Hi John, Anthony and all,

Yes, it was a completely gorgeous formation lit spectacularly by a setting sun.
I was on the train from Bowen Hills when the sunset grew more spectacular. I had
my camera with me, so I jumped off at the next stop (Albion) and started
snapping from the car-park there, but just missed the peak of the sunset.

I got home to Toombul, grabbed my partner and raced up to the roof of Toombul
shopping centre and was treated to lots of CCs but some excellent CGs, which I
caught on film, but can't be developed till tomorrow. Whilst on the roof we
seemed to cop quite a beating at one stage with heavy rain and strong winds as
the cell passed right over the top of us with CCs above us. Luckily we were
under-cover. The best CG lightning occured after the cell passed over us to the
north, and we saw some beauties.

Hopefully I'll have some half-decent pics to post, but what a gorgeous evening
it has been!

Cheers,

Marty.

Good essay Ira, brings back memories of chasing in the 1970's and 1980's
with no computer models. I use to chase on the sight of interesting cloud
back then. One of the most memorable in a winter thunderstorm that I chased
out near Crookwell that gave light snow, the rare thunder and snow
combination. As far as thunderstorms go it hardly ranks against a summer
storm but it did have thunder.

Hi all,

We ended up being quite close to Brisbane yesterday, so everyone bunked
down at my place. Was quite difficult to sleep with constant Thunder
though (ie, the name of my dog).

So far, the chase has been FANTASTIC, everyone has been getting along
great, and it has been great getting together. We had a great storm
(supercell), on Monday...to put it into perspective, some quotes:

"...why should we travel 20,000km to the states, when we can travel
2,000km and see this in Queensland..."

"...this would rate a 14/10 on a Melbourne storm..."

"...this was the best storm I have ever been in, in my life!"

"...there's giant hail in that one!" (you know who this would have come
from)

Both Ross, James/myself and the others converged on the same cell...with
chaser convergence in Dalby. We tracked north to try and get ahead of
it - but at this stage it was starting to weaken, and go into a squall
line - there was an AWESOME gust front on it (only lit up by the
frequent lightning), and a very pronounced wall-cloud like lowering on
the northern flank that persisted for over an hour. It did become rain
wrapped at times, and took on a V-shape/Cone-shape - in fact, sometimes
over the trees - it appeared so low, it looked like a wedge! There's
some great footage of it (those who don't like explicit language better
not watch it though ). Unfortunately, we couldn't follow this much
further north than Dalby, due to a) a poor road network (no roads going
NE), and b) we got slammed in, and deemed it too dangerous to continue
when we had to swerve to avoid branches falling on the road etc

Earlier on during the day, a dust vorticy was spotted underneath
northern flank, under the hook echo region! The vorticy lasted several
minutes, and reached from the ground to the sky. The cell also
contained microbursts, and was pushing dust well ahead of the storm.

The Vic's/NSW'ers have had 4 storm days in a row so far, seeing 2,
possibly 4 supercells all up. Unfortunately, us QLD'ers only have had 2
storm days (joining the chase a bit later then the others). We're going
to try our luck with 5 storm days in a row, we'll be heading out to the
Downs today where there's the risk of thunderstorms out there. After
this, we'll be tackling on this rain band, to try and get some isolated
thunderstorms that form around the rain band. Possibly, what could
happen, is that the rain band will move ahead of the trough, so we'll be
able to get some cells behind that. LI's are -6 to -8 for a couple of
days, with -6 LI's for another 2-3 days after that out there.
Unfortunately, the further out west you go, the worse the road network
gets.

We really appreciate everyone's support in supplying information to us -
it is EXTREMELY HELPFUL, and we wouldn't have been able to achieve what
we have achieved.

Anyway - I just thought I'd give everyone an update on what's happening!

A very happy, and excited Anthony Cornelius, writing on behalf of, Jimmy
Deguara, Andrew McDonald, Matthew Piper, James Chambers, Ross Portas,
Paul Yole, Dane Newmann, Greg Browning. (We'll be even happier if we
can get to the -8's! Providing the wind shear improves)

Hey Marty, John, Anthony, everyone..

It sure was a great little cell! Those pictures that Anthony took are
pretty much what i saw, and i was in a great position to photograph it
all.. with a great sunset, and near calm conditions.. with plenty of
pictures of a backlit Cb, a great sunset and a glassy moreton bay all in
the same picture - should come out really well..

This cell eventually made its way up to Redcliffe later on in the
evening.. the cell actually had a ragged shelf cloud! and i had 40 knot+
winds at one stage, with constant 30 knot winds for more than 10 mins
and VERY heavy rain - the storm was red on radar when it was over me.. I
sat on the southern side of Redcliffe for 2 hours watching this cell
approach - with some nice in cloud lightning and occasionally a Cg.. but
by the time it reached me there was little or no lightning to be seen..

Hey Paul, everyone..

The storm was looking quite good on radar at one stage.. but i'm fairly
confident that it wasn't a supercell (although at the time i thought
there was a strong chance that it was) after going over the radar.. but
it looked great visually from here, with nice boiling updrafts and just
a strong look to it.. at the time i didn't have a camera to use, so
hopefully others in Brisbane have pictures of it..

There were quite a few hail reports from the storm, but so far no-one
has reported any large hail to the BOM..

Around 5:30pm though i saw a MOFO updraft, which was not unlike this one
that Anthony photographed only a few weeks ago..

