With the onset of the cyclone season, some of you may wish to obtain accurate cyclone tracking maps that print well on A4 paper. As there seems to be a lack of these, I decided to make my own, which are available to download free of charge for your own personal use through my website at http://www.ace-net.com.au/~carls/index.htm. These 30 pixel per degree grayscale maps with 0.1 degree plotting points cover the Australian region from 96E to 168E and 0 to 36S in 2 sets - 5 overlapping regional maps and 15 overlapping local maps - giving adequate coverage for all areas. The place names usually used by the BoM in their cyclone warnings are black with other place names grey. The URL of the maps page is http://www.ace-net.com.au/~carls/TCMaps.htm. I welcome feedback on the usability of these maps and suggestions on how to improve on them for future versions - you can email me at carls at ace-net.com.au. As usual MetService long-range forecasts as so brief as to only describe whether it's going to rain or not, while not mentioning the wind and temperatute. Maybe if NZ votes in a Labour Government this Saturday, MetService might return to providing the public with more detailed forecasts. Meanwhile, the models you are looking at are probably more useful. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 006 From: "Michael Thompson" [michaelt at ozemail.com.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aus-wx: Death Ridge Mark II - Chaser dilema Date: Thu, 25 Nov 1999 09:38:52 +1100 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2014.211 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi there, well I was hoping to join the big chase this coming week, but the models are as my young nephew would describe ' pus ' . Every model is predicting a ridge of high pressure firmly establishing along the NSW/QLD coast. Welcome back the SE trades for tropical Queensland. There is a weak jet over most of NSW, in fact by Sunday-Monday it will be like Darwin with barely 10 knots. The weak jet converges and strengthens over Capricorn Queensland aiding the high ridge. Friday appears to be the best bet out of a sorry field, AVN has a small target of CAPE approaching 2000 near Mudgee, NSW in the afternoon, however upper level conditions will see supercells ' off the menu '. Saturday the action is all in SW Queensland and NW NSW, indeed for the chasers this appears the only options for Sunday through to mid week with a persistent trough out that way. Just beware of the roads and the distance between petrol. Carry water too as it may be hot. If the models hang in on their present course the first day of summer will herald in with temperatures that will be very summer like, in fact early next week is looking very much like a heat wave for SE Australia. So what is chaser Thompson doing. I feel very guilty, but I have three weeks of holidays to go. But as I have a newly born I have been granted only 1 week to chase by my gracious wife. The dilemma is do I join the chase for their last week knowing that early next week will be poor at best, unless you like bogging on black soil plains. Or do I simply do a close to base chase on Friday them retreat home and wait for Death Ridge II to break down. Greedy me is going option 2, although I feel guilty for not joining the chase I have to be at the same time a realist. I know that my chasing time over the next 2-3 years will be less free then what it used to be, so I have opted to move only when the jet is favourable and the trough rolls east again, with luck this may be Wednesday - Saturday next week. Anybody wanting updates on chase conditions / radar ring my home number 02 42 971693. I am not logged in all day, but will gladly log on for the chasers. Meanwhile, the models you are looking at are probably more > useful. > The best source of NZ forecasts I've come across is the Christchurch Press's web page (www.press.co.nz), although it's obviously focused on Christchurch - not much North Island info there. For current observations, the Meteorology department at the Victoria University of Wellington (www.geo.vuw.ac.nz) is quite good. MetService is useless except for warnings and freezing levels (via the mountain forecast). Both GASP and the UKMO have sub-528 air reaching the southern South Island on Saturday night. It looks like a fairly standard south- westerly cold outbreak - nothing particularly exceptional about the moisture amounts with it. (There's also nothing particularly exceptional about snow to 300 metres in summer in the South Island, as I found out in January 1997). GASP, meanwhile, is trying to kill off next week's 'heatwave' (a relative term) and developing yet another trough into eastern Australia, with 72-hour rainfalls of around 200 (that's not a typo) millimetres over northern Victoria, but given GASP's well-deserved reputation for developing spurious troughs in its later days I'll believe this when I see it. The Queensland forecasters, at least, have picked up the central Australian upper-air disturbance and are expecting heavy rain in south-western Queensland tomorrow and Saturday. (Chasers take note - even if there is action in that part of the world, west of the Mitchell Highway is not really an area you want to be when it rains heavily, unless you don't mind spending a week or two sitting in the Windorah pub waiting for the roads to dry out and the floods to go down :-( Blair Trewin +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 008 Date: Thu, 25 Nov 1999 10:46:24 +1100 From: Michael Scollay [michael.scollay at telstra.com.au] Organization: Telstra Strategy & Research X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (X11; I; SunOS 5.5.1 sun4m) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Chase photos ! Hey Matt & MichaelB...Does this sort of request mean that I've been struggling to ensure that all IR satpics from NPMOC are archived and you'd rather have these (which are?)? If so, gimme the URL and I'll shove these in the archive instead of the unreliable gmsc/d. (during that outbreak snow fell to about 700 metres in the central North Island!) +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 010 X-Originating-IP: [203.102.212.6] From: "Matt Smith" [ozchase at hotmail.com] To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Chase BBQ Date: Thu, 25 Nov 1999 18:39:00 EST Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Everyone Going by the models today, it looks like the storm chase BBQ which was organised for this saturday, will not be held at Halden Boyds house, as we will most likely be somewhere between Bourke and Charleville, or there abouts. Myself and James Harris will more than likely head to Dubbo tomorrow (we will leave around midday) and then head up to Bourke or something on saturday to get amongst those -6 LI's and 2000 odd CAPE. I have rung Jane ONeill and we may meet up at Dubbo tomorrow, and head up together, Hopefully catching the rest of the group that is currently still up there. At this current time, my computer says its Nov25 1999 10pmish, which is the correct time here. (Please respond personally, not to the list if you continue to have a problem, ...im sure many people will skip over this as it is a waste of time for them to read it, i know i would.)
