Hi everyone,

Could someone give me all the details on the Nov/Dec NSW/SE QLD chase? I need
stuff like departure date, duration of trip, etc. If I can get time off work, it
will probably only be a few days, and I'd need to hook up with someone else who
has a car, as I don't have my own. I am really keen to come along, but I'm not
even sure whether I can get time off work, but the info would be helpful. I'm
not yet a member of ASWA, but would be glad to become one if I can realistically
join the chase.

Thanks.

Marty.

Hi all

I've been pleasantly surprised by a storm that has moved over Brisbane and
coastal suburbs. For an hour now its had maximum reflectivity, and hail has
been reported at the Brisbane Airport. Not sure about hail sizes etc but as
I said, it's certainly a nice surprise. Some pretty good lightning too and
heavy falls likely.

Hey James, Everyone..

When i called the BOM the forecaster on duty was just being briefed
about the storm.. but he said the airport recorded 70mm (Laurier or
Blair may be able to provide a breakdown - my guess is it would have
been in a hurry).. hail (small he thinks) and a max wind gust of 38
knots, or around 75 km/h .. not too shabby really..

The next few days will be interesting..

Hi James and all,

What a teaser it was for me - when the cell originally split from a
large shower complex (on an interesting tangent, it formed from a large
shower, that split into two, with one going north and then collapsing,
and this one travelling south, and then strengthening - I probably
shouldn't read into this too much, but SRH was 120, and max SRH was
140...)

Anyway, I got excited when it went into max intensity, and the cell was
originally heading my way, until it took a more E-ward path! I got some
gusty winds though (~33kn) and a few large drops of rain (mother nature
really wanted to tease me) and the closest strike was about 4.5km away.
But alas, nothing! The cell was very small, and rather intense though.

All up, a measily 0.5mm of rain...

PS - If you saved radar after 1:15am, can you email it to me - thanks

You need to be a member to access the details on the site, I'll extract
the files into a Word document for you, if anyone else requires the
same, then I send that to them too - but please email me personally.

Hmm.

Well at Mt. Crosby I was blissfully ignorant of the entire episode. This
must have been a real Bay thing. Just goes to show you can live in the
same city (well almost), and actually be on another planet altogether. :(

So, tell me someone, what was it like on the 7/1/1966 at 6:30 am?
My partner reckons the weather on that day might explain a few things
about me and my cold weather obsession. :-)

Lindsay P.
PS: I betcha the temp was below average and it was probably snowing on
the Central Tabelands!

Yes, I echo Don's remarks. Can't get to Canberra, shame really, would be
nice to test out the new car after the old Corona did a timing chain and
valve recently. At least I'll be right for next years snow chases and
maybe even one soon if this cold weather comes through. We had a ten
degree day last Saturday and 9.2 max on Tuesday and it was 4.5 degrees
and overcast/misty on Wednesday morning. Not bad for Late October.

Thank god our old car didn't break down on top of Mount Cannobolas two
two weeks ago whilst camping. Didn't find Terry Bishop either...

Morning all,

Well it looks like its gunna happen. Our second late season cold outbreak
in two years. Last year we had one on the 28th Oct. This years looks to
be the 22nd (tomorrow). The forecast is for cold southerly winds, showers
with local hail and snowfalls down to 600m. Min 8C Max 15C. In the outer
suburbs they are going for a min of 2C overnight friday too. From looking
at the sat pic this morning you can see the extent of the cold pool behind
the front. This could be a bit of fun. I might chase some coldies
tomorrow.

Gotta go - exam in 2.5hrs - but i had to check the weather this morning - i
couldn't resist.

Andrew McDonald.

Hey Andrew and any others in the know,

What are the roads like from Oberon through to Taralga and further
south?

We are holidaying in Burrill Lakes this summer and are thinking about
going south through Taralga then cutting back towards the coast near
Nowra or whatever. Any info would be appreciated.

Lindsay
PS: got a new little car and am wondering of the roads are okay for it.

Oberon to Taralga - this has got about 50km of gravel but is fairly
well-maintained. There's one very steep climb out of the Abercrombie
Gorge.

The dicier bit is getting across to the coast - from there the shortest
route is the Goulburn-Nerriga-Nowra road, but I believe the Nerriga-
Nowra stretch is fairly heavy going (I've never been on that part
myself). Another option is to go a bit further north and come down
to the coast through Kangaroo Valley.

Models are indicating a low to develop just off NSW coast on sat/sun , and
the BoM have also mentioned it here, with moderate to heavy falls possible !

http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDA01N00.txt

Hopefully if it forms it will give a good dumping along the NSW coast.

