Hi all,
Well i finally put up my pics of the chase Mike and i did on
November the 2nd. Check em out at
http://www.upnaway.com/~jra/weather.html

Click on the mammatus pic of the month or go to it through the chase
reports. Ive put all the pics from the chase as thumbnails at the bottom of
the report so you can see them all. Its a better format than my old one i
think and easier to use. I will endevour to change all my chase reports
over like this as i have some good supercell pics i havent even scanned
yet, been slack i know. Anyway hope you enjoy the pics, the mammatus was
great!

				Ira Fehlberg

PS thanks go to the guys from BSCH for saving the navy sat pics for me.

Another 10.5mm at my place over night bringing the total from this event to
30.5mm.

Our 8.00am temp of 15 has already exceeded yesterday's max - do I feel a
heatwave coming on.....? (only kidding - BOM suggest a max of 23 with the
chance of a storm - hope the last bit comes off).

Speaking of the BOM, its good to see the forecasters working the nightshift
have storms on their mind. This is from this morning's NSW notes issued by
NSW RO at 3.30am:

Thursday 25/11/99 9am

On Thursday high pressure in the thunderstorm should
continue to bring fine weather most of New South Wales, with only isolated
showers on the north coast.

Three things...

1) Archive reports last gmsc/d image (partly intact) was
labled at 199911210424 UTC. Last gmsc/d totally intact
image was labled at 199911210131. This means no update
of gmsc/d evident in the last 18-19 hrs. Can anyone else
please confirm this or otherwise comment?

2) jtwc gms5 archive is intact. Last was 199911212224 UTC.
Other images at NPMOC are intact also. It seems that only
gmsc/d/full from main GMS5 series is affected.

3) If BSCH is getting intact navy satpics for GMS5 gmsc/d
sector, please let me know the URL. The ones used by the
archive are;

http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/satimages/gmsc.jpg
http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/satimages/gmsd.jpg
http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/products/jtwc/archive/g5iwp/*.jpg

Note#1: jtwc archive of last 2 days only to avoid mass
download of old images after those have been compressed
ready for condensed and consequent tape archive.

Note#2: gmsc/d gaps can be filled by jtwc to a degree
when requesting cropped extracts from the archive. Image
resolution is adequate for printing & publishing major
storm events.

It's now Monday morning, and Melbourne just about missed the lot. 2.6mm
was the relatively inconsequential amount, on a weekend when virtually
all of Victoria other than the coast from Melbourne eastwards got at
least 10mm, and widely 30 or more.

Given everything else that has failed to happen in Melbourne in
recent times, this shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

An interesting stat on the lack of interest in spring in Melbourne
this year, with 9 days to go:

Lowest values for highest maximum temperature of spring:

28.0	1999 (so far)
28.6 1879, 1973
28.9 1856
29.1 1917

Highest values for lowest maximum temperature of spring

14.0	1938, 1981, 1999 (so far)
13.9	1921

The 28.0 figure is likely to be challenged on Thursday (forecast 28).
We're not yet in record-breaking territory for latest first day over
30 - there are 10 instances (most recently 1992) of the first day
over 30 being in December.

Haven't been able to get GMSC/D since yesterday afternoon.. and it was
down from probably 11:30pm Saturday night till early Sunday morning..
but i have been using this URL:

http://207.133.112.37/gms5/austir.jpg

It isn't a bad sat pic.. maybe this could be used as a 'backup' for when
the navy sats go down?

Dew Pt's in the high-teens along the NW slopes, upper level jet axis
through Hunter, temps to the high 20's/low 30's, trough expected from
Coonabarabran to Sydney by around 10pm tonight. Looks like the best place
for chasing is anywhere from the S tablelands up to the mid N coast -
possibly even Sydney. - P G.

Brisbane's mean maximum for November so far is sitting on 24.7. This
is well below the previous record for the airport (25.4 in 50 years
of record), but the old regional office site has had 24.8 in 1933.
(The regional office site was also a little warmer than the airport,
so this 24.8 probably equates to something around 24.6 at the airport).

Adelaide (currently 21.0) is unlikely to threaten its record of 20.2
in 1916, but might get its second lowest mean maximum for November
(currently 21.2 in 1971). Canberra (19.4) is currently equal with
its record (in 1943 and 1992), but probably won't break it given the
forecast for the coming week.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

heard from Anthony, James and Rosco about 45 mins or so ago - they are
on the eastern Darling downs with storms to their S, SE, NE and distant
west.. as i was talking to Anthony he described the updrafts as "quite
awesome" and they were pulling over to get pictures..

