very impressive with prongs and all. As it should it became
embedded in rain within five minutes but was still visible through the
rain. The chase was back on. We all jumped in our cars and headed N
towards it (sort of). Through the trees we got closer views of a new wall
cloud which formed under the next new updraft but this one was less
impresive than the first and didn't have the same solid look to it. The
chase continued to somewhere near Joel Joel (can't remember the name and
the map is in the car still). From here we decided to head towards
Castlemaine with new growth in front (E), behind (W) and spectacular growth
along the line to the (N) which was awesomely lit up by the setting sun
(watch for the photos within the week). The line of storms heading E was
really moving (about 70km/h) and was pulling away from us after a few stops
for food, etc and the stuff to the N was too far away to chase in the dark.
Upon reaching Castlemaine Paul and friend returned towards Ballarat and
then home again (towards the new cells in the W) and our two cars continued
home towards Melbourne. We stopped for a passenger swap and food again at
a servo. between Kyneton and Woodend (Calder Hwy) where we watched the W
cells aproach with some nice lightning and shooting stars to boot. We left
there at about 8:40pm and I was home by 9:32pm - gotta love the ring road -
(thanks Jeff). After a quick check of the radar I decided I didn't need to
go anywhere to get a decent view of the line of storms approaching from the
W. A cell went red for a brief moment almost right over the CBD and there
was plenty of Green and Yellow approaching me. I watched it pass overhead
with a few CG's fairly close and some very heavy rain for a brief period
and two brief flurries of pea size hail. (It was pink on radar as it
passed over me). I attempted a few lightning photos and luck wasn't on my
side. The cable release is buggered and I have been too lazy to get it
fixed and this made it very difficult and I missd two (2) fantastic flashes
- one huge CC and the other a tuning fork shaped CG with two prongs merging
into one as they hit the ground. It serves me right for not getting it
fixed (and yes it's being taken to the camera shop tomorrow along with 3
films to be developed).

This is not a full report and if i get time tomorrow I will type up a
proper storm chase report and fill in the storm database.

BTW - it seems as though a few models are forecasting a similar system to
come through later next week as well - perhaps Friday. We shall see
though.

Thanks to Jane for driving and looking after Claire and updating us with
regular info and for putting the report up when I get it done and some
photos hopefully .

Thanks to all those people who rang and reported things to us during the
day - including Chris G, Clyve H, Kathy J, Paul Y, Jimmy D, anyone else
i've forgotten (?) and the BoM who rang US (yes they rang us!!!) with info
on the storms!!!!!!

SDS cured for a few days (if not weeks) after last night (6 hours of
lightning) and then todays effort!!!

Watch for the chase report on MSC over the next few days.

Andrew McDonald.

Just got this from my parents in Tassie this week, thought the list might
be interested.

"Guess what we saw from our kitchen window, a spout coming down from a
storm cloud. Don saw it and raced for his camera. He took some photos for
you. We watch it for a little while. It did'nt take long for it to form and
then it lost strength just as quickly. We were quite excited about it. Don
raced across the road to find a better position to photograph it. I
have the films in for development. We should get them tomorrow. We will
send you a copy".

Ill Post the pics when i get em

Hey MJ,
Here ppl's just a thought on the interview, maybe putting up as a wav is an
ok idea. But putting it up in an MP3 format would be better for those with
download restrictions as it would take up less room and be easier and quicker
to down load.
If you need a CD ripping program to do this just email me back will be able
to sort it out them for you. Just a thought that's all.

I agree andrew...the season has to be well open now.

After we left the Melbourne chasers at Castlemaine, we headed to Ballarat and towards the next line of storms coming through. Got to Ballarat and were surrounded by storms, stopped of and grabbed some munchies (Thank you Macca's) and as we left Ballarat, we drove through and intense rain shaft. Once on the opposite side of this, we had clear skies for the rest of the trip back to Murtoa, but could still see vissible flashes from the storms behind us for the rest of the trip home.

I would like to thank the Melbourne chasers, Jane, Andrew, Claire and Nick, and to anyone else who gave us info on the way.

I think next time though, we should just head to Avoca from Ararat instead of Stawell and my map skills need a little more work I think. *L*

Also, can you all please put up a report online. I hope to do it either today or tommorow.

Lets hope it happens like this again on Friday as I'm going to be around Portland and want some good shots over the water of lightning.

Paul.

ABC news article on the storms in the Riverina (south NSW) last night

 "Riverina facing clean-up after overnight
 storms"

The Riverina is facing a clean-up with an expected
large damage bill this morning, following storms across
the southern band of the region overnight.

Strong winds have ripped roofs off some houses in the
Jerilderie area, which was also hit with severe hail,
 along with Finley.

There are reports of some crop damage and shredded gardens.

Downed power lines saw blackouts in many areas, with some
homes and businesses without electricity for up to seven hours.

However, some areas around Griffith were missed by the storms.

Ricegrowers, looking to begin plantings, soon may see
some benefit from falls of around 30 millimetres across
the region, with allocations for Murray irrigators likely to
 rise as a result.

Its no wonder there is clean up there today!