Oddly enough, the Sunday ECMWF run is a virtual carbon copy of the
situation that set up the great 1900 snowstorm in central NSW that
I'm going to spend a fair bit of time talking about tomorrow.
(Unfortunately, it's the second half of October, not the first week
of July). If this happens it has the potential to be a major flood
situation for southern inland NSW, especially as most of this area
is already running well above average for the last 2-3 weeks.

(On top of the snow, the rainfall amounts from the 1900 system
were spectacular - Taralga got close to 200mm in two days, Goulburn
117 in a day, and a few stations where Canberra is now were in the
80-100 range).

All models are going for a low somewhere. ECMWF keeps it inland, the
others have it off the coast to a greater or lesser extent.

Thicknesses in Melbourne on Friday night still looking like 532 +/- 2.
No real penetration of the seriously cold air into NSW, though.

And maybe my appearance three days before Canberra's lowest-ever
temperature (-10.0, 11/7/1971) explains something about an inordinate
interest in extreme temperatures...

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I have put up a radar loop of the storm that effected bayside suburbs of
Brisbane late last night/early this morning..

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/archiveddata/assorted/20-10-99/radar/localloop.htm

It was red on radar for 1 hour and 40 mins..

The official rainfall figure from the airport is 70mm in 15 minutes!!
That could be some kind of record? That's a 280mm/h rain rate..

Thanks to James Chambers and Ross Portas for saving the radar images
last night..

BTW, this storm developed over the western and southern suburbs of
Redcliffe (where i live).. i got 35mm all up last night, but probably
10-15mm from the storm that effected the airport..

Hi all, I think I was always going to be into storms and severe weather. My
b'day is 21/2/72, the day after a severe storm dumped 73mm fell one hour in
Melb CBD (as a small aside - this was also the date that Led Zep played at
Kooyong in Melb - my favourite group by a mile ever). There is a newspaper
shot from that day of Swanston Street in MAJOR flood. Also the fact my
initials are CG leads me to the above inclusion - :-)

Looking alright for some cold air CB's tomorrow and hopefully that ECL forms
for those of you on the east coast

This road is quite well maintained, but you'll get less gravel and
better scenery if you go farther west and take the Bathurst -- Trunkey
-- Crookwell route. There's about 10km gravel around Tuena, with
construction works, but the rest of the road is excellent, and the
country is looking magnificent at the moment.

For a gravel-free trip from Crookwell to Burrill Lakes, try Goulburn
-- Braidwood -- Batemans Bay -- Burrill Lakes. Very pretty descent of
Clyde Mountain, and the cafe (off the highway) at Nelligen is
recommended.

On 12 Sept 1956 in Sydney it was cloudy and cool with light showers late
afternoon / evening in a light southerly airstream. The city had 1 mm of
rain between 5 pm and 8 pm and the 8 pm temp was 52.2 F. Only 0.2 mm
more fell by 9 am the next morning but coastal suburbs had up to 14 mm
overnight.

Hi All, I normally dont jump into this conversation too much but i feel
that Melbourne could be in for quite a lot of action, we seem to be in some
really strong wind fronts at the moment. Im located in Moorabbin area, also
having a look at

http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/national/satellite/gvlatest.shtml

shows a great deal of cold fronts and it draws a lot of concerns to
overnight and tommorow forcasts, anyone in Melbourne like to comment????

Thanks,

However, the Navy Base guys drive like maniacs and it is the quick way to
Canberra for them.

There are also some weird people, last time I went along the road a car load
of yahoos were taking target shots with a rifle at old cans set up along the
roadside whilst driving along.

Hi all

Some nice mammatus pics in the wake of the severe storm on the 22nd
September 1999.

http://thunder.simplenet.com/chase/chase14.htm

Not really what you would call a chase, but I did not know where else to
place the pics.

Hi Lindsay,

The other guys have pretty much summed it up - sorry to be so slow. The only
unmentioned bit is between the Wombeyan Caves turn off (on the T-O road) and
Goulburn which is a breeze. Between the turn off and Abecrombie river is not
too much of a worry either but it is gravel.

Have fun.

Andrew.

Have a look at the Melbourne Storm Chasers "October Forecast, Outlook,
Discussion & Report page"
at http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/october.htm

There are a number of forecasts by local Victorian members there about our
current situation which you may find interesting.

They're great pics Michael. I would have definately taken some too from my
place and Towradgi beach if I had a camera. One of the best Mamma displays
I've seen. Ahwell, if you can't get the storms you might as well enjoy their
anvils!

Congrats too, Michael.

Andrew.
