Not having seen what you are talking about, I can not be sure, but I do
suspect what is called "Anomalous Propagation" (AP) of the radar beam.
Owing to sharp gradients in temperatures and humidity such as associated
with a low-level inversion, the radar beam, when it is only slightly
elevated (~ 0.5 degrees or ~1 degree), will "skip" off this inversion. It
will illuminate the ground by skipping off this inversion in a downward
direction to the ground and the backscattered power will return to the
radar along the same channel it followed on the outbound transmission.
Indications of this radar 'artifact' are many "popcorn" echoes. That is
there a many, small but intense echoes, not uncommonly arranged in a line
or area around, but relatively near the radar. These echoes will change
with time but will not normally move at all. These echoes will extend
upward for very short distances. Further elevation of the radar antenna
will usually result in disappearance of these echoes all together.

So, as a first guess, I would suspect AP is what you are seeing. BTW, AP
is more often seen in the night time or early morning hours. Usually
daytime boundary layer mixing of the airmass will mix out the low-level
inversion and the AP will disappear. However, a change in airmass such as
associated with stronger fronts or thunderstorm outflow will also sometimes
cause AP.

Hi members and guests,

Another meeting is to take place on Saturday evening the 15th January 2000.
The meeting will be of the form of a meeting/video night. There are quite a
few videos from the recent End-Of-year-Chase, the Newcastle event, and
Michael Thompson has hinted he has some US hail footage to be shown -
certainly interesting.

Time: as per normal after 5:30pm or later if chase is on - contact Matt
Smith - 0407069693 or Jimmy Dgeuara if chase is on that day 0408020468

Location: please note that for this meeting, the location will be at Matt
Smith's house

7 Sym Ave Burwood NSW

What do I bring along?? Please bring money for the pizza and also a chair
unless you like standing around or laying on the ground. Bring your own drinks.

Take this opportunity to attend if you already haven't in the past. Please
write this on the calendar or diary if you have forgotten in the past. It
is quite likely I will give another reminder.

If you are not attending the usual apologies should be sent to my e-mail
please: jedguara at ihug.com.au

Well, it looks like an excellent day for storms. Not often do you see
storms popping up very early around Sydney. It is 7:30local time (6:30EST)
and to the SW storms have popped up (and are shooting straight through).
They are facing E-SE although I suspect will move E-NE. This is an
indication from experience of very unstable conditions and also that
hailstorms are likely.

Now satpics are indicating a dense blob of cloud on the S coast which is
part of a prefrontal trough. I would anticipate that development will
further N of this band since the trough is oriented northwards so sometime
this afternoon there will be storms around Sydney. But on top of this I
believe isolated storms will develop around and ahead of the trough zone.

Target areas: 1 can stay around Sydney,
                 2 can move SW
3 or move W or NW to get these other isolated storms.

Shear is the real key and moisture although judging from what I am seeing,
moisture doesn't seem to be the problem.

I will study the models and make the deicision.

At this stage, I will be chasing with Matt Smith and Ben Munro (welcome to
chasing Ben!!)

my Mobile number 0408020468
Matt Smith 0407 069 693 we will be in separate cars and Ben Munro
at this stage will be with Matt Smith

I wouldn't mind others chasing different areas today so that we can cover a
large area. Any of the target zones will be ideal although I haven't
checked the shear and moisture situation.

Please if anyone gives updates, don't just concentrate on radar. Sure give
radar updates of where cells are where we are. I am more or so interested
in latest satpic updates to detect where the trough lines are so please
have them handy if you call. Major cells that can develop in a good shear
environment like today will easily be detected on satpics.

I was especially interested in your pages on cloudnados and Fohn Wall clouds. The clouds forming over the tops of mountains due to incoming cold air, and then the downslope winds sound just like what happens very often on Table Mountain in Cape Town. There they call the effect the table loth, because indeed it looks like a table cloth draped over the top of the mountain. It's fascinating to watch as the cloud comes over the top of the mountain and visibly flows down the side, disappating quite suddenly at a certain height. I haven't heard anyone talk of the cloudnados in Cape Town, but maybe they do occur? BTW, I watched exactly the same effect on Bluff Knoll in the WA Stirling Ranges when I was there a few weeks ago. That was brought on by a very strong SE wind blowing into a "heat trough" which extended north from the Stirlings on that particular day. There were thunderstorms building to the NE at the time. Luckily, we had seen the thunderstorms building while on top of one of the peaks, and we managed to get down the moutain before the cloud blanket formed (although a tiger snake across the hiking trail kept us waiting for a while). All storm activity rapidly contracted NE. I hope the lads who were off today ( Jimmy, etc ) saw what was occurring and headed towards the upper Hunter. I really think that these pre frontal NW/W wind changes ( in Southern NSW ) are one area which present forecasts and models never seem to pick up, I can sympathise as it is almost a lottery, but they account for IMHO for most incorrect forecasts during Spring and early Summer. Usually the daytime maximum will go higher than the forecast, and often by a large margin, and as seen today the thunderstorm chance just nose dives as lower level mositure is sweep away. Any thoughts on how these pre frontal NW/W can be predicted. ? The wind at the Stirling Ranges was a strong SE wind, and there was a heat trough and associated thunderstorms building up to the NW (not the NE as I had said). My (ignorant) guess is that the Stirlings on that day were right at the boundary of the cooler air from the SE and the warm, humid air in the NW. I took a couple of photos, although they were more tourist photos than weather ones, but if they turn out okay I'll upload them to the WWW somewhere. Another thing - the Fohn (actually a German word) is very well known just to the north of the Alps as the warm wind that comes from the south and blows over the Alps, causing quite long stretches of grey, dull weather. It seems there are many superstitions in Europe about the winds, although the "superstition" that when the Fohn blows, the number of suicides and people "going crazy" increases seems to have some basis in truth. The rain wasn't too heavy but the lightning was reasonable - enough to keep me watching for a little while. Great cold air CB's all day but especailly this morning and the forecast is for a pretty stormy/windy night though the broad radar for Melb appears to have the rain heading more towards Gippsland than Melbourne :/. Hey All,