Weather21 had reports from viewers last night of hail and strong winds. The
radar look impressive for pieces last night as the storms continually grew &
weakened. Hopefully the instability continues right towards the Coast so us
easterners (who havnt had a storm for weeks up here) can get some action!

Mornin' All,
Well done to those who chased yesterday, I look forward
to seeing your pictures.

Does anyone know of a good place to get my camera repaired? I've subjected it to
a fair bit of moisture recently and my aperture now sticks in the fully open
position (I assume it just needs a clean and oil). I use a Minolta manual focus
SLR. I'd like to get it fixed before we get any more storms like last night's!

Cheers,

Pete.

Hi every1,

Well, after the promising LIs and CAPE figures predicted on Friday it looked
like I wouldn't have to chase far on the Saturday, and I was right!
About 12.30 p.m. Saturday afternoon the first cells formed to my NW and I
hurriedly positioned myself at the lookout on Mt. Wycheproof. The cells were
isolated at that stage and the air was very warm. Cells were shallow however
although vertical development was exceptionally fast (I saw one cell form
from Cu to Cb with lightning in twenty minutes!)
Between 12.30 p.m. and 3 p.m. a total of three Cbs with attendant lightning
(about equally cc and cg though not intense) passed overhead. The cloud
bases were very cluttered however, and any photos I took will probably have
no definite features although there were some nice lighting contrasts.
After 3 p.m. (and only a trace of rain) the sky cleared to the west and
north and way off in the distance I could see the main cloud band thickening
nicely. By 6 p.m. new cells had started to form and there was a nice light
show to my west until about 9.30 p.m. when rain started to fall. Overnight
Saturday a total of 12 mm. fell to 9 a.m.
Checking the LIs and CAPE again Sunday morning showed that the figuress
seemed even better than for Saturday and if the Sun would only peek out
chances were good for more storms. However, by 2 p.m. we had had a further
14.8 mm. of rain and little solar insolation to kick things off.
Then, just as I'd given up hope of anything photogenic, a beautiful roll
cloud cannoned its way from the NW directly over me (with no damn film left
:(( ) and presaged a short, sharp Cb with impressive (although short-lived)
cc and cg lightning. All over in about twenty minutes and then the air
finally cleared by sunset.

All in all an impressive start to the season here, with a total of 27 mm.
for the event (crop-saving rain I can tell you).
News reports this morning indicate that severe hailstorms swept across crops
west of Kaniva towards the SA border although no hail was reported anywhere
near here.

Looking forward to later this week (fingers crossed)
Cheers,
Kevin from Wycheproof.

Pics from yesterday's storm chase (625km) will be up tonight if I get half a
chance - including a pic that I just can't quite decide where to put - maybe
the chase report from yesterday......maybe the humour page......maybe the
mugshot page - you'll have to check it out & help me decide (especially if
you're a Monty Python fan!)...enough said - I'll let you know when it's up.

Many thanks to the people who kept us up to date this weekend with what was
happening where - and especially to Jeff from the Bureau for his help in
pinpointing the dryline & its movement later in the afternoon/evening
yesterday.

Well looks like my finger-crossing may have worked...

Looking west it is looking promising at this stage. Dark rain free bases, hard
to tell if there is an anvil or not due to high humidity & associated haze.
Anyone else got any action?

Hmm interesting. Typical though its in the hunter as usual!

When was the last storm you had? we had one here on the 25.9.99 - that was the
last one. Considering its spring - Im surprised at the low average. Even
Melbourne has had more!

:-(

Hi everyone,

Just read below and hopefully this may add some credit to the observation
of the tornado near Boorowa.

Andrew Treloar's message is below.

You could always move to the southern Illawarra and gloat that you have not
heard thunder this season yet. !

The media both here and in the USA have suddenly become intensely interested
in ASWA!!!!!

At the ASWA meeting in Melbourne on Saturday, I got a call from Donna
Tolbert of NBC in California who was trying to find someone to interview
regarding the 1983 Melbourne dust storm for their "World's Most Amazing
Videos"!!!!! I've given her Dane Newman & Rod Aikman's email & mobile phone
numbers (only) - so you 2 guys should expect a phonecall probably tomorrow.
They want to have a camera crew in Melbourne either Wednesday or Thursday
this week .......don't forget to wash your ASWA shirts and point the logo at
the camera if you agree to be interviewed

Hey all, Paul from Brisbane here :-)

I have made a little page where I will be putting all my observations in
such as min and max temperatures, rainfall and thunderdays.. I'll also
have a little weather summary at the end of each month. It's only new,
at the end of November I will have a bigger summary since it will be a
full month. Here's the URL if anyone is interested():

Hi All,

Finally we have more typical spring weather, clear sky, hazy & smokey, very
warm and dry with NW breeze, & NE ASB. Cracked the bug three-oh at Mt.
Crosby on Sat, 29.5 on Sun & 31.0 today. This is the warmest since Mar 22.
20.0 outside at 11:00pm, 24.0 inside with 63 R.H., and all Windows still
open! Have new neighbours from down South (Phillip Island) - I notice that
at 11:00pm they still have their A/C on... Hmm, wonder what they will do
when the hot weather comes?

John.
