I've got some pics of lightning that look fairly normal, but I remember at the time that as the lightning decayed some bits decayed faster than others, giving the "bead" effect. Looked way cool - but not the sort of thing a 1/125 shot from a handheld can capture all that well :) At 09:08 PM 10/30/99 +1000, you wrote: >Hi Mike and everyone, > >Great photo Mike, well done! The wind at 7am EDST now in the west at 21KT with some nice Cu forming in the cold stream. We even have a 40% chance of a thunderstorm!!!! Helen and I went on our first storm chase yesterday, a round trip of 5km, up to the water tower lookout and back. We saw some nice rain bands making their way across the harbour. Now the ice is broken I can see this is the first of many storm chases. As I write this we have had a hail shower, about half pea size, it lasted about a minute. Both my partner and I get pretty strong allergy up here in Blackheath and I haven't really had a problem with such things until I moved here. Symptoms are basically headache/sinus pain type stuff and other townsfolk have told me they get it too, and its seemingly more prevelant here than in other towns. Anyway, maybe it could be the amount of pines we have up here but has the thinner air and dry winds got anything to do with it? Well another weekend comes and once again a trough line comes through with some very nice activity to the N, NW of Sydney. AFter a late night watching the Wallabies get up over the Boks a quick 4 hour sleep saw me wake up to another rainy day in Sydney with boring altostratus filling the air and letting out a constant rain over the city.. A quick check of the radar, sat pic, LI and Cape confirmed that the place to be was up near Moree..... We went no where near it. But we settled witht the Hunter region near Singleton as a base for the action today. Rune (Sorry if I have spelt this wrong), Jimmy, Max and I meet up at St Ives and headed up the F3 freeway shortly after 11am. We broke through the rain near the Hawkebury river and came across low level stratus with some breaks to the north and NW. We headed off the F3 inland at Peats Ridge towards Cessnock and then to Bruxton on the New England Highway. We stopped to check things out and noticed a break in the cloud to the W where some development was occuring in what seemed to be a line system forming. To the NW a dark base could be seen with a nice rain curtain underneath. Listening to the Lightning detector (AM radio) confirmed that there were definatley storms around but just where. 15 more minutes of waiting and a decision was made to head W to Singleton after a call from Michael Bath. The storms were moving in a NE direction so the ones to our NW were of no use a they were right over No mans land in the Barrington Tops region. A look at the base of the clouds to our W indicated that there was something forming out there.West it was , so at approx 1pm we headed out to Singleton. Drove past a developing cell to the S but couldnt go after that one either. A stop at Mcdonalds in Singleton for 15 minutes was all we needed as aswe headed out again it was apparent that the cell we had passed to the S was now showing a clear strong formation with some strong vertical updraughts and nice lowerings underneath. We went to the Apex lookout just out of Singleton and took some great shots of the cell, but too our surprise another cell was forming behind to the W again, but this one looking alot more menacing. We now knew the cell we were going after.... At around 2pm we were heading W along the Highway as we were passing the Northern edge of the cell. We were hoping that the road would go NW but it didnt it was just heading straight for it. We knew we couldnt make it so pulled offf the highway about 20kms west of Singleton. Well what a sight... an extremely dark base to the S SW and W with a strong tinge of green above with some nice seperation. Right on the Northern edge of the storm a strong Microburst was visible with some more cloud lowerings. Best storm I have seen so far thias season. Unforunately it was heading NE towards the Barrington tops also, no way to chase it. Heavy rain and Hail hit first then as we where filming a barrage of CG's struck all around with one particular strike causing some of the deepest and loundest thunder I have heard in some time only a second after the strike. After that it was preety much over with the cell passing over and speeding NE. Boring alto stratus had take over the skies already. 