Blair,

Firstly, thanks for letting the list know about the snow events seminar - I
found it most interesting (please let me know about getting copies of the
slides).

This station is about 2km to the west of where I live - so I will be
extremely interested in its figures. The vineyard is up on a ridge in
undulating country. The ground slopes away quite rapidly to the west, NW and
South (into the Molonglo and Murrumbidgee rivers). A bit further west (about
10km) the main Brindabellas rise up to 1200-1400m.

Based on what I record in Higgins, I would expect this station to record
more rain than the airport in most situations and particularly with any
event coming from the west; winter minima of 2-3 degrees above the airport
and Tuggeranong and maxima 1-2 degrees lower than the airport. Summer temps
may be slightly higher - it will be interesting to see.

Patrick

Yo Ben & Others,

I actually sent something like this email Sunday night, but it has so far
failed to turn up on the list...
So a retry...

After a wet and uncomfortably cold weekend in Sydney, I flew
Sydney->Brisbane Sunday night leaving Sydney at 7:30pm. I was fortunate
enough to score a window seat on the right hand side of the aircraft
(starboard), purely by chance. And what a sight!!! I was treated to the
second best display of storm activity I have seen from the air. A clean
unbroken line of storms lay out to sea and approximately parallel to the
coast from around Taree all the way to the Gold Coast. Every 20-30km along
the line was an intense cell with lightning ranging from 1 per 5 secs to 1
per sec, depending on the cell. The activity appeared to get better
farther North, with the best cell off Ballina. The anvils from all storms
merged together in a continuous cloud bank, with overshoots above the
intense cells. Interesting how different anvil crawlers look when you're
at 28,000 feet - they really highlight the boiling anvil tops :)

At 8:30pm, the line ended just off Southport, with a new cell showing
backshearing with a classic flanking line extending all the way back into
Moreton Bay. There was a full moon, so the entire structure was quite
clear and appeared beautifully superimposed in 3d relief on a moonlit
Ocean.

I believe this storm line was an extension of a quite nice guster and rain
curtain which came through the North Shore in Sydney around 3:15pm, and
which to me appeared to represent a cold front, delivering a quick
temperature drop with winds backing SW. The Sunday 12UTC IR Sat Pic, shows
this line having moved well out to sea, with the Northern most extension
evident as a storm line crossing the coast South of Fraser Island.

Meantime it is interesting to note that while Ipswich may have gotton some
nice hail on Sunday, nothing materialised at Mt. Crosby 11km north. In
fact, after the emphatic forecasts of the previous week, from both the BoM
and (sigh) the BSCH site, for showers tending to rain periods with storms,
lasting at least 24 hours (originally Thursday, then Friday, the Friday
night/Saturday), my 7 day rainfall figure for Mt. Crosby to 9:00am this
morning is a humungous 0.0mm. Not a measurable drop. But of course I was
in Sydney, which is where it did rain, in fact it pissed down. Maybe I am
a rain god after all...

John.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Just when i thought the storms had cleared, a line of electrical storms
has developed in line NE of Brisbane.. the line cuts the coast around
the northern end of the Sunshine coast, extends NW into the Wide Bay and
also extends SE into northern Moreton Bay.. a storm on the northern end
of the line is truly electrical with very frequent lightning and some
awesome anvil crawlers (i even observed a CG striking OUTSIDE of the
storm from the top of the anvil!!!!).. some storms also developed
further on the southern end of the line after 9pm, and in no time at all
one of the storms had a very large overshoot and the lightning was just
going spastic with tonnes of anvil crawlers and a few strong Cg's
observed (i am a considerable distance from these storms)..

90% of the lightning is in cloud or anvil crawler lightning.. the
tracker is picking up 90 Cg's every 5 minutes at the moment (10:30pm)..
but if it picked up all lightning it would be showing in excess of 500
per 5 minutes..

It has calmed down a little now (the storm on the northern end of the
line is still going strong though).. but the whole line remains quite
active.. they could go all night..

All radar, sat pics and lightning tracker images are being uploaded to
BSCH as i write this email (over 12 meg worth).. the sat pic loop really
shows the storms well..

Don't worry i didn't get very much at all either (about 3mm or so from
the whole system).. it was VERY hard to forecast though.. AVN performed
extremely poorly for us in SE QLD.. Anthony worked the LI to be -10 and
CAPE 3000 on Sunday (and the sky reflected this instability), and AVN
had forecast barely a fraction of this.. and even the analysis did not
show this (this is not uncommon unfortunately).. meanwhile we had 2
(probable) supercells in 24 hours..

