Les,

All the pics were taken within a few minutes of each other. There was a
huge line of storms runnning parallel to almost the entire west coast of
WA. Ben Quinn has a copy of the sat pic on his web site, I cant remember
the URL though :-(

The storms were about 100km east of me

Regards

Greg

The rain system has moved off, but the Southern Lakes area is still
suffering the effects of the worst flooding since 1878. Many roads are
still closed, and the Clutha River remains dangerously high. Indeed the
worst of the flooding is only now affecting the lower reaches (property
damage at Balclutha, southwest of Dunedin), though the waters are
stabilising upstream. Parts of downtown Queenstown are still under lake
water, while flooding is also affecting major Southland rivers. Snow still
blanketed the Te Anau area yesterday; depths varying from 10 to 25cm.

By contrast, only about 6mm in Christchurch yesterday. (all in afternoon)
Cloudy, cool (about 8 degrees), and calm in the city this morning. However,
more showers are forecast today and tomorrow, possibly with hail and
thunder, which are also expected through many other parts of NZ.

Hi Greg and all,

Not sure either exactly where Ben has put the WA satpics, but I have
some sat pics & radar saved on my HD. I've finally been able to start
extracting files from my caching 'system' for my archive.

Go here: http://bsch.simplenet.com/anthony/WA/
gmsc(a, b, c, d) are the sat pics, and PerthLoop is a combination of
loops I've joined together of the storms.

As John W. mentioned before, the road system is very poor. But it
improves somewhat when you travel east into the Maranoa and Darling
Downs district. In fact, the Darling Downs has a very good road
network, and is quite flat. I think this deterioates as you head into
the Maranoa region, and further as you go into the channel country. The
roads around Longreach etc are also quite poor, most of them would be
4WD country (especially in the rain!) But, you might (if you're lucky,
and very polite), be able to get permission to drive on a farmer's
property, but I've never tried this before.

The Darling Downs also receive more than their fair share of
thunderstorms, but radar is almost non-existant in this area. None the
less, some towns have been hit very hard in this area.

I would like to echo Paul Graham's thoughts though; have you ever
considered to coming to Australia for a chase? NE NSW/SE QLD also
receives many severe thunderstorms, and have been quite spectacular.

I have some historical data on the region, a map of severe thunderstorms
around Queensland, was compiled about 80 years ago. It includes:
- Number of significant severe thunderstorms in Brisbane (only) from
1852 to 1912.
- Number of significant severe thunderstorms on the Downs, around SE
QLD, central coast and central districts from about 1872-1912 (it says
35-50yrs, but most were taken from about 40yrs) - so given this, you
really should multiply the data by one and a half to compare it with
Brisbane. And remember, that these places were very very small towns
back in the 1800's, a town would have been very unlikely to be hit from
a severe thunderstorm back then, because of their size.
- Number of significant thunderstorms in western QLD, and the tropics in
the past 30 years. Even when you double the tropics data, you can see
it tapers off quite quickly after Rockhampton (and west).

I've scanned the map, you can go here to see it:

I Jane,

There's no real cutoff points for a WER and BWER, but a BWER is
'bounded' - ie, on the diagram I drew, you can see that the WER is
'bounded' by a distinct overhang. Whereas the normal WER on a typical
severe multicell cell, is not bounded, and the overhang is fairly flat,
and does not dip in t the front. Somewhat difficult to explain on here,
if you require further clarification, I'll tell you when I meet up with
you on the chase, much easier to talk face to face :)

Hi Les,

Thanks very much for the informatin regarding BWER's vs supercells &
multicells. If you could perhaps find some papers and scan them onto
the web, I'd *VERY* much appreciate it! We lack many texts here in
Australia, it's very difficult to find books on weather here. Most
bookstores contain 1 or 2 weather books, but are very basic. Sydney is
much more fortunate, for those Sydney Siders looking for weather
textbooks, they should goto Dymocks in the CBD. They have their own
meteorology section there, and when I was in Sydney last year for the
Brisbane/Cantebury Grand Final, I blew all my money on books there!
>From memory, they had at least two uni met textbooks. One was
specifically on Australia and NZ.

I also had a ball in the US in September, with over 50 weather books to
choose from! Unfortunately, they only had one uni-level met textbook
(Thunderstorm Morphology and Dynamics by Kessler), but I was able to get
other in depth books (and accounts) of tornadoes. I was hoping for a
few more, but I would guess that the plains of the US would contain many
more?

People can of course, see a fairly extensive met book collection at:
http://www.chaseday.com/wx-books2.htm
But they're all very expensive, and in $US to make it worse, not to
mention postage for books over here is very costly. Also, I don't have
a credit card - another problem! As it costs more money to convert a
bank cheque into $US.

When I attend next year's ASWA AGM in Sydney, if I get a chance, I'd
like to go into the CBD to purchase a few more.

Hopefully you'll have some success in finding those papers, thanks and
talk to you later,

Hi list,

VERY active afternoon and evening up here yesterday (Thursday).

Rainfall reports from 5mm to 145mm along a stretch of coast between
Carmila and Bowen. Some minor damage reported from Mackay and Pioneer
Valley - reports of two houses unroofed. Some hail reported, and trees
down. Power out in Proserpine for some hours early in the night plus
some minor local urban flooding. Crop damage (cotton/grapes) from hail
(size unknown) around Emerald further west, and hail at Blackwater. No
doubt (from radar) some fair storms across the Central highlands and
coalfields. One I saw on Mackay radar 0610 UTC about 150 km SW of Mackay
looked pretty savage by our standards.