4pm back to Sydney. The clearing line was very evident to the S and SW so we knew that it wasnt going to be long until the southerly hit. As we arrived into Sydney a visible frontal line was forming to the South with some very immpressive vertical growth and lowerings underneath. What made it a better visual experience was the fact that it was clear all round it except for this one straight line. At 6pm observed the line rolling in over the city and the Manly area with some really low lowerings and impressive updraughts. Then moved to the Bushfire brigade area at Terry Hills which has a fantastic clear view from aline from East right through to the W. 7pm ...As the line moved closer it was evident that the fresh southerly wind below was pushing up the extremely moist air in front causing what seemed to be the lowerings. Another 10 minutes and it was right in front but what happened next, well none of us have ever experienced this before. The cloud started to rise up from the land towards the main front line eventually joining it giving it scary look like a waterfall of cloud spilling from the main line right to the ground. Some of the best video and picture footage I have ever taken, and all this not even from a storm. This happened near Belrose, Narrabean and continued North until the front hit us. Once Jimmy gets the pics up I urge you all to have a look. Unbeleivable. The southerly then hit us with some very cool fresh gusts and low stratus behind. Time to go home What a day.......They just keep on getting better every week. Thanks to Matt Smith and Michael Bath who called with updates throughout the day. For the NSW members, Make sure you come to the meeting this Saturday night to see this unbeleivable video footage we have..... With sincere regret, I must decline your invitation to fight. If you could delay your invasion of our northern coastline until, say, 2015, I'm sure we'd be able to give you a terrific scrap. But at the moment I doubt we could even field a team. Our F-111s are grounded again, and, because of their age (ours have the gearshift on the steering column, and those indicators that flip out of the door pillars), spare parts are available only at wrecking yards and swap meets. Also, we just can't seem to get them to run properly on unleaded. The Chinooks in Townsville are grounded, too. Losing the choppers is bad news as our fixed-wing capacity in the north is presently in tatters. Why? A slight kafuffle over my good friend Warren Entsch's concreting business has left our RAAF base at Weipa short of a number of desirable features - like a runway. Our Defence Minister, Mr Moore, sends his apologies, but insists that a war is presently out of the question as we don't have a Defence Secretary. Well we have one, but he's currently trying to wrestle Mr Moore to death in the Federal Court, for wrongful dismissal. It would be a little unfair on Mr Moore to begin a war while nobody in the Defence Department will speak to him. You will probably know that the Chief of Navy isn't getting a new contract either but, even if he was, I could not possibly commit our senior service to any conflict. Our two Collins submarines, Drowning and Waving, have just returned from sea trials off Fiji to assess their design targets of silence and stealth. Every time they went into reverse, normal conversation became impossible across most of Chile and Peru. It is also disheartening that Drowning ran aground, especially as this mishap somehow snapped off her periscope. Not that we have enough submariners to man the boats anyway. Attracting career sailors to our modern professional navy has not been helped by recent revelations on prime time television that recruits are routinely stripped naked, smeared with food scraps and excrement, and flogged on the buttocks. I take no comfort from the flood of applications this publicity drew from Tasmania. The army is still the bulwark of Australia's security, but even there things are difficult. Changes following the Women In Combat report, and same-sex relationship rulings, have, in my opinion compromised our flexibility. For example, both the First Heavy Armoured (Dykes With Pykes) and the Gay Fusiliers (The Queens Light Foot) refuse to fight for a fortnight either side of the Sydney Sleazeball Other soldiers are insisting, these days, on owning the conflict and have begun to enrol in regular workshops to manage their aggression. High Court rulings may also mean, with no offence Dr Alatas, that we cannot engage in a battle against a racially-selected enemy force. Can you recruit a sprinkling of Europeans next time? By all means take as many of ours as you want. It is a good indication of the quality of our Defence Intelligence Organization that I am unable to send this transmission in code. The code books were stolen by an unstable, steroid abuser, Jean-Philippe Wispelaere, shrewdly recruited by the DIO, and entrusted with most of our defence secrets. So now we don't have any. Mr Wispelaere sold them all in Bangkok. If you have any secrets you don't need any more, we would be most grateful for them. I should have the code books back soon. Christies are auctioning them in Havana next week. In the meantime, DIO suggests we do the old a=b, b=c, c=d code. They swear by it. I know our refusal will be a considerable disappointment to you, but can I suggest that you consider invading New Zealand instead? Their only significant defence capability lies with their two Anzac-class frigates, Mulk and Lemb. I have no doubt you'll cream them, and I should know. They were both built in Australia. Great trip had a great time and saw some beautiful country. Only encountered one really good storm ( but i wasnt chasing) that was on the 24th near Dreamworld (Coomera). Storm only lasted about 10 minutes but there was some marble sized hail with it. Later that night a line of storms developed out to sea and gave a spectacular display for some hours. Good to be back home (I think) Dane.