Also heard from Matt Smith and James Harris - they are at Goondiwindi
and are photographing quite a nice storm (moving over goondiwindi as we
speak) with a nice dark rain curtain, and a rainfoot (possibly
microburst) in the storm a short time ago..

Here in Brisbane i can see a storm approaching from the SW (south of
Gatton at the moment) which has just gone red on radar.. it is quite
nice with very hard updrafts on the northern side and generally looking
fairly healthy at this stage - it could make it to Brisbane or at least
western suburbs of Brisbane..

Latest radar shows the storm is quite strong now - red on radar for 20
mins and an interesting shape to the red..

Howdy all.

Monsoonal type depression has brought very heavy rain to some parts.

Pirlangimpi received 64mm between 9 - 3pm
I received 10mm in a 5 min downpour!
Lots of yellows/pinks from small cells screaming in and dumping their
loads.

Other noticeable falls til 9am were:

Jabiru : 24mm
Wave Hill: 26mm
Borroloola: 108mm!!!!
Wollograng 34mm

The BOM here is saying this type of rain will last for 3 days and get
heavier late tonight / tomorrow.

Hopefully some great falls to report soon.

Paul at Darwin.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I must say that this year that both the BOM and some radio stations (i
listen to MMM) have been EXCELLENT as far as storm warnings go! This
time last year a warning probably wouldn't have been issued for a storm
like this.. and if one was issued radio stations didn't play it unless
the sky was looking threatening to the west or ppl rang in without
reports of hail etc etc.. but this year the radio stations (MMM at
least) are flogging the warnings like there is no tomorrow!! And the BOM
seem to be issuing warnings more often.. Maybe Anthony has been writing
a few letters? Whatever has happened I LIKE IT!

The warning that was just issued is pasted below, this storm has been
going for over 1 1/2 hours and it was red for 40 mins straight between
about 5-5:40pm .. visually it was looking veeeeeeery nice.. but right
now (6:10pm) it appears to have weakened slightly..

TOP PRIORITY
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
Issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane
at 5:53pm EST on Monday the 22nd of November 1999

For the Southeast Coast

A severe thunderstorm with damaging wind squalls and large hail was
observed
approaching Ipswich from the west at 5.50pm.

The storm is expected to pass across the Ipswich area within the next
hour.

People are advised to secure outside items, move cars under cover and
seek
shelter.

The next warning will be issued at 6.30pm.

A very excited Matthew Piper just called with a large cell just to their

earlier, but the one now has been very green with a nice guster and strong
winds, and its about to hit Dalby. Check the Brisbane broad and local radar
to see it move through. They have called the BoM to issue a warning for
that area.

I suspect that it appeared to weaken only because it passed right over the
radar sight so the echoes will have dropped off as the beram does not
point straight up..

The cell just to the south is quite electrically active (around 1 stroke/sec), has a
backsheared anvil, very heavy precipitation core and is backbuilding nicely to the NW.

Should be an interesting couple of hours ahead.

Not a day that I thought would have been all that productive this far south with the dreaded NW blowing strongly for most of the day (has died off now - perhaps to become inflow?) and DP's around 6 or 7 (currently 7). I guess it goes to reinforce that unbreakable rule of weather - that there are no unbreakable rules of weather.

Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey Paul, Everyone.. This storm was a beast!!! As soon as i sent the warning to the list i walked outside (still a fair bit of light around) to be greeted by lightning every second! Even more frequent for short periods! Most of the lightning was in cloud lighting (only 19 whites on the tracker when the lightning was at its peak), but boy were the anvil crawlers spectacular!!!! And get this.. at approx. 6:30pm i saw lightning run from one end of the storm to the other (right up the top of the anvil) and then strike (In a forked fashion) waaaaaaaaaay outside of the SE end of the storm!!! AND I WAS LOVING EVERY PRECIOUS SECOND OF IT!!!!!! I watched the storm visually from when its development and until it dissipated..and given that it lasted for well over 2 hours, maintained high intensities on radar for long periods (and moved NE when from memory steering winds are more NW or WNW) and visually appeared veeeeeery nice (rock hard updrafts on the northern side of the storm - and updraft after updraft after updraft going up) i agree with Paul that it could have been/probably was a supercell.. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey, me again.. I've just learnt that cricket ball sized hail has been reported to the BOM from south of Gatton (SW of Brisbane) from this storm.. Normally i try to delay radar for at least 24 hours, but given the situation i think an exception can be made.. Check out the radar for this storm: www.bsch.simplenet.com/ben/bring-it-on/eventloop.gif I've just looked at Brisbane radar and nearly fallen off my chair!! Quite a nice line of storms heading our way! over 100 whites on the tracker as well..
