Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I am trying not to write to many emails here.. but there is so much to
say!

I awoke at 5:30am this morning to see a storm on the border ranges with
a HUGE are of red for 40 mins, and red on radar in that cell for 70 mins
+ .. we like to see weak storms on the border ranges of a morning, as it
normally spells severe storms in SE QLD later in the day.. but a very
strong storm possibly dumping large or copious amounts of hail? I think
we could see widespread strong thunderstorms later on today in SE QLD,
some of these possibly being quite severe if the early morning action is
anything to go by..

I have uploaded a screen shot of the storm i am talking about:

Hi Ben and all,

It certainly does look good for us. We've got a lot more moisture than
yesterday, with DP's rising by 13C during the day to 21C last night.
This is somewhat similar to November 18 of last year. Severe
thunderstorms later on are definately on the cards - I personally wish I
could go chasing! The radio reported that Tenterfield, Casino and Texas
all received a "lashing" from storms o'night. AVN was forecasting -2
LI's for this area at this time. AVN is going for -6/-7 LI's to
Brisbane's SW later today.

There are already more showers and t'storms developing around the Moree
area as I type this out.

Looking good...

Jane, everyone,

Here's another one for you......

Mt Buninyong, 745m - 6km SSE of Ballarat. (Vic Roads directory 76G4, off Midland
Hwy)

Pros: Extinct Volcano ,
           360 degree views > 100km,
CFA observation tower open to public,
           Toilets,
            Sealed road to top,
            Open 24 hours.

Cons: Trees... you have to move around a bit to get those 360 degree views.

I viewed the storms of 22/1/99 from here, and could see the entire line of
storms from Maryborough to Mornington shown in this image....

Good morning everyone,

Just had a look at the 12 Z Brisbane sounding from last
night (and nothing else).
Very nice moisture in the lowest kilometre, and
my guess is that the atmoshere will look dry adiabatic
up to 750mb by late afternoon.

The problem: no cap + little shear.
The "no cap" scenario has already come up with the storm in
( http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/archiveddata/assorted/still.gif )

There might be plenty of convection and storms, but
the "really big boys" are unlikely to pop unless the
sounding experiences some dramatic changes in the
mid-levels (in nearly 24 hours that is quite
possible).

Anyhow, enjoy the semi-guaranteed festivities,

Harald

The shear isn't too bad, although directional shear isn't quite as
good. We rarely get the high SRH values that you get in the US though,
however there is a small 'jet streak' that is forecasted to be moving
over our area during today. This is fairly divergent at 400mb and
above. With 100kn shear around 200-300mb forecasted.

One thing that I've learnt though, is that the SRH values on the
sounding on Wyoming, are always different to the ones the BoM have, the
BoM SRH values that I get given are always higher, the same goes with
CAPE and LI's. So I'm not 100% sure about the reliability of the
soundings that we receive sometimes. The strength of shear appears
sufficient for at the very least, strong-severe multicellular growth
from experience of what I've seen in SE QLD.

The other problem as you mentioned, was the cap. These cells actually
didn't develop here, but rather out at Moree (400km WSW of here), and
moved over. We had a brisk NNE'ly wind o'night, with DP's around 21C,
so they had plenty of moisture to feed on, especially when they hit the
ranges. Another feature of SE QLD t'storms that I find odd after
reading many US chase reports, is that t'storms in the morning normally
(but not always) indicate severe t'storms in the afternoon. Nearly all
of the significant severe t'storm days that we have experienced, have
had cells developing early in the morning (sometimes even before
daylight). A classic example, was November 29, 1992 - of which an F3,
and an F4 tornado were recorded, 5 supercells occurred that day, some
reaching cricket ball + sized hail.

None-the-less, it's 8:36am here, and while the DP is still 21C, and the
temperature here is 25.3C with small breaks coming out of the cloud, I'd
be much happier to see this clearing very shortly. Sat pics do indicate
a very pronounced clearance coming through for us though, before another
line of developing t'storms.

Thanks very much for your valuable input, I'd be interested to see what
you have to say about this situation, compared with a typical US setup.

Intense looking bunch of storms over the area according to the Energex
tracker at 8:45am, one weakening storm over Tenterfield is being
followed by a rapidly developing cell about 40km to the west and,
further north, another is tracking east towards Toowoomba. Should be a
good day for Brisbanites.

BTW, Jerome, that's a great pic. I'll be watching that area of the world

The not so obvious hazards of storm chasing.

