Then there's "The Great Flood" of biblical proportions with Noah's ark said to be found some considerable way up Mt Ararat... P.S. This is not intended to be offensive or to start a debate. It is designed to point out that even with today's technology, we can still get the positions of ships and aircraft disasterously wrong as Air New Zealand aircrew found out far too late when trying to negotiate around Mt Erebus in Antartica:-( Is it not surprising that biblical accounts could also suffer from an excess of "jounalistic license" and "navigation errors"? I have seen a report of 222mm in 24 hours from Perpignan (on the Mediterranean coast near the Spanish border). There were media reports (posted on uk.sci.weather) of falls of 400+mm in 12 hours, but I don't know how much credence to place in them. The Meteo-France site, not surprisingly, isn't a lot of help. It certainly isn't the first time that the Mediterranean coast has got a great deal of rain in this time of year - there were falls of 800mm in a few days in southern Spain in November 1989. Still an impressive effort, though. If so, given that I archive all capital cities with narrow-scale and grafton, what additional sites are a priority due to their access by storm-followers and severe-wx potential? What made me think about this idea was two factors; 1) Most (95%) radar archive requests are for the small-scale. 2) Paul Graham's post today about the Williamtown radar "spiral echo" was only covered in the archives by the Sydney broad-scale radar and thus, could not be easily seen. Here it is for all to see - posted from uk.sci.weather..... ** Torrential rain in SW France has led to serious flooding - with 18 people reported dead and 7 missing. The dpartements of Hrault, Tarn, Pyrnes-Orientales and especially Aude are the worst affected. Aude Floodwater up to 2 metres deep swept into Lzignan-Corbires in the early hours of the morning after a river burst its banks. French TV News on Saturday evening showed firemen chest-deep in fast-flowing water rescuing people from their homes. In Lzignan some 25% of the population - 2000 people - have been affected. The area is said to have had around 400 mm rain in 12 hr overnight - some places may have had up to 500 mm. The village of Villedaigne between Lzignan and Narbonne also suffered damage. All roads north from Narbonne are blocked by floodwater. 4 people were found drowned at Davejean - SW of Lzignan - after their car had been carried away by floodwater. Another car containing a woman and her 2 children was also swept away. The children were able to escape, but the car and the mother have not been found. Another person drowned after falling into the water at Villeneuve-Minervois - NE of Carcassonne. Tarn A mother and her 3 children died during Friday night at Labastide-Rouairoux - east of Mazamet - when their house was overwhelmed by a mudslide. In Mazamet a fireman saw a car and its occupant fall into the River Thor. He himself spent 3 hours holding on to a telegraph pole at La Richarde near Mazamet before being rescued. Thousands of people have had telephones and/or electricity cut off. In some places the drinking water supply has failed. Pyrnes-Orientales Perpignan has suffered extensive flooding following 222 mm rain in 24 hr between Friday morning and Saturday morning. A young woman of 22 was killed at Laroque-les-Albres south of Perpignan when she was swept into the sewers after the pavement collapsed under her. 2 people were killed at Estagel NW of Perpignan when a wave of mud and water up to 2m deep swept through the village on Friday evening. 2000 people had to be evacuated at Saint-Laurent-de-La Salanque NE of Perpignan when a dyke threatened to break. In the Lot dpartement further north, 10 cavers are trapped in 2 cave systems. 7 are trapped in a system near Gramat following a sudden rise in the water level and 3 others have not been heard of since entering another cave system on Friday. The dryness of the air has meant that most of the precipitation evaporated giving falls of only 1 or 2mm. The really interesting impact has been the temperature drop of around 7or 8 degrees as the rain started - falling from around 18 or 19 down to 11 - 12 in a matter of minutes. With the strong winds the windchill factor has made it feel a lot colder. Apparently Summer is only 2 weeks away.....?? On another tack I notice most models are promising a decent trough system for late in the week and over the weekend. NGP is pretty spectacular for Saturday with action for most of eastern and SE Aust extending to cover even Adelaide. Hopefully this will be maintained as the week goes on. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com On the subjest of windscreens, I can recommend a product called RainX for car windows....it is great in heavy rain, and it also seems to make it a lot easier to get the bugs off the glass too. However, some people don't like it..probably a personal thing...but I can recommend it!
