Highest in the area was 29.8mm at Willow Tree (south of Tamworth). Of course, there are a lot of non-real-time stations which we won't see data from until the end of the month. Exactly where, in relation to Mullaley (distance and direction) was the report? I'd be interested in following this up further. I'd consider 300 points credible, but not 300mm. I'll check the Probable Maximum Precipitation maps in the library to see what they have to say. (Most people would be staggered by how high the PMP values are - the 72-hour PMP for the Melbourne catchments is somewhere in the vicinity of 1000mm!). Brisbane Airport (80mm) seems to have got the top total. Well paint me green and call me gumby but DAMN they look good. I can't access the AVN site ATM so I am going on MRF figures and MRF has an area of -7 to -8 in North Central Victoria at 10pm Sunday night (imagine what they would be during the day). I currently have to work Sunday night but if things look good tomorrow morning I am going to get out of work and chase Sunday (if i can have a car). Basically I'm after a general opinion on what others think of the situation (and those with AVN can give us (me) and idea of LI's and CAPE during the day sunday). Any information would be greatly appreciated. For those of you who have read the chase report from the 10/10 you probably would've seen the bit where I mention that chases should be organised earlier if possible - I am trying to organise this one early so we can get some thinking happening. There is no certainty that I"m going to be able to get a car or get out of work yet but I thought people might like to know that the thought of a chase is there. BoM have a front effecting S Vic later in the day with a trough effecting the N of the state. LI's of -5 to -7 extend almost across the whole central area of the state on the 10pm map so it might be OK here in Melbourne too. Melbourne had a general thunderstorm warning issued this morning and a nice cell dumped some heavyish rain right on the CBD with Yellow and Green sitting on the city for about 20 mins. Not much happening now though. This morning I had a phone discussion with the chap who phoned in to the ABC yesterday afternoon to clarify the rainfall situation at Mullaley west of Gunnedah. Zavier Martin says the rainfall was in fact 300 points, or 75mm in 40 minutes, which is more realistic. He says the cloud base was 400 feet as the storm approached, and it was roaring before it hit just after 1.30pm. The first band of hail was 1cm-2cm and lasted for 5 minutes, followed by a short break, then intense hail larger than golf balls with some bigger ones amongst it. There was another break and then 5 minutes of the smaller stuff again. It then rained and the storm passed. Wheat crops were flattened, and trees were stripped of leaves. Grass was mown down and there was damage to the ridge capping and guttering on his house, and damage to vehicles. He also told me he did NOT observe any funnels, and he knew what they were because he witnessed one many years ago. There was lightning and thunder as the storm approached, but he did not see of hear anything as the storm as overhead, agreeing that it was probably because of the hail noise and the white-out situation. He told me he took one photo during the "white out", and has followed it up with damage pictures this morning. He is providing these to ASWA, and Anthony Cornelius is calling him to take down an ASWA Severe Storm Report. I hope this clarifies the situation....I believe Mr Martin when interviewed on the ABC soon after the storm hit might have been a little excited about all of the action surrounding him!! In fact, we do have lots of possums and fruit bats which regularly fry themselves, but Energex have never stooped so low as to blame them for a power outage. By the way this does not mean I believe Thylacines to still alive, it is just to point out like Paul Mossman said, we have to welcome all reports. Michael > You make some good points Paul. The 132kv transmission lines in the Illawarra transverse some rugged escarpment country. There used to a least half a dozen maintenance crews back in the days of the Electricity Commission, I don't think anybody denies that there was a lot of dead wood and some plain lazy employees, but now under Integral Energy there is but half a dozen people. Last time I drove up Macquarie Pass I noticed that the trees have started to encroach severely on the lines and that the 4WD access tracks are starting to overgrow.
