Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I have added radar/satellite picture/lightning tracker loops to BSCH for
Sundays storms..

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/products/recentevents.htm

All up there were 14 storms that went into max intensity (red) on the
Brisbane local scale radar.. 1 of these storms was red constantly for 1
hour and 40 mins, another storm was red on radar for 1 hour straight..
and two other storms were red on radar for 40 mins straight (one of
these was the storm i chased).. and all the other cells either went red
briefly or had red.. then no red.. then red again etc etc etc..

There were several reports of golf ball hail from these storms as well..

All up it was a very very nice day.. our first big day of the season,
and they get bigger from now on too.. gotta love it..

I noticed that some areas of inland WA had tmps up to 18 degrees below
normal on Sunday - Warburton temps 7 (-9) to 17 (-18). Giles and a few
others very low. Are these records, Blair?

Warburton doesn't have enough data for any records to be meaningful.
Giles's November record low max is 17.8 - this wasn't broken. The
most notable aspect of the current spell is how prolonged the cool
weather has been - Giles has now had 11 consecutive days below 30.
I haven't checked whether that is a record, but suspect it could be.

Most of the Australian inland south of about latitude 20 S is prone
to occasional very large negative temperature anomalies in the summer
half of the year in a cloud/rain situation - most stations in this
region with a reasonable length of record have experienced at least
one day near or below 20 (compared to means typically in the 34-39
range) in each summer month. The most striking example was the
maximum of 15.0 in Boulia on February 24, 1949 (outside of this
event, Boulia's lowest MINIMUM on record for February is 17.2!).
In especially wet months, like January 1974 (when 40 was not reached
anywhere in Queensland), cool conditions can persist for several
weeks, leading to very large negative anomalies, even on the monthly
timescale. That month saw monthly mean maximum anomalies in the -5
to -7 C range over much of western Queensland, north-west NSW and the
southern Northern Territory.