Firstly, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Secondly, I'm only back until tomorrow morning.

I've been chasing (on the 26th), then camping/holidaying/drinking, etc down on the Great Ocean Road for the last week or so and I'm heading back down that way tomorrow to catch the low tide at Lorne Point for a decent surf (which was looking good when I left at 3pm this arvo.)

PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY - Be careful if when chasing (or in general) you venture onto dirt roads!!!!!  On the 26th, Chris and I ventured (purely by accident) onto a dirt road and safely got back onto the bitumen about 20 mins later.  Down at Apollo Bay (where I was camping) I thought I'd go for a drive to see some waterfalls last week and lost control on a dirt road and hit an embankment at aout 30km/h.  (well i was kinda rally driving so....)  Thankfully, the heavy rain on the two previous days made this embankment like foam rubber and it absorbed the impact and no damage was done.  Two days later one of my friends took another dirt road to a lookout and he lost control (he was actually driving very sensibly too - the road is terribly made).  He and his passenger ended up in hospital after the car went off the side of a hill and rolled several times.  If it had gone another 3 metres they would've probably still been sitting (no doubt dead) in the car at the bottom of the 7 metre drop which they somehow managed to miss.  Thankfully they are both OK.  I took a drive up this road to check out the car yesterday and I was driving at 20km/h and the car was sliding out a little and it was damn scary.  PLEASE TAKE EXTRA CARE ON THE DIRT ROADS.  I can guarantee you that I have slowed down a bucket load since that accident which could've killed my friends and I hope everyone takes heed and slows down a little without having to have the daylights scared out of you by something like this.

-----------------------------

On a lighter note - I saw the best, and i repeat THE BEST, Accas I have ever seen yesterday down at Apollo Bay in late arvo (just on sunset but unfortunately was camera-less.

We got absolutely hammered last night and this morning down on the coast by strong winds (probably to about 70kmh in gusts) and heavy rain - which was hell in a tent (but fun).  Still very strong gusts with squally showers in Melbourne this evening (gust of about 60km/h as I was beggining this email).  Cold too.

I'll be back on Saturday arvo (but not on here until Sunday).  Have a good week - good storms (more storms) to you all!

Andrew McDonald

I'm David Sercombe (Coffs Harbour, NSW) and I recently joined the Aussie Weather mailing list. I saw something really interesting today. This afternoon, at about 2:00pm I saw some cirrus cloud with the colours of the rainbow in it. At first I thought it was a rainbow and started to look where the rain was coming from. The cirrus had at one end, the start of the visible spectrum and at the other end the finish of it. There was a second `strand' just below it with the same thing. Is this a rare thing or has anyone heard or know about anything like this? I would have thought that due to the early thunderstorm activity around Sydney that there would have been some good storms around here this afternoon. However, the weather up here has been unstable all afternoon and evening and there has already been a weak storm at about 6:30pm which seemed to get stronger as it went further NE. I think that after reading the current STA there will probably be a storm during the night. I asked him what the max size was and he said at the most golf ball size, most smaller. He also said there were very few hail dents in his 4WD.. must be as tough as Jimmys old car:) So yeah, looks like we will get a few photos of the hail, hope they come out good, just thought id let everyone know. Great to hear you joined the list - hopefully you take the next step and join ASWA!!! Just kidding - that is entirely up to you. I know what you are talking about. It is a halo caused by the ice crystals in the cloud (certain level altostratus cloud) refracting the light. You will see a similar thing at night caused by the moon. Like I said, this occurs with a certain level of cloud. I actually now can predict when it will occur.. because of that type of cloud. It mostly occurs with the setting sun or sunrise - I saw it this morning as well to the E. It occasionally can occur during the day as well but may appear a little different. Just out of interest, farmers use that as a sign to suggest bad weather is coming over the next week or so!!! We will see... To see a couple of examples go to: http://www.australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/photography/index.html and click on halos... I think this will improve severe storm potential. Inland NSW and Victoria could become the southern hemisphere's Great Plains. > > But anyway, as the dry air came through, we decided to go to the Camden > pub.