When Jimmy, Paul , Clyve and myself were at Stanthorpe last year awaiting
storms I took off on alittle walk to photo some wildflowers and came across
a snake, it was only 5-6ft away from me. But having grown up in an area
where snakes were a common sight I was not worried, I even got a picture of
it, if anybody is snake fan I will post to you.

Yo Ben,

Having looked at your nice animation (pity about the missing 4 hrs or so on

This meant that all of the action was going to occur on the northern side of the cloud band (the warmer, inflow region). Right now, radar is indicating a massive line of showers and thunderstorms stretching about 700-800km, from NE/central NSW coast, to the central QLD coast. The main thunderstorms are from Gympie/Sunshine coast up to near Biloela. Tracker confirms all of this as you mentioned, with a record number (since I've been watching tracker anyway) number of strikes recorded in 5 minutes. That is a massive 838 lightning strikes (lightning tracker generally only picks up CG's too). Ben, Ross and Jason went chasing today, but to my knowledge did not see too much lightning. They may have been just a tad too far south to see it all, and the clouds/rain may have partially blocked it (this was still in twilight). We've had the odd flash of lightning, and rumble of thunder here from thundery rain, the best stuff is to the north. > Steve wrote: > > Big storm up at Brissy tonite, just had a look at the lightning page, > anyone in Brisbane online tonite with a camera? > Steve > > http://sselka.tripod.com > -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 020 From: "Steve" [sselka at ozemail.com.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: Re: aus-wx: Storm At Brisbane Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 20:58:29 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2014.211 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com we are about to get some more rain here again, I live 16km south of Casino , had near 50 mm today ,water everywhere, the grass is green and the cow is nice and fat Steve +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 021 From: "Steve" [sselka at ozemail.com.au] To: "severeweather" [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aus-wx: Question Re:Lightning Tracker Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 21:03:27 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2014.211 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com

Cannot even see a distant flash in the sky. Five minutes of heavy rain and that's about it. Although, Bundaberg might a storm soon. Don't be fooled by the lightning tracker image. The distance from top to bottom is close to 500 km. 81 strikes >5 over this distance is next to nothing. A good rule of thumb is to look at the number of 5 minute strikes verse 10 minute verse 15 minute verse 20 minute. If they are in descending order (ie, 100 within 5 minute, and 80 within 10, etc) you know the storm is building up. When the figures are in descending order then the storm is dying out. Mind you, it can turn around rather quickly. Colour radar is a better tool for predicting storms. The tracker is a good tool for predicting damage to the electrical network. As for the delay between the Internet and Austext, that is covered in the FAQ on the page. If you are wondering what a bad storm is. In the old days, when SEQEB owned its own tracker, the tracker database could only store 2000 active strikes. For a bad storm the database had to get flushed once or twice during the storm. Brief history: Lived on the south coast of WA. The first piece of real excitment was experiencing the Cylone Alby event. This started my interest in cyclones. After 30+ yrs I then shifted to Halls Creek in the Kimberleys. Over the next 12 yrs, during the wet season I had to watch heat driven thunderstorms develop on almost a daily basis. About two years ago I shifted here to find out what green grass [ and not spinifex] looked like and found out that thunderstorms here occur for what seems like almost any reason. My interests are anythig to do with cyclones [ I have yet to see any real ones over this side of the country] and increasingly about thunderstorms and their effects. There was one thunderstorm last season that passed nearby, it sounded like a train roaring along and left a trail of wrecked trees and rubbish all over the place. Also receiving images direct from satellites- I have had [5yrs] an isa card receiver in my computer that takes apt images down from noaa and meteor satellites Last weekend we had some lively storms go over head with a few strikes close handy After the first strike,[ the flash and tghunder almost together] when we had got some visibility back we rushed around and turned the computer off and settled a pair very nervous cats down. We ended up with 39mm rain. This morning another round of storms that woke us up at aound 5am and over the next four hours gave 18mm. There has been 15mm and a few storms around midday. Not to bad - we have had 117mm this month so far. Anyhow that's enough from me for now.... Stuart Montgomery Ellangowan Ph. (The map was painted in blue and green spots with no other colours!) Also, I got around 2,700 (yes two thousand seven hundred!) blue (over 30mins ago). This would've been about 8pm this evening. Also, a while ago someone mentioned that a rain radar was available on Foxtel's weather channel (29). I have checked recently, but have seen no radar. I went up to Mt Coot-tha this evening around 9 o'clock for a bit of a bo-peep, to see if we could see any lightning in the distance. Forget about not seeing lightning, we couldn't even see the city! It was so foggy! We could barely see the streetlights on the roads at the foot of Mt Coot-tha! Quite an eerie and enjoyable experience. Ciao, Marty.