Southern end of contributing trough system currently (0900 EST) about
the Whitsundays and moving north, so most of the action this evening
should be north of Proserpine. E/SE winds becoming established in place
of N/NE yesterday - back to coastal showers.

Regards,
Bill,
Proserpine, Q.

Actually, the rain criterion is based on a given return period (10
years, I think) - so the rainfall rate required for severe status
would vary considerably by location. (It's hard to imagine too many
thunderstorms in Darwin which wouldn't achieve 25-50mm/hour at their
peak!).

I would love to. For a variety of reasons I would very much like to come
to Australia but do not have the $ nor the time now. Perhaps in the
future.

Thank you for your kind invitation. I hope to see you all in OK if not
before. (BTW, in OK they have "section line" roads which are each a mile

I do not have a web site as yet but do need one. I may be able to get some
papers on the web soon, however. We will see. You are quite welcome, btw.
I do appreciate your difficulty in getting good resources. Perhaps, if
the ASWA collects dues, copies of the AMS Sever Local Storms and
Conference's on Radar preprints could be ordered. They are really rather
economical.

They were, according to the NZ media, the worst (as defined by lake and
river levels) since the great floods of September 1878. BTW, the 1878
floods were caused by the melting of snows which had accumulated (in huge
quantities) in the mountains during the winter of that year. (believed to
be during a major El Nino event)

Jane:

The slopping echo overhang is, as I pointed out in the storm photo, preci=
p
that is descending from the anvil. It slopes because it is initially
contained in the anvil at higher levels and will sometimes extend up-shea=
r
all the way to the anvil edge furthest from the storm. As it falls, it i=
s
advected toward the the cumulonimbus tower (by the storm relative winds)
that has created the anvil. The lower reaches of the falling precip
create, as detected by the radar, the base of the echo overhang. It slop=
es
because the precip falls further and further as it approaches the storm C=
B
and it finally reaches the surface as the low-level echo and precip regio=
n.
The region beneath the echo overhang is the WER. In some storms, the
updraft core within that CB tower is so intense that precip is not allowe=
d
to grow from the cloud droplets before they reach high levels. Moreover,=

once those cloud droplets do reach precip sizes, and do grow aloft they
are not allowed to fall back into the updraft. This creates a high
reflectivity core of precip held well aloft above the visual CB tower. S=
o,
what has happened, is that the descending precip from the anvil within th=
e
overhang continues to fall outside and around the CB tower. But remember=

the core of intense updraft within the tower keeps appreciable precip out=

of it. Thus, it appears that the base of the overhang is lifted far abov=
e
the surrounding base within that CB tower and thus, forms a cone or
cylinder-like region of weak reflectivities within the CB tower but
surrounded by higher reflectivities in the overhang. That conically shap=
ed
region or cylinder shaped region is the Bounded Weak Echo Region. If the=

radar is scanned quasi horizontally across that region, what is seen is
similar to a donut of high reflectivities surrounding the donut hole. Th=
at
donut hole is the BWER. Above the BWER is the canopy of high
reflectivities, an echo core, which is, in reality, abundant supercooled
water, growing hail, grapul, and snow in the summit of the updraft itself=
. =

Where does that concentration of precip go? It is forced outward in the
anvil by the intense divergence that caries that precip outward, some int=
o
the upwind direction where it then falls out of the anvil forming the
overhang already described. I produced a series of figures to illustrate=

this. For the northern hemisphere and with some written text (that needs=

revision) they are shown here: =

. =

Keep in mind these are figures which are modified versions of my own but =

produced by others from my publications. Another site where more
explanatory info can be found is: =

 and =

continued here:
. =

South Africa translated those for the southern hemisphere. Thy are
attached. They include both the PPI type radar scans with the low-level=

echo, mid -level echo and echo top all overlaid. The other version is fo=
r
the RHI or vertical cross sections.

I will send you the copies of figures from my tech memo and the captions
later.

Now you may ask away. I am sure you are now very confused!!! [S].

Was snowmelt a significant contributor to this event?

Yes, the surf in the waterspout pic foreground was sort of lame, 3ft of
onshore mush.

I'm not sure, but there has been no reference to it in the media as a
cause. There was a severe snowstorm in the Southern Lakes area in early
July, resulting in a thicker than normal snow cover in the mountains for
the remainder of winter, but that area has experienced a much warmer than
usual early spring, so a good deal of the snow should have melted.

Hi Everyone

I just called Greg Browning, the VIC boys are at Dubbo, not bad for a days
driving! There planning on heading to Cunnumulla? (spelling) which is
between Bourke and Charleville tomorrow.

Myself and James Harris will probably head out to Dubbo, leaving saturday
evening, getting there late saturday night. (see what the models are doing
first)

And Jimmy/Matt Piper are headed to Walgett or there abouts tomorrow.

Thats the update for now

Hi Paul and Everyone,
Just in passing but couldnt resist it when I saw Borroloola and Centre Island
mentioned. Was fortunate enough to be camping on Centre Island (sleeping bag
and mozzie net only) a few years back around 2-3 days after a fairly nice
late season cyclone had gone through. The trip out to the island from
Borroloola was interesting to say the least. Anyway whilst wandering through
the heavy mangrove swamp along the shoreline of the island (croc infested)
and a glance at the sky - and there was this wonderful massive superb
towering monster heading straight at me. Managed to make it back to a rock
cave on the shoreline and watched as this massive storm pelted huge warm
raindrops. Got some nice photos of the cloud mass and some nice rain shots
from the entrance of the cave out into the squall.
Sorry for the trip down memory lane but I love that part of the country.

Susan

PS: The sleeping bag was soaked and the sand was quite wet - not a very
comfortable night - especially when we woke to find a bloody great croc slide
right next to us
