Just as a sideline...................I was driving to Katoomba tonite (Tues)
and was stopped by hail at both Woodford and Wentworth Falls at between 8
and 8.30pm. Some electrical activity as well.

Mj here well John i have seen green flashes/lightning on numerous occassions
here in perth now. and it hasn't always been a cg that has produced it either,
some really good cc can cause it also. The cg occurances are better tho, i
think it is more to do with the hail i n the upper reaches of the thunder
cloud/storm that is hitting a transformer. This is based on what info i have
been told and from what i have observed when i have seen green lightning in the
past, most often i see it nearly directly of just after the main lightning
strike and it normally originates from the top of the thunder cloud/storm that
produce the lightning strike.

Hopes this helps.

I know this isn't weather related, but I just received a WX-Talk email with an attachment called happy99.exe. From memory this is a virus, so check to see if it's attached and if so, delete it immediately. Do not save and run it or ya comp will end up with all sorts of probs.

Follow-up on my last post:

All models except the ECMWF have thicknesses in the 530-532 range
in Melbourne on Friday night (and the EC is 534). Most are no longer
pushing the coldest air terribly far northwards, so NSW probably
won't see serious action (although I'd still expect snow on the peaks).

The EC is the interesting one, with a major cold pool over SA on
Friday/Saturday in a SE flow with ridging south of Tasmania (a
situation similar to that of October 1995 which brought snow to 200
metres in the Flinders Ranges), then a surface low developing over
the weekend in southern NSW, with a spectacular cold pool attached
to it by Sunday. It's sufficiently way-out that I don't expect it
to happen, but it will be fun if it does...

The idea that ASWA becomes a cult or religious organisation to
remove the need to become "GST able" on July 1, 2000 has thus
been supported by those very actions of the Federal Government
to force the BoM into a "user-pays" service provider modus
operandi by virtue of progressive budget cuts. The idea that
certain BoM weather products are only made available to a select
group of people who can pay could be used to ASWA's advantage
but I'd rather see them all freely available...

> Yes, we do pay taxes, yet we have to pay for the information!!!

I wonder if "freedom of information" legislation can be used to
force access to taxpayer-payed-for information?

Look, there are many people who might read this and it's OK
to vent some steam about brain-dead policies. No political party
is innocent of this. What does it take to highlight the waste?
Another 50 or more MRI scanners? What if it were a few doppler
radar setups instead? BoM has to really plan for this stuff and
it takes a $1.6B hailstorm to relax the cost-recovery policy
just a bit? Makes no sense at all...

Financial arguements aside, the only way forward is through
openess. Closed policies only serve to lock up mostly good
stuff because it is thought to have some intrinsic value...
Bovine excreta!!! I know that there is some fantastic weather
& climate research going on in the BoM and the last thing I
want to see is some Federal Minister thinking that our weather
and climate research/operations can be outsourced to some
US-based giant. The only way around this is to weld the BoM
into the niche of this part of Earth such that they cannot be
touched because the brains and brilliant ideas want to stay
and work right here in Oz. The value is not the products, it's
the brains, the people that own them and their new ideas. The
best way to prove it is to open the products and info right
up so that people can make real use of it every day and thus
really improve it...

Oh...I forgot. Ultimately it's public support that can ensure
any organisation's prosperity, public or private...Look no
further than the recent Victorian State Election for an example
of this.

Hi Everyone

I have put my photos/report up of the chase myself and Daniel Weatherhead
went on up into the Hunter Valley (NSW) on Monday. As usual the scans are a
little dark, its just my scanner, but the photos tell the story. I had to
limit the photos i wanted to put up, so only the best ones are there. Alot
of the average ones people can see on the November Chase, or at NSW ASWA
meetings.

http://www.braenet.com.au/~disarm look under "1999" then "October 18"

Speaking of the chase ive only had 1 application form. Please get these to
me ASAP!!! I have to organise cars etc for people. Please go the the
members are of the ASWA site for details, and my address is there to post
off your application form.

Thanks !

Great stuff Matt,

I am glad you guys had a chance of going up there as that was what I would
have done. Some excellent pics too. Can't wait to see the video footage and
the actual photos. Personally, I would have moved westwards towards the
Denman area. Michael T and myself have watched these areas with interest.

Nevertheless, you had a great time and I am jeolous I wasn't there. I
almost went up to tell you the truth after school! But without taking a day
off, I couldn't do this.

And congratulations from me, too, Michael. Now is the time to start
thinking through the excuses necessary to get out of the house for a
quick chase. "Just popping down to the store to get some milk, dear"
won't satisfy for long.

Yes Laurier.

He then comes back a few hours later and says " I've just made cheese with
the milk I bought!! Hope you like it."

Weatherwise, the weather is starting to shape up for more of the same in
E-NSW. Now that we have cold air aloft and higher level winds, all we need
is a trigger and things are going to go wild. If things happen on Friday, I
am out on a chase and then stay overnight etc... Hopefully more interesting
stuff on Saturday as well but I will wait on the models and what it decides.

One thing I can say this season is that the jets are passing through Sydney
for a change unlike the last season where it remained to the north. I will
enjoy this weather for as long as it lasts.

I aim to do one chase from Lithgow NE into the Hunter this season. I see so
many storms form in that area and drift NE. Remember last year there was a
terrific hailstorm that drifted NE from Mudgee to the hunter at 3am in the
morning.

We've had interesting weather with the birth of our 3 sons...

Matt at 7:25am on 3/6/1993. Cold front preceding. Later a really mean
cold outbreak on coming home 10 days later.

Tim at 7:48pm on 2/9/1995 heralded the end of a long winter drought
spell for Sydney. Rain started falling with 5 mins of Tim's birth.

Stephen at 6:21am on 2/5/1998. I don't remember the weather as the
birth was so traumatic but there was a storm accompanying a cold
front just before labour started.

There have been some ideas that a drop in barometric pressure
may trigger human birthing processes. In each of our son's
birth, this was the case either before or during labour. This
may well be just a coincidence.

I suppose there's a high likelihood of thunder and hail storms in eastern
Australia when an out of season outbreak of cold southerly air moves into
lower latitudes. This scenario seems to be quite common during La Nina
springs in NZ, such as the spring of 1996, when hailstorms damaged crops in
many areas from late October.

Forecast northwesterly with plus 20 degree temperatures failed to arrive
today - instead we had a 15 degree max in a cloudy northeasterly, but we
should have a warmer, sunny day tomorrow. At least it's warmer than last
week, with its wintry southerly outbreak and (light) snow on the high
country.

Hey Paul, everyone..

Saturday on the gold coast is likely to be wet and stormy.. Sunday is a
bit iffy, could clear up.. after Sunday a fine spell is possible until
the next front and trough probably Wednesday or Thursday of next week..

These upper level systems are very unpredictable IMHO.. anything could
happen.. and normally does..

Keep an eye on these forecasts.. apart from forecasting what is going to
happen, we also explain what COULD happen..

Excellent, thanks Ben & Anthony.

How current is the image? It's currently 11:20pm and the time on the image is
07:52. Is it only updated during lightning activity? I had a quick look around
the web site for help in this but couldn't find any.

Marty.
