Here in the southern Illawarra there is still a nice E/NE wind of around 15 knots blowing, humidity a touch over 80%. Should be a good start to the yacht race, no waiting around for the sea breeze. This wind would be fuelling the trough in western NSW quite well. There have been some locally very heavy falls in some suburbs of Sydney although I am not sure about the totals. What I do know is that half a km from here, there was some very heavy rain as I passed through in a narrow band which would have persisted for some time and then some more go through after. We only had 2.2mm at Schofields which indicates the difference in rainfall so close to here. It was great to be travelling and you hit the rain curtain with downpouring rain. Tomorrow, is expected to be different. If my understanding of the models are correct, the LI and the wind profile is not bad to say the least for Sydney and surrounds. I will check the situation again tomorrow morning but at this stage, we are looking in vicinity of -3 to -6 Lifted Index for around Sydney all the way to Melbourne. Hopefully the Sydney guys can get a chase in. Is it best to have them on all wheels or would the two front ones suffice? I'd like to do a real big snow chase through to Shooters Hill (near Oberon) and all around that area next winter, as last year my old car got within 6-7 k's of the area before the snow was too heavy. It'd be interesting to photograph the boundaries of the snowline at that altitude. I have a brand new Hyundia Excel, Auto, front wheel drive, so is it really worth getting chains on this car? My old toyota Corona did really well in the snow actually, without them, to a point anyway. The snow is typically wet, so its not that hard to plow through, just need grip 'tis all. Sounds Crazy, but I wouldn't even mind camping out that way, in a heavy snowfall, in the car. It's not as if its cold by world standards, anyway. I think we are heading NNW towards Bendigo and then further N. CAPE is above 1000 up near the border and LI's are down to about -4 so it could be interesting. I think the further N we get the better (more dry air aloft and less likely to get rained on). It'd be greatly appreciated if we could get info updates from anyone who is available to do so (not just weather either - if they actually get started, a cricket score too - hehehe). I'll have my phone on hte whole time but I cannot guarantee that it will be in range. If not, you can leave a message on my message bank. Phone # ----> 0407 304 623Thanks. If the cloud breaks we will almost certainly get storms but it looks doubtful at this stage. Most Melbourne suburbs received between 2 and 5mm of rain overnight, 33mm fell at Melbourne Airport but most of that fell in a storm yesterday afternoon. Melbourne's rainfall looks like being well below average for the third year in a row. It also looks like being the 4th month in a row of below average rainfall, most Melbourne suburbs have received about half the monthly average rain so far this month. At the moment another band of rain is moving down from the north so it looks like the start of the cricket will be delayed. It looks like there are some breaks of cloud in the north and northwest in particular so Andrew and Chris are doing the right thing by heading there.