This next system for us tomorrow and Thursday could be a good one
though.. the last AVN forecast i saw (AVN raw data is down at the
moment) had -7 and -8 LI's in the SE quarter of QLD, with 2000 CAPE and
lots and lots of precip Wednesday afternoon and overnight Wednesday..
the wind profile is also quite nice, so i wouldn't be surprised at some
very nice storms around Wednesday afternoon and evening..

Rain is looking possible overnight Wednesday as well.. we mentioned this
in the forecast discussion last night.. and today the BOM forecasts
mention rain for us..

Hey Everyone

This is just to let you know the reason why you didn't receive a weekly
newsletter via your IN box on Sunday Night. As I am the editor of this
newsletter, I have now decided to make this newsletter a fortnightly thing.

I have been having trouble getting people to give me information, as it
seems to be emails the have to with the ASWA seem to be going straight to
the aus-wx list again. It is very disheartening for me on occasions when I
ask each week for people to send me something for the newsletter even if it
just to say what there weather has been like and when it comes to writing
up the newsletter on a Sunday night I have no information for it all, after
being promised by numerous people they will email me something in.

PLEASE if you have something anything at all send it to me at
astrolady99 at netscape.net do not hit the reply button on this email. This
will be the last time I get down on my hands and knees begging for people
to help me out.

Yours Sincerely

Kathryn Jolly

Hey all

Small Cell just moved over my house bringing a brief squall with heavy rain
and a bit of small winter type hail, certainly was welcome to see.

Plenty of cold air Cb's over southern Vic as an upper level trough moves
through. Radar is showing plenty of cells around and this is backed up by
sat pic which shows a well defined cold air pool over southern vic.

bring it on

Nick

For us, the saying "slow as a wet week" doesn't actually apply (as I
suddenly realised while describing the speed of a 286)...maybe we should
assist with the development of the English language by redefining some of
the sayings.....

we could have.........
slow as a Bight anticyclone
slow as a dry week
slow as a stratocumulus chase day

help!!!!! - more please....
if you need inspiration try this

Melbourne's answer to Rooty Hill!! Location: Melways 44 K1 off Yarra Boulevard north of the eastern freeway. Park at the top of the hill where the road bends to the right (if coming from the south) - from here you can look from NW across the city skyline to the SW, and to the NE. Walk across the road, up the short, steep dirt path & head for the black trig marker at the top of the hill (~200m). Views from SE round through NW to SSW. Pros: ice cream van parked on bend in warm weather at weekends, roadside parking available Cons: a couple of black wattles to the N that will die hopefully very soon , possible snakes in warm weather 2. Corio airfield lookout (NW of Geelong) Location: Melways 221 F3 Viewing tower - (off Plantation Road) Pros: 360degree views Cons: graffiti? 3. Toolern Vale - Black Hill Road (S of Sunbury) VicRoads Country Directory 78 C3/B2 (off Couangalt Road) Pros: pull off areas on both sides of the road, sealed View from E - N - W 4. One Tree Hill - Ararat VicRoads Country Directory 56 G6 Pros: stunning 360degree view, sealed to the top Cons: still thinking about this one.....haven't found any yet Jane ------------------------------------------------------- Jane ONeill ASWA - Victoria Australian Severe Weather Assocn (ASWA Inc.) East coast lows are notoriously tricky to forecast, they virtually spin up overnight and their placement in relation to what weather you will get makes them a forecast nightmare. As little as 100km can mean the difference between onshore winds and heavy rain or offshore dry winds and sunshine. For example on Sunday morning when houses were again going under at Figtree, only 50km away to the NW was in sunshine. However your second paragraph pretty much sums it up, the public are simply not aware of the significance, and rely on media to pass the message on. Media tend to be haphazard about this, radio stations generally pass it on albeit often well after the event has passed, but I have yet to see TV outside the weather report to do such. One of the long term aims of the ASWA ( Australian Severe Weather Association ) is to lift public awareness of Australian weather, particularly thunderstorms and other potentially severe situations. Perhaps you have some suggestions ? They're supposed to be some new kind of sophisticated thing which not only measures rainfall, but also the size of the raindrops. There's also supposed to be far more accurate anemometers as apparently the current one on the top of the bridge keeps failing in slightly windy conditions!