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/anthony/990711c.htm

On radar it looked quite ordinary, although there was a very small area
of red..

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/ben/bring-it-on/localstill.gif

It was the cell NE of Beaudesert and SSE of Brisbane (BN)..

Ira,

I remember that moment you mention and saying that!!!

Your essay of thoughts gets me looking at our wonderful metropolitan forecast
and the 7 "Fine's" in it and savouring the chases I have been on years ago. When
I was 100's of km from home by myself and thinking that there is no-one in this
world I know of that could possibly understand what I am feeling.

It is wonderful to know that it is a shared enthusiasm, whatever the reasons,
and the ultimate storm might always be on your next chase.

Thanks for putting it in words so eloquently.

Fascinating stuff Blair. WE've had plenty of days (maximums)in the low
teens here in Blackheath and some even struggling to leave single
figures with some chilly mornings too.

Howdy all.

Looking at todays satpics / JCU pic there is a huge mass of convective cloud
becoming more organised in the North of the Gulf.

Possibly the 1st Cyclone of the season?

Certainly the JCU pic looks impressive with a hug blob of white , but nothing
issued by BOM yet..

Anyone know the email addy for subscribing to the Wx list for TC warnings?
Please post if you can thanx.

Rgds, Paul.

Back on this storm (22/11)

Ch 7 had a brief report last night showing hail damaged crops in the Lockyer
Valley (South of Gatton). Acres of pumpkins, all with holes in them and
acres of smashed corn. Hail reported as golf ball size.

>snip
Hey Paul, Everyone..

This storm was a beast!!! As soon as i sent the warning to the list i
walked outside (still a fair bit of light around) to be greeted by
lightning every second! Even more frequent for short periods! Most of
the lightning was in cloud lighting (only 19 whites on the tracker when
the lightning was at its peak), but boy were the anvil crawlers
spectacular!!!! And get this.. at approx. 6:30pm i saw lightning run
from one end of the storm to the other (right up the top of the anvil)
and then strike (In a forked fashion) waaaaaaaaaay outside of the SE end
of the storm!!! AND I WAS LOVING EVERY PRECIOUS SECOND OF IT!!!!!!

I watched the storm visually from when its development and until it
dissipated..and given that it lasted for well over 2 hours, maintained
high intensities on radar for long periods (and moved NE when from
memory steering winds are more NW or WNW) and visually appeared
veeeeeery nice (rock hard updrafts on the northern side of the storm -
and updraft after updraft after updraft going up) i agree with Paul that
it could have been/probably was a supercell..

Updating a post I made a couple of weeks ago on cool temperatures
at Giles:

The mean maximum for the first 23 days of November there is 27.7,
6.7 degrees below normal (and as I type this at 1345 their time -
for reasons best known to the Bureau Giles operates on South Australian
time (including daylight saving) despite being in WA and closer to
the NT than it is to SA - it is only 20 there, thanks to cloud from
an upper-level disturbance of which more might be heard once it moves
somewhere that actually has some decent observations for the models
to pick up). This will be a November record by miles (previously
31.2 in 1981), and gets into the territory of the largest negative
anomalies I can remember at any reasonably reliable Australian
stations (-7 was achieved locally in inland regions in the Januarys
of 1941 and 1974).

The run of sub-30 days lasted for either 14 or 15 days from 28 October
(depending on the exact maximum on 12 November - it was 30 rounded).
This is the longest such run to commence at any time after 1 October.

Following on from your email Blair - Giles is actually even counted in the NT
rainfall report - which may mean that it also falls under the NT BOM??

Strange all round .......... Maybe a weather "x" file.

Paul at Darwin.

I've since been doing some eyeballing of the weekly temperature
analyses (a surprisingly accurate way of calculating spatial means :-)
on the Bureau web site.

In each of the last three weeks above-average maximum temperatures
have been confined to a narrow strip along the WA western coast, and
a few isolated pockets elsewhere in the country.

I would estimate the all-Australian maximum temperature anomaly for
the first 23 days of November at -2.6 +/- 0.3 degrees.

To compare, from David Jones' web page (http://www.bom.gov.au/bmrc/
mrlr/daj/), the largest negative anomalies for maximum temperature
in Australia since 1950 are:

-3.02	May 1968
-2.91	May 1960
-2.68	October 1975
-2.64	January 1974
-2.49	April 1983
-2.37	January 1976
-2.36	January 1984
-2.20	February 1974
-2.19	October 1976
-2.08	September 1978
-2.07	July 1957
-2.07	October 1964

The November record is -1.82, set in 1981. Even allowing for some
warming in the next week, as forecast (particularly in southern
Australia), it is highly likely that November 1999 will set a
November record and be the largest negative anomaly in any month
since 1984.

By way of comparison, the largest positive anomalies on record are:

2.68	October 1988
2.49	September 1980
2.43	March 1986
2.40	February 1983
2.34	December 1972
2.28	February 1965
2.23	April 1981
2.08	November 1990
2.05	August 1977
2.04	October 1991
2.00	August 1982

Howdy all.

Looking at the models AVN 72 Hr precip + surface pressure, it seems
possible for a significant cool change on the weekend with the 540 Line
almost parralell to the whole of the country.

Maybe some more records / floods etc - Im sure that Bair will be
watching with interest.

Up here - BOM keeping an eye on small Low in the Northern gulf areas at
the moment - maybe something interesting for Northern Australia.
