Today was a great day for the chasers including myself with some great cells forming over the Upper Hunter and moving north from around 2 - 3 pm today. We hadnt seen storms for nearly 4 days and was starting to feel the old SDS. BUT alas after following the trough from Victoria all the way up to the Hunter it fired. There were a number of cells which formed but the one we had our eye on was a rather suspicious looking cell to the North of Merriwa over the Liverpool and Coolah ranges. I know that we have some fantastic shots of suspicious lowerings and some possible microbursts also from today. BUT it cured my SDS. 1 Now Im back in beautiful sydney with StratoCu covering the whole sky !! I would also like to back up what Anthony had to say before also. I know it was fantastic that after 5 minutes of meeting them all I felt like I knew all of them for years. We all got on so well and even though there wernt storms everyday were still having fun (Gotta love the CB talk ) It was amazing how well we all got on and the respect we had for each other also. Thanks Matt Smith for organising the chase, I appreciate your time and effort you put into it, and Im sure we would all agree that it was a success. Once againo thanks to all those who came. Im sure you all agree that this is only the beginning. I think they actually judged it more on the way it moved, the BoM spokesman was saying "it moves to the left of the other cells" when describing how a supercell moves. When talking to Jeff the day after to report the Dalby supercell + dust vorticy (now believed to be a tornado after close inspection of the footage), he mentioned that "shear was perfect for supercells" - essentially, he said that Brisbane was very fortunate that it was cloudy, or Brisbane would have been in a fair bit of trouble! We saw some large updrafts well to the east, and Jimmy did too, not sure if this was from the associated cell though, all sense of time was lost on the chase - I was giving the guys a hard time when I first met them because they couldn't remember what day it was...yet 2-3 days later, I couldn't remember either!!! Actually - all measurements are 'exact.' Greg Browning and Jane both had a "Kestrel" (we nick named it "Dr Dewpoint), this was a FANTASTIC little tool, it's a hand held anneometer - with temperature, RH, dewpoint, heat index, wind chill, max wind gust. I'm certainly saving up for one. I have heard rumours that ASWA will be selling these at a discounted retail price too, but I'm not sure of anything concrete quite yet, but I highly recommend it, as it was just fantastic! It's great to get measurements around storms too, and watch how the DP changes around drylines too. They are some distance ahead of the trough at the > moment, and i think they are probably in a reasonably good position for > any action with the latest EC run moving the trough east to between > about Sydney and Canberra by 12z tonight.. Some great ACCAS around that day - fizzed out though :-( Don't believe I've ever seen a pre-frontal trough fizzle like that. Then again, I've never seen a southern cold front during summer! I much prefered being the informer! Greg Browning has contacted me periodically today keeping me informed of their progress. This morning looked nice, with a few small towers shooting up. A largish cell formed near them, and they said the anvil looked quite nice. Another Cb shot up to their north, but it quickly died. Soon, a SE-ESE wind came in, and everything fell collapsed. They were originally thinking of calling the day off, when another cell popped up to their north with another overshooting top. It was moving N, with a slight westward propogation. It seemed to strengthen a little on radar into the pink, but unfortunately, it looks like it's collapsed. Probably too reliant on the surface max heating, which wouldn't be too surprising given the somewhat inadequete low level moisture. The other thing is that shear is still remarkably weak (almost non-existant). I think the chasers will have to put up with another couple of days of pulse activity along the trough until the next major system rolls in - which looks like Thursday. EC has it very nice, but it won't be nearly as good as it looks now when the time comes (well, very unlikely anyway unfortunately). But the models are tipping a 120kn jet behind the next front + upper level cold pool, so lets hope the last 4 chasers stick around for this next system before heading back home. -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 007 Date: Sun, 05 Dec 1999 18:13:05 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius [cyclone at flatrate.net.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.6 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: Australian Weather Mailing List [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aus-wx: Sydney Sea Surface Temperature During April Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, While doing a bit of searching around, I found a SST figure for the Sydney around the middle of April of this year. This was ~23C, which I thought was quite warm. Is this figure a reasonable figure and one that could be trusted? Also - in regards to SST's, what is the humidity over the ocean, above the surface? I wouldn't imagine it to be over 90%, but perhaps some one could give me a better indication? The title for the new page is "The official South Australian Severe Weather watch Homepage" This page will be for all South Australian members of the ASWA and contributions to the page would be handy. For example, Photographs of weather from South Australia of themselves or anything really.. Plus any information regarding weather in South Australia would be good also and all images and information on the page are credited to their rightful author. Also chase stories can come later.. Please note http://lightning.virtualave.net is no longer valid and you will receive a Forbidden message if sent there. For those South Australians who get this message twice sorry for the extra copy. The chasers from Victoria will put together reports etc, catch up with those new members we have had in the last fortnight, and catch up with everyone soon - all I can say at the moment after 7,000kms chasing in Victoria, NSW & Queensland - AN ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!! It was great to meet everyone, to swap stories pictures & videos, visit places we'd never been before (and talk about a couple of those places we'll never never go to ever ever again!!!!!!), play cricket in the middle of the Australian bush in between storms & generally just have fun & learn. Currently Michael Thompson, Greg Browning, Gabby & Matt Smith are hiking around northern NSW continuing on northwards with the systems and having success - lots of luck to all. To those of you who participated over the past fortnight, it was just great spending time with you all..............................catch you soon. The database code is being altered to ensure that all units are converted to metric before storage in the database. Data plotting direct from the database has been trialled, but is not included the current code as yet. I'm interested in finding good images of the various cloud types that I can include as examples (without getting into copyright fights, if possible). I'm also interested in photos which demonstrate the 100 current weather categories.