Also very low max temps yesterday at Gelantipy and Combienbar in East Gippsland - both 8 - and 9 at Bombala in NSW. This indicates a pretty cold air mass, as all of these stations are around 600 metres in elevation. Perisher, with -8.5, wasn't that far away from the Australian November record of -9.4. It would be considerably more unusual in Wycheproof. > Cheers, > Kevin from Wycheproof. > > P.S. The very cool spring of 1992 is the obvious benchmark. (Note that, so far, 1999 has been distinguished by its lack of warm and cool days, rather than mean temperatures - in Melbourne September and October had mean maximum temperatures well above average, and even November is running close to average so far). For some reason, there was a unprinted carriage return character on the end of the password that was sent to me on 29/10/1999. This caused an "Unauthorised" http failure. As a result, from last Tuesday, all radar archives were lost:-( Today, I went to look at the archives to see about that "mini tornado" near Gympie and discovered that the radar archive had no files. Then I swore a lot and went hunting to discover that when I printed the November password to the screen in verbose mode, behold, there was a carriage return character on the end. So I deleted this rogue character, put the new password in the scripts and the radar archive restarted. In future, I will now check the password for such errors and check that the cutover happens on queue. I'll also set up some log files as I've done for satpics, poll these for errors and report automatically. That'll be a bit of a challenge to do efficiently. In past months, when I've been prepared, there have been no radar image files lost as a repeat attempt is made following the instant an "Unauthorised" error is found. Success is assumed for the second attempt with the new password. As the number of lost files is excessive, no recovery can be attempted. Satpics and BoM MSL analysis charts are OK. Following up on this, the current record for the longest streak of sub- 30 days ending in November has been broken (previously 10, 29 October- 7 November 1956). The record for the longest streak commencing in October or later is 12 days (9-20 October 1974), which will be equalled today if it doesn't get to 30 (and with it currently sitting on 22 that seems a pretty good bet). Giles' mean max for the first 9 days of November is 24.0, 9.6 below normal. According to the report, witnesses describe the tornado as 'roaring in over a hill for about 1 km'. I wonder whether, since it is a 2 and a dog down, perhaps some ASWA members might be able to head up there and interview the locals (maybe he QLD guys are already doing this) - perhaps getting enough detail to fill out a storm report? Furthermore, since the town is south east of, and quite close to Gympie (and assuming the cell that dropped it was a classic supercell with the meso on the NW flank) I wonder if any observers in the larger town may have gotten pics or video. Im not sure what the topography is like but who knows it might be worth investigating. Anyway Im sure this sole report is the tip of the iceberg since it is apparent that conditions over the weekend up there were ripe for a decent outbreak of supercells. This high CAPE environemnt north of Brisbane must be a storm chasers dream when there is a dynamic wind profile. We were able to talk to an extremely helpful, and friendly farmer who witnessed the tornado. Him and his son watched as "sheets of iron went swirling high up into the air" - I asked for clarification on swirling, and he said it was definiately rotating. He estimated the iron to be reaching about 300 feet into the air, although he wasn't too sure. Everyone who we interviewed commented on how they heard a distinct roar, like a low-flying plane. The farmer also mentioned how it was strange that one minute it was pouring rain, the next it stopped and the wind came up, and soon after there was one final burst of rain. The farmer's son took us down to an area where the tornado had gone through a small area of bush/forest. On the way down, we noticed a piece of iron - about 500m (at least!) from the nearest house! The damage to the forest was not extensive, a mixture of small/medium/large trees all either pushed over, or snapped. One thing that was noticable was the allignment of the damage, everything was facing in slightly different circles, you could actually make out a very approximate circle!!! The shrubs and long grasses were even more noticable, being pushed in different directions again. There was debris all scattered through the field beside the forest, extending for about 200m away, which is where the tornado apparently stopped. The farmer also owned one of the houses that were damaged, and allowed us to walk around "where we please" and investigate the damage. The house had been tarped up, but it had about half of its roof missing. Lots of trees down around the house, branches/plaster was scattered everywhere - and a reasonable amount of corrugated iron too, some of it was wrapped around trees. One thing that was strange, and certainly surprising was that a piece of iron was located about 200m away from the edge of the damage path near the road! One could only speculate that it was thrown there, certainly a dammed long way. There was one HUGE tree that appeared to litterally be ripped out of the ground. It had a massive base, about 3m X 3m, I had to step back a fair way just to git it into a 28mm lens. It left about a 5ft crater in the ground - it didn't have many branches/leaves though - just very thick (the trunk was 2-3 feet thick) and fairly tall. On some of the fencing, we noticed some barb wire had been snapped...it had some branches lying on it, you wouldn't think it'd be strong enough to snap the barb wire though, but they had been clearing trees from the area, and maybe a larger tree had fallen on it. Last, and the 'finale' was a house another 200m behind the other house. >From the front, the house appeared to be in tact, apart from some roof missing on the top. We talked to the owner (who was rather distraught understandably) and he allowed us to have a look around. What a shock we got when we went behind the house - half of it was gone!!!!!!! Not damaged, just gone! All except one wall was gone (we never found the walls, or the roof of this house, so I'd say it would have effectively disintegrated.) It was a weatherboard home, but it was by no means weak, or look weak. Interesting how the tornado damaged some things, and leaved other things virtually untouched. The playhouse was fine, except for a large piece of metal wrapped around it, and a big dent on the side. The other thing I took note of, was how one window (in the section of the house that was virtually unscathed) had been blown out, with a curtain still stuck the broken edges of the glass. Other interesting notes, were how there was corrugated iron wrapped around trees before the first of the houses!! An educated guess and further speculation would assume that as the tornado moved through, it carried debris back behind the house, wrapping it around trees. Again, lots of plaster/iron around, and some rubbish too, apparently the sofa had been blown out into the field, but they had brought it back inside. Further reports I received from interviewees, was that a funnel was actually sighted on the outskirts of the city of Gympie. Cedar Pocket is about 10km or so (as the crow flies) from Gympie. The damage appeared to be about 1km in length, although it may have gone for longer, it tracked (or begun rather) in an area inaccessible (well, we didn't feel like hiking up anymore hills!) The width was about 100m wide at the widest section. I personally believe this tornado was at least an F1, certainly a high F1. The damage done to the worse hit house was F3 - but given the damage was done to a weatherboard house, it could be debated on whether this would have had the same effect on a brick house. Hopefully some photos will be available for people to see in the next 24-48hrs.
